It's possible I've missed him in recording the sheriffs, but the name is rather unique and I don't think I would have overlooked it. It's possible he was a Deputy Sheriff. There have been many, many Deputy Sheriffs (I would hate to guess how many, but perhaps well over 1,000) and to my knowledge there is no list recording all of them. Many Deputy Sheriffs were employed by the mine operators to keep order at the mines during the labor strifes in the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's. It's also possible he could have been a policeman in Harlan or one of the neighborhood towns. Sorry I can't help more. Otto G. Coldiron

This family is listed on the 1850 Harlan County, KY census # 161/161 Dist 1: Washington Hensley 41 b Tn; Ruth 35 b NC; Burton 18; Wilson 16; Mary 13; Washington 9; Henry 7; Eunice 4; James 1. The 1860 Harlan census adds Martha b ca 1850 and Josephus b ca 1854. Information I have is that George Washington and Ruth Edwards Hensley left Yancey Co, NC between 1847 and 1850. I think it highly likely that Ruth Edwards, age 35 in 1850, was the d/o James and Elizabeth Wilson Edwards of Yancey Co., NC who was born 4/14/1815.
