The mine with W.B Johnson listed, only appears for the year 1914. Nothing before and nothing afterward. This mine is not listed in the book 10,000 Coal Camps for the County of Bell. I did look in Harlan County also. Here is what is listed for Bell County. Pine Mountain Mining Company P.O. Bell Jellico, Ky Exprss office, Four Mile,Ky Shipping Point, Blowers, Ky Transporation L. & N. R. R. Officers; S. L. Bastin; President W. B. Johnson; Vice President, Secretary and General Manager. Fred Winger; Mine Foreman This Mine worked the Dean seam. Thickness, six to eight feet, roof is slate and bottom is fire clay. Shaker screens are employed for preparation and haulage is done by mules. This mine was worked out shortely after inspection April 8, 1914. Old mine inspected April 8, 1914 Notes: New mine inspected October 10, 1914, drainage was noticed and notice was served to remedy same. Report states that the old mine closed, ran out of coal and a new seam was opened. The land could have been leased out, or closed down completely that year. In my books every mine is listed for each County but going years forward, I do not find this mine or W. B. Johnson listed again.. 2. H. L. Johnson is treasure for the Climax Coal Company, Bell County, 1914. Hope this helps Smile it's Contagious :) Elva Nolan Morgan

Surnames: Howard, Blevins, Johnson, Roark, Parsons Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3AB.2ACI/6839 Message Board Post: Elva, I have a coal mine question so I naturally thought of you first. There was a coal mine in Bell Co owned by Rice Whitaker Johnson (1871-1941). In 1910 I know he was a County clerk so he may not have been in business then but the 1920 census says Mine operator - Industry - self. so I take that to mean he owns it. The 1930 says Operator/coal mines and it looks like it says "Owns". I have no idea how long his mine was in business but he died in 1941. I need to find the name and location of the mine. I don't know exactly where R.W. Johnson fits in as far as being related but anytime I find Charlotte Saylor (Phillip Johnson's mother) or Phillip Johnson or Phillip's son (Lee Finley Johnson), there is a Rice Whitaker Johnson not two feet away. The original Rice Whitaker Johnson ( 1820-1895) who was Rice's (1871-1941) grandfather, lived next door to Charlotte in 1840 Harlan. She was living alone and very young. Eighty years later when Finley was killed, the younger Rice Whitaker Johnson was close by. Finley had a baby that he named Rice Whitaker, not too long before he died. So I'm thinking that by studying the two Rice Whitaker Johnsons I can learn more about Charlotte and Phillip and Finley. At one of Phillip's marriages he listed his father as Isaac Johnson. In 1840 Charlotte (Phillip's mother) is listed as Charlotte Johnson so there is a chance that Isaac actually existed and therefore R.W. was her brother-in-law, but those are the only two references I've ever seen to a Johnson husband for her. I am 99% certain that Phillip's father was not a Johnson. Finley is the one I'm most interested in at the moment so I'm studying the young RW Johnson. Which brings me back to the question - How do I go about finding the information on RW's mine?

Edmond Jones & Martha Hensley were first cuzzins. If this is the correct Wm. Jones? I have 6 siblings for him. I have his mother Martha Hensley Jones ancestors back 4 generations.

I have an "annotated" cemetery book that was purchased from the Harlan Heritage Seekers, the genealogical society for Harlan Co., KY. There is a listing that appears to be your Willie JONES. He is located in Section 2, Center (behind Dome), Row 11 that gives this information: JONES, Willie b. 3 Mar 1874; died 22 Jan 1950 - PVT 38 US VOLUNTEER INF (?Spanish-American War?) On the Kentucky Death Index, there is this death record which you could order from several different sources both private and the State of KY: Willie A. JONES lived and died in Harlan Co., KY; Vol. 005, Cert 02434; died "2-22-1950", age 72 years, recorded in 1950. I see that the stone and the age given on the death cert are off by one month. This could be a typo or it could just be that the stone was done incorrectly. I have no way of knowing. Perhaps with his age and by obtaining his death cert, you will be able to learn more about his parentage. Good luck to you. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA
