According to my mom, who has alot of the info in her own memories of what she was told growing up, and of course knowing alot of her Blanton relatives. Jane, (her grandmother) William S. Blanton's Jr.'s wife was a Jones., his father William was married to Nancy Slusher. which I found on a census record. My mom is the only living child of Jesse and Emily Blanton. My grandfather was married to Rachel Farmer on 3/21/1890 I did find their marriage record. Millar Farmer was his brother in law. Your advised to purchase software is absolutely correct! This gets very confusing. Everyone had at least 1/2 a dozen children, everyone continues "family names" etc. Anyway, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the information you have provided. My mother is 85 and as sharp as a 20 year old! however she is loosing her sight. she loves to hear anything I have come across. The very best to you! Eda Komora
Just tossing this in for your notes. In the 1920 Harlan Co., Kentucky Census is #108 #111 Jesse Blanton. Next door #109 #112 is Wilson S. (Sherman) Browning. His wife is Sarah "Sadie" Belle (Blanton) Browning. I have her as the daughter of Jackson Blanton and Jane (Jones). I "thought" perhaps the William age 75yr. in Jesse's household was the father of Jesse and Sarah but another researcher said that they were the children of Jackson and Jane (Jones) with no proof. I am not directly related to you but have many Harlan Co., KY family connections from my Mother's side of my family. All of the information I am providing to you is available from public census records and a little available from other's research . If you are truly just beginning your research, you need to run right out and purchase yourself some sort of genealogy software. I use FamilyTreeMaker (FTM) but there are other good ones. In that way, you can begin with yourself and enter your siblings, their families, your parents, their siblings, your grandparents, their siblings and all of the children from all of these people. You will find it will keep you busy for some time to come. With a genealogy program you can drop it or pick it up whenever and it will be there for you in an organized fashion. And, you can just add a little bit at a time as you locate various items of documentation or as your particular free time permits.. Remember, "there is no truth without proof". Without proof, we have mythology. It can take a lifetime of efforts to obtain all the necessary proof. 1930 Harlan Co., KY Dist. #6 Dwelling 90-96 BLANTON, Jesse, head, 60, mar. at 29, b. I will work as fast as I can to get more of our other mining camps added. For lack of a better description for locations in Harlan County.. To everyone who has sent me things to add, please bear with me as I am running far behind. Sherry, The lack of a "Race" column on the transcribed 1850 Harlan County Census is probably due to the lack of any "free persons of color" in the county at that time. Slaves had no citizenship. However, under the constitutional amendment establishing the census, slaves were to be counted as "three-fifths of a person" counting towards the number of congressmen permitted from each state. About the 1850 Harlan County Slave Schedule and Aley Ledford's six slaves. This is how I think they stacked up complexion-wise: Jack, the black patriarch, born about 1794 - was in the slave family of Sam and Sadie that accompanied Aley and Elizabeth to Harlan County from North Carolina. Sinclair, born about 1830 and George, the mulatto sons of Jack (their mother is not known). According to the book GENERATIONS, by John Egerton, Sinclair and his family are particularly described as ..."fair-skinned, could have passed for white." Another description of Sinclair was that "he was light-skinned and had long curly hair." The third mulatto is identified in the 1870 census. He is George, born about 1848, probably the son of George and Harriet who was born about 1814. Harriet was shown as black in the 1870 census, as was her daughter Patcey, born about 1840. The 1870 census also lists Eliza Ledford, age 22, black in the household of Daniel Garrett. Eliza was probably the nurse/attendant to Elizabeth, age 79, the blind wife of Aley Ledford. Elizabeth is shown in this household. ______________________________Date: Mon, 28 Nov 2005 07:06:05 -0500 From: "Sherry" <sheree606@alltel.net> To: KYHARLAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: 1850 Harlan County Census Can anyone tell me why the Race column has been eliminated on the transcribed 1850 Harlan County, Census? Sherry, I am descended from Sinclair Ledford, born 1830, emancipated by Aley Ledford in 1860. Sinclair and Dorcas had a daughter named America, born in July 1850. In October 1871, America married George W. Creech, son of John Creech (in the 1870 census, John, Sarah and family lived in the next house to Stephen Ledford, son of Aley). America and George's firstborn was Henry R. Creech my grandfather. I am interested in the draft registration card for the African American Ledford. I am one of three African American Ledford descendants with green eyes. I have not heard of one with blue eyes. Moreover, I am aware of only one surviving descendant who has the Ledford surname (Bill in Mississippi). JerryBrown --------------------------------- Yahoo!
