    2. Howard, Hall, King (Edward Sanders line), Lewis, Nolan, Noe, Brock, Blanton, Farmer, and aligned families. My brick wall is John N. Howard md. Charlotte Lewis. Family lore says he was a doctor (M.D.) about the time of the Civil War. Can't find any documentation, although others have heard the same. His son Samuel (md Sallie King) is usually listed as md to Ellafair Ratliff (with various spelling variations). I very respectfully disagree, due to familially stories etc. The Howards, as a lot of families, were not very orignial in their naming of children. My grandmother (Lottie Jospehine Howard md, Andrew Milburn Hall)was the lone survivor of their (Sam and Sallie) union until her death into her 80s. I have quite a bit of info on the Blantons and am very willing to share what I have. Susan Nolan (my great grandmother) seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth after the death of her husband, Chad Hall. My mother's memory has her connected with a McKnight and a Miniard. Any information about Susan would be most appreciated too, my middle name is Susan, after her. Thank you, Linda Blando

    1. Re: KYHARLAN-D Roll Call/ CREECH/LEDFORD/LEWIS
    2. Jerry Brown
    3. I am primarily interested in information pertaining to the black residents of Harlan with the surnames of CREECH, LEDFORD or LEWIS. Henry R. CREECH, my grandfather died in 1939. He was a blacksmith. My grandmother Eliza Jane LEWIS died in 1973. They lived on Cumberland Avenue, the part that is now outside the floodwall. My great-grandfather was George W. CREECH, the son of John and Sarah CREECH former slaves of Old John Creech in Cranks Creek. Henry's mother was America LEDFORD, daughter of Sinclair and Dorcas LEDFORD, former slaves of Aley LEDFORD. There are numerous reference to this family in the book "Generations" by John Egerton. Eliza Jane Lewis is the daughter of Will LEWIS who died in 1917 on Cranks Creek. While Will LEWIS (the son of Charity LEWIS) was married to Rebecca J. LEDFORD (another daughter of Sinclair and Dorcas LEDFORD), I have determined that Eliza is the daughter of Martha LEDFORD. Martha is the daughter of Mary (Polly) FARLEY and James LEDFORD (son of Aley). The connection I found was Martha's brother John who was a frequent visitor of Eliza. She, and we, always called him Uncle John. Since I know many of the descendants, I am also interested in the other black families of early Harlan and Cranks Creek -- the TURNER's, HOWARD's, WARD's, POPE's and OLINGER's. JerryBrown

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3AB.2ACI/6951.1.1 Message Board Post: Lorene, Alex Foutch ( if we're talking about the same person) was my great grandfather, married to Vesta Aikman/Akemon, He was killed about 1945, shot by his son-in-law from what my Dad had told me, and buried there in KY. He and Vesta had 4 daughteres that I know of, Bonnie (my dads mom), Lonnie, Ruby, and Cindy. Lonnie was also called Lola and was the only one who stayed in that area, the others moved to Ohio. Lonnie (or Lola) married I think? Oscar Deal, I am not sure on the name but I know he was a Deal. She passed away sometime ago but has a son, Bill Deal still living in the Cumberland area. I would be glad to have any information you may have. Thank you for your time. Lisa Morris-Fitch p.s. The only thing I know about my grandfather Melvin Morris is that his parents names were Robert and Dempsy Morris.

    2. Have you seen the book Volume 1--Bell co Ky History --cp 1994? On page 253 it gives a short history on the families of James Harve Cox and George Washington Cox, submitted by Virginia Greer Gambrel. Although I do disagree about some of the dates that she has (according to census records) It will give a few details of the families. James Harve Cox and his wife are in the 1880 Bell Co census. He was listed as Harve Cox.--Janette Nolan Hi, I'm Stacey (Cox) Wells and I'm researching primarily the Cox lines. The only info I have is back to my great-grandfather, Charles Wesley Cox. I don't even know much about him. He was married to Rosa (Hendrickson?) and he was killed in the late 20's in Harlan county, Ky. There was a huge trial held over the murder, and it's rumored that his wife Rosa killed him, but her brother Hershel went to prison over it. I can find no record of his death or this trial. ???? And I have nothing about his parents or anything else about him. That's my main brick wall.

To be honest, I had originally wanted to ask a different question, but when I started looking at the census the other night and found " the wrong Nancy", it brought up other questions. Now I have found the right Nancy and I will post the right question...but that will have to wait because I am hoping to receive some info regarding Nancy's parentage from another researcher. Once I receive that info, I'll post on this Nancy again. 2. Is this the Ted Middleton (1899-1968) who married Hazel Howard in 1924 (53-83) and who was the s/o William B. and Margaret (Maggie Little) Middleton?---Janette Janette, Theodore Middletons parents were James H.and Josephine Middleton. His brothers and sisters were Clarence, Virgie, Bascom, Bryan?, Gladis, Earl, per the 1910 census. I don't have Moms maiden name. If you find the marriage record can u post it on list for James and Josie. In the 1920 census, Theodore, Virgie, Slemp, Bryan?, Gladis and Earl are living with Mom on the farm at Yocum Creek. I think that Slemp was a nickmane for Bascom. Theodore is listed as pool room operator. Thanks Elva

    3. Elva, I didn't know the numbers were that high, but I read somewhere where Sheriff Middleton deputized 67 (maybe one or two more or less) at one time. Theodore Middleton is a relative of mine - my great grandfather was Milton Middleton, son of George Middleton and Rhoda Stewart. And any info along these lines would be great. Thanks for all you do!!! His mother's name was Sally Stewart and according to rumor, she was never married, however I found her on a census as a widow. This comes as a surprise to my mother, who had never heard that. James was married to Dora Thomas Stewart and he was one of Sally's 5 children, the other 4 being Rhoda, Will, Addie and Margaret. Rhoda married Blaine Sergeant (sp>) and Margaret married ?? Stepp. Will was killed as a yong man and Addie died in childhood. That's about it as far as brick walls. I sure would love to more about them.
