I'm in the middle of transcribing selected pages of the 1850 Hardin County census. In several cases a family lists a non-family member child. In most cases a family with the childs surname is found close by. Can anyone explain why a child might be listed with a neighboring family? I usually assume an elderly women within a family with a differant surname is probably a mother-in-law, but can't figure out what relationship a child might be. By the way, I plan on sharing my transcribed information when complete.
