In Colorado we have a family cemetery and we just bury people without asking anyone. It is free and lots of other people are buried there too. The families take care of it. I think it is the same in Kentucky in the family cemeteries. I have been noticing on the death certificates that sometimes it says buried by family. I couldn't find a death certificate for Malinda Fields. There were three, but two were black and they were not in Harlan County either. How do you get to Sarah and Millard graves from Straight Creek and Peter Branch. I know where to turn off 221 but with all the strip mining I do not know where else to go. Sarah is the daughter of my great grand mother Mary Jane Saylor Whitehead and Millard is the grandson of my great grand father George Washington Whitehead. We'll be in Kingsporrt Tennessee several months the summer. We will only be about 35 mile from Harlan County. Also your Tuner name fascinates me as my Father Ruie Adolphus Barnes was in the Navy and he had a close friend, one Chief Petty Officer named Turner who was stationed with him in Tampa Florida in the late forties and early fifties. Chief Turner often came to our house and dad spoke of him as a relative, either biological or honorary. As we always addressed him as "Chief Turner" I never knew his first name. Could he possible be a common kin? What do you think. Chief Turner was a career person as was my father, so he was likely in his fifties. That would have him born around the turn of the century (1900 - ten years more or less). Blessing on all your work. The dust in the uranium mines is not quite as bad as the coal dust and they do spray it down with water. The radiation is monitored now and if it is above what it should be they shut the mine down. Coal mining is a lot more dangerous than any other kind of mining except maybe potash. There is a potash mine near Moab, Utah and it is so hot down there that the men can only work for a few hours at a time. Elva, I'd like to see the old pictures sometime. I got a lot of old pictures from her last year. Her dad is buried on Glade Park where my grandparents and great-grandparents are buried. Author: janewhitis1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.harlan/14653/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Years ago (June 1998) there were a few paragraphs in the Kentucky Explorer telling that the Farmers in Harlan County were related to the Pulaski County Farmers. This was a narrative by Felix Gilbert Farmer of Clay Co., KY from May 5, 1898. He stated he was born in Harlan Co., KY, on August 22, 1836; his father was William Farmer, who was born in 1796 in what is now Hancock Co., TN. William's father Stephen moved the family to what is now Harlan Co. in 1797. Felix said Stephen's brother, whom he believed to be Eli Farmer, went to Pulaski Co. In about 1888, Felix had gone to a convention in London, KY, and met an Eli and Stephen Farmer, along with their father, from Pulaski Co. Felix stated, "We then found that we were of the same family: Stephen Farmer ,Betsey Ledford, William, Lewis, James, David and John." I have both a Pulaski Co. Eli and Stephen in my Farmer line, but cannot connect them to these Harlan Co. Farmers. If anyone can help me on this, I would appreciate it. My first Farmer in Pulaski Co., to my knowledge, was Joseph Farmer, who married Sarah Baker. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
