He passed away in Platte County Mo. in 1833. His place of birth is listed in the family bible as Harlan Ky. As of yet I've been unable to find anything that connects him there. I do know that his first child, Elizabeth H. Adkins is also listed as being born there in 1827, his next child David Green Adkins was born 1831 in Mo. His wife is Martha Henson. I checked your newly updated marriage records but found nothing. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve.

With a little extra time, I added the precinct and district. It sure helps to know where we are looking. I hope to do the 1900 and 1910. Now if we could just get all the names spelled correctly from Benham and Lynch that migrated here during the beginning of the 1920 Coal Mining era. Google runs our Harlan research site translated into French. I haven't checked but it is probably translated into other languages. Thanks :) Elva Nolan Morgan

Surnames: Howard,Jenkins,Dockery Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AB.2ACI/6858.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello. I have the details on microfilm of this triple murder. I will jot down, what I recall from memory and when I get time I will send u what i have March 1926. Hascue Dockery, age 20, went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jenkins of Loyall, looking for his wife. They had been married for only a couple of months and Mrs. Dockery returned back home to her foster parents, not wanting to stay with Mr. Dockery after several alteracations with him. Mr Joe Jenkins was just returning home from work around midnight, Mr Dockery was hiding outside the home and killed Mr Jenkins as he stepped upon his porch. He then shot through a window, killing Mrs Jenkins, who had a small baby in her arms. He shot Mrs Bradley Howard, when he mistakenly took her for his wife. He went into the bedroom and found Mrs Dockery and she promised to met up with him later, not to kill her. He was captured, hours later and was placed in the Harlan jail. Dockery trial was April 3, 1926 and he was found guilty by a jury consisting of J.F. Cawood, John Rice, Chas Pennington, J. G. Montgomery, Bill Vanover, A. N. Hagery, W. C. Anderson, Chad Wynn, James Jones, J. A. Chitwood and C.R. Reynolds. The jury took only seven minutes to decide his fate. The verdict was death and he was taken to Eddysville to be held until he was to be electrocuted on June the 11, 1926. Notes Mrs Jenkins maiden name was Creech.
There are a couple cemeteries in Kitts but as I understand they are over grown with weeds from lack of care. The cemetery is just a stones throw from Harlan on Highway 38 going towards Evarts. The highway has been redone and is now considered very safe. The road was in very bad condition for many years, being two land lanes with all the twists and turns. So many people were killed at dead mans curve located as u entered Kitts, finally after many years and deaths on highway 38 it got a face lift that should have been done years ago. Kitts Cemetery is small cemetery and served the Kitts community since the mid 1900s. Lige Howard Cemetery is also located at Kitts. All the towns between Harlan to Evarts were mining camps will be located right off the Highway. Kitts is very, very small and most if not all is torn down now and where the camp houses once stood is now grown over. Harlan County got it's first cemetery in 1927 Resthaven. Another one was proposed the same year on the Will Cornett property located on the Harlan, Pineville Road. Here is a quote from that article. "Harlan County people needs a chance to place their love ones in an excellent cemetery instead of having to bury them here and there or where ever they can buy a lot." I had to send this through the list because aol returns any mail I send to aolers. ********** I'm not sure really. I haven't been to Ky since I was a little one. My grandpa says it's about 2 miles east of the city of Harlan. The directions I posted are the only thing I know about the location. Do you live in Ky? Do you think maybe some of your people might be buried there? You can go to mapquest.com and type in Kitts, Ky and you can get a general idea of where it is, but I don't know how to get to the cemetery from the map. If you find out, can you pls let me know? I have in my files a letter written in 1928 to my father Floyd FARLEY, from Louisville,KY. Felix asked about Sylvania and Calvin and sent his regards. He said he was going to Cincinnati to spend Christmas. Duncan and Felix must have been from a 3rd marriage. Minerva married Granville Stacy, don't know when or where. There was a son Henry. A while back, I had asked if anyone knew of this cemetery. One person replied saying that they did, or thought they did....I can't remember..I've lost the email. I just got directions to the cemetery from my grandpa, and I'd like to confirm whether anyone knows of this cemetery. Directions: From Harlan, go towards Black Mountain, pass the High School, cross the bridge over the Cumberland River. You'll see a gravel road leading up to the cemetery. So far, the only people I know that are buried here, as per my grandpa, is Wille Osborn, Manerva Howard, Green Shackleford, and Babe ( Thomas) Shackleford. Does anyone know if there are other people buried here? I seem to recall my grandma telling me that there were other people besides her family buried there. At that time, when my grandma told me, I assumed "Kitts cemetery" was more than just a few graves, but now I'm not so sure. Also, my grandma told me that her grandpa, Willie Osborne, used to own lots of property in Kitts, and that he sold it to a man named Whiteford, or something like that, but when he sold it, Willie asked that he be allowed to keep and use the small family plot, which he did. Being that I don't know the 'exact' location of the cemetery, how would I find out who currently owns it, and how many folks are buried there? I want to make sure this cemetery with my people in it are not forever lost and forgotten about. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this. Anne Do you know who killed my father? John B. Does anyone know who JBM Howard was? At any rate, I have some information for those who might know this. In 1917 J.B.M. Howard was Chief of Records (secretary) of Vaudewas Tribe No. 410. His address was PO Box 66, Harlan Information from the Improved order of the Red Men For those of you who are wondering, The improved order of the Red Men is the oldest fraternity in the United States and was supposedly The Sons of Liberty in its early years before the name change. Their beliefs being fashioned after the Iroquois confederacy. I do not have any direct ties to this JBM Howard that I know of but would like to know who JBM was.
