But just having a list of the cemeteries might not be too helpful. A lot of the cemeteries are impossible to find or to get to. Most of them are overgrown with weeds and the tombstones can not be read (if they even have stones). Since William Burton Scott was born ca 1856 and no date as to when he died--it sounds like an impossible task to find his grave site just by visiting some of the cemeteries.. It would be most beneficial to actually know of someone who knew where he was buried.---Janette Nolan

The book I referred to is rather lengthy and I Xeroxed only portions of interest to me. As my Ancestor Edward came to America in1648, I copied no further information on those of the family remaining in England, so can't help you on Joseph. Whereabouts in Berkshire were your Wilder family? Wiltshire is a neigbouring county. The Joseph Wilder I am looking for would have been born somewhere between 1660 to 1698, and he fathered a child in 1712 in Ogbourne St George Wiltshire. The mother was a Sarah Goddard. Do you have any Josephs in your book that could be possibles? Sorry, I know it's a long shot - unfortunately I have no data to give any idea of Joseph's age at the time of the child's birth. The son was named Wilder Goddard. Thanks. Simone.

Based on his book for the early part, I have my Wilders from that time in Berkshire, UK, to my g grandmother Elizabeth J. Wilder, b. 1844 in whitley County, KY.

I have been told by my aunt and cousin that he is buried somewhere in Harlan County. I've been looking for it for several years now. Since I now have a list of the cemeteries in Harlan County I can try to get to as many as I can to see if I can find him. Being I don't live in Ky, my time to look is limited. If anyone should come across his grave I would be so grateful to hear from you. Thank you, CSB

Abraham Locke originally came to Straight Creek from Montgomery Co, VA and was married four times; he had children by all four wives. The area in which he settled was called Locke, and Lockes still live in the area. It is close to Kettle Island and Peach Blossom where John Murphy Ward lived. Thomas Marsee Ward and Mary Ward eventually moved to Fariston, Laurel Co, KY where they died. Thos Marsee Locke's half-brother, Alexander Locke is a son of Abraham Locke and Annie Neal. He married Benjamin Ajax Wilson Rice's ex-wife, Zelphia McFetridge Rice after the death of his wife, Mahala Warren. They had no children.

Susan Ward was born on March 13, 1853, most likely at Peach Blossom on the right fork of Straight Creek where her parents made their home. She and JF Rice married on Nov 9, 1871, according to his Family Parallel bible that is still in our family. They had the following children: 1- Benjamin "Ben" Ajax Rice 2- Robert Groves Rice 3- Rufus Murphy Rice 4- James "Jimmy" Blaine Rice 5- Mary Eliza Rice* my great-grandmother 6- Nancy "Nanny" Rice 7- George Finley Rice 8- Sudie Rice 9- Minerva "Nervie" Evelyn Rice There are records regarding John Murphy Ward at the archives in Frankfort during the time period just after the Civil War. He had taken some men to court for stealing his belongings during the war, and then dropped the suit. Some of the records are in his handwriting with his signature, and it is beautiful. As Edgerly states in her book, the Wards were known for their writing skills, and Murph Ward's is a fine example.
