_Coal Miner Stamp Web Site_ (http://www.coalminerstamp.com/) ....Here is the web site for the coal miner postage stamp that I mentioned in a prior email. Apparently the petition is ongoing, (although idle) even though the great people who were spear heading the effort are no longer with us. Perhaps the interest will be renewed after the recent tragedy at the Sago mine and subsequent national interest. Blessings, Brenda
Harlan deaths 1861 OSBORNE, Nancy 10 b. Harlan d. 12-17 bastard child of Nancy Osborne Anyone know which Nancy Osborne had this child?
<<The Nancy Osborne in the 1900 and 1910 census is Nancy Brummett Osborne (wife of Hiram Osborne) mother of Amanda Osborne who married Wiley Saylor. Below is William Osborn and Nancy Cawood Osborn in the 1860 HCC. I would presume the older children are siblings of Nancy and the Joseph Cawood is her father. Avery>>> Well, that solved that question! :) But...I not sure the Carmeliza, Sarah, Green and Margaret are her siblings. Take a look at these census records. Those children don't seem to fit the ages of Nancy's siblings. Now I have to find my Nancy on the later census records. His son came from Virginia and had him buried and would not tell anyone. His son's named was Elmer Hammock but he had it changed to Earl Haynes before he went to Virginia in the 50's. thanks for any help. Dear List, Over the years, I've tried to figure out my Osborne lines They always had me stumped and it seems the more I research them, the more confused I become. If they didn't intertwine, maybe it wouldn't be so confusing....but it is. I have so many unanswered questions!! I'm going to try to break them down, one by one, and ask any Osborne researchers, or any one from the list who may be able to help me figure this all out. My first confusion: My question is....on the 1900 and 1910 census, she says she had 12 children, 8 still alive. On the 1870, she is listed with three of her children from William Osborne. Her last child from William Osborne was William, who was born in 1863. William Osborne ( Sr) died n 1862/63 during the Civil War.( He was the son of Enoch Osborne and Malinda Farmer ) So....that's three children....if she stayed a widow---- ( which census indicates she did) then where are the other 5 children, and who fathered them? One the 1900 census, she is listed as being mother in law to Wiley Saylor, husband of Amanda....Amanda would have been born in 1876.....is this one of Nancy Osborne's children? It looks that way from the census record. Would the children have been taken away from her and sent to live with someone else? I know they did that back then. This are questions from just one of my Osborne lines. In order not to confuse and make this post a book, I'll leave it at this and post separately on the other Osborne questions I have. I'll address Nancy Cawood Osborne's parentage another time. If anyone has the time or the patience or the inclination to help, I would be forever grateful. :) Anne * * ************************************* Enoch Osborn b 1811 md Malinda Farmer b 1817 William Osborne b 1838 d 1863 md Nancy Cawood b abt. 1839 *dau of Mary Shell/Cawood and ? My "brick wall" is trying to determine the parents of Sarah "Sadie" Belle Blanton born 13, January 1878 Harlan Co., Kentucky; died 1, December 1953 Harlan Co., Kentucky; buried ??. Sarah married Wilson Sherman Browning (1868-1933) in 1894 (his second wife) and had twelve children. Her 11th. chilld was Edward "Eddie" Browning (1917-1953) and he died as the result of a gunfight with someone. Does anyone know the details of this fight? Are all three of the above buried in the same cemetery and does anyone know the location? I don't have much to share but will share what I have. Carleene
I am trying to gather information on my grandparents parents and beyond. My paternal grandfather is Ewell Prince, Im looking for information on his family. He married Anne Osborne, they lived at Grays Knob, he was a blacksmith. My maternal grandparents are Shelby Collins and Joey Allen. They lived at Cranks Creek and Crummies. He worked in the mine at Crummies. Both dear grandfathers died of Black Lung. God Bless coal miners and God Bless organized Labor unions. Does anyone know anything a bout the coal miners stamp which was being advocated for by the UMW? I tried contacted the union directly but didn't get a response. Hi, I am looking for more on my Dean family: grandfather John Gilbert DEAN, b. abt. 1876, d. 6 Nov. 1933, son of Franklin Dean (Deen) and Sarah THOMPSON, m. Joanna SKIDMORE. I have the names of Grampa Dean's siblings but not a lot more, other than family stories I heard as a child. Other (better) researchers have done a lot of work on Ball, Cawood, Coldiron and Skidmore. Most of my families had been in Harlan from the earliest days. So we are also connected to Farmer, Fee, Ledford, Noe, and many others. For years I would bet anyone I met who had been born in Harlan, or whose parents had been born there, that we were related. We always were. My oldest sister would say the nicest thing about Mom and Dad bringing us to Ohio to live was, we could marry men we weren't "blood kin" to. Sharon Wilson

Well, goodness, we are all pretty much related. Leander Skidmore was one of my great-grandfathers, and died about 1885. I did not do all the research myself, but picked up an interesting note on a Rootsweb family history. I cannot give you the name of the researcher, since I found this info in my early days of searching, and I did not note their name (apologies to you and to that person). Here is the note on Leander's death: ³Leander was reportedly shot by his son-in-law over a poker game. Thomas Day. Admos. on his estate given on August 4, 1885 in Harlan.² There has been much Skidmore research done by William Skidmore and others, and you would find lots of excellent Harlan information on the Harlan county research site. Hi, My brick wall is Harrison Westmoreland b. Harlan, Harlan Co., KY about 1872, died 19 Feb 1932 in Roane Co., TN. He married Elizabeth Cole in Roane Co., TN. I have no information on her and the census records show her born TN. On 1900 census, 3 children with 2 living in Roane Co., TN spelled Wesmoreland. On 1910 census, 8 children with 5 living in Roane Co. TN. 1920 missing, haven't found the family on any census. On 1930 census again living in Harlan Co., KY. Children were Ava, Sherman, Wesley, Arthur Alford (my grandfather)b. 22 Feb 1898 Rockwood, Roane Co., TN, Earnest b. Sep 1899, Bertha b. c 1902, Elijah (Lige) b. c 1907, and Genna Mae b. c 1909. All the children were born in TN according to the census records. I know Harrison had a brother named Perry and a cousin named Sam that also were in Roane Co., TN with him. The 1910 census says he is a miner in the 'oar' mines. So far this is my only connection to Harlan County and I can't find it anywhere except on his marriage application. Any help finding him greatly appreciated. Sandy

Hello, friends. My great-great grandfather NIMROD DAWSON was born 1778 Cumberland River, VA. He was supposedly a doctor. He died 20 Dec. 1856 in Harlan Co., KY. In a county history book it is mentioned that Nimrod's father's name was WILLIAMS. (Don't know if the "S" is a misprint). I'm seeking information about WILLIAM(S) DAWSON, father of NIMROD DAWSON. Thank you! Phil Dawson
My SALYERS and COLLETs came to KY from VA. Thought some of them might have stopped in Harlan Co. I have one clue to that effect. Anyone have any info on either of these lines? Thanks.
