My mother had a friend Elsie Green and her dad had black lung disease and he died from it there in Colorado and her mother took all the kids and moved back to Kentucky. I got a lot of old pictures from her last year. Her dad is buried on Glade Park where my grandparents and great-grandparents are buried. The dust in the uranium mines is not quite as bad as the coal dust and they do spray it down with water. The radiation is monitored now and if it is above what it should be they shut the mine down. Coal mining is a lot more dangerous than any other kind of mining except maybe potash. There is a potash mine near Moab, Utah and it is so hot down there that the men can only work for a few hours at a time. Bob, My father was also a resident of Harlan Co. - in the early 1930's until he left for WW2. He lived a major portion of that time in the very poor Wallins Creek - but when his mother died from lack of proper medical attention, the kids were taken to High Splint. There was also much talk of a little cabin (on or near?) Black Mountain. My family was the Charles David Smith family - who actually called himself CD SMith. Sadly, I did not know your relatives, I wish that I could say that I did, although very likely my father or grandfather did. We had moved away from Harlan County by the beginning of WW2 and I was at the most six years old. I have been back for to visits, to places where we lived as children, including Lynch, and to Kitts where my mother lived as a child. We also visited my brothers grave in the New York section of Cumberland, where his grave is located. The only names I remember is Lambert who lived downstairs from where we lived. Sorry. Almost every thing is gone in Lynch including the commissary and hospital where my brother was born and died. There is a mining museum with lots of picture and names, I found my my father's annual group photo there. In Lynch there is a train engine in the old town depot. Thanks for writing. My dad had slate fall on him and broke his back working in the mines. We didn't live in the coal camps. Dad would go work and stay there and come home on the weekends. He worked for Island Creek Coal Co. for a while. That is the only one I can remember. After his back healed, he carried the mail on a mule for three years for $3 a day, 6 days a week. He went to Columbus the summer of 1949 and got a job there. The family stayed on Georges Creek until February of 1950 when we all moved to Columbus. (That was 58 years ago! WOW!) Dad held onto the Georges Creek farm, hoping to 'go home' one day. He died in 1965 in Columbus, having never gotten to go home. We buried him on a hill katty-cornered across the road from the farm, with his parents, his grandfather, his two brothers, his uncle and aunt. Life was hard for most of the people from Eastern KY. They were/are a tough lot and they are survivors. Sharon Young Jebavy <>< Former Georges Creek, Lawrence Co., KY Kid 1945-1950

Patrica When the Song by Tennessee Ernie Ford "Load 16 Ton and what do you get", about coal mining was popular, I asked my father who mined coal in Harlan County if he ever loaded 16 ton in a day. He looked at me an said many day he loaded as much as thirty tons. The miners then had to drill the holes for the dynamite, and load the dynamite to blow the coal to load. Providential day was badly hurt with a broken back, this and other bones when hit by a derailed coal car. I say providentially, he left the mine, completely health and inlisted in the Navy and retired from there. My grandfather lost a thumb and had other injuries. My brother died in the mining hospital at birth because of incompetent care. There were certainly many "Sins of the mines. Something else you may find interesting is the J haplogroups found among the Brocks and myself the sister haplogroup to J these two groups were found in an ancient Siberian tribe through dna testing. Although, these two groups are regarded as ancient Eurasian. This information can be found through an article written by the American Journal of Human Genetics. Just a little something something for anyone interested in pondering about dna. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Barbara Turner Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2008 11:51 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KYHARLAN] DNA of Green family What does the Q3 mean? Rene' I am only one, but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. - Helen Keller Disbelief in magic can force a poor soul into believing in government and business. - Tom Robbins "Tikkun Olam (to heal and repair the world) You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it" Rabbi Tarfun Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand. - Margery Williams, "The Velveteen Rabbit" **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music.
