    1. [KYHARDIN] Tax Records of Hardin County

    3. Dear Hardin County Experts, Have just been going over the tax records of early Hardin County. I have some questions: 1. Can anyone explain to me the "Counties" column of this record? Does it list the name of the county that the person actually lives in?... Like perhaps he owns land in Hardin County, but he lives in Mercer County? (Looking at James Brown, in 1795, I see that the county is Mercer (?) or Mason )?) or Nelson (?), Water Course is Crooked Creek). For most of the people, it lists Hardin County, but others have Green, Nelson, Jefferson, etc. 2. In the "For Whom The Land Was Entered" column, what can we assume if the name seems to related? For instance, Patrick Brown is taxed (1797) for land that was entered under the names of a) William Brown b) James Brown c) Robert Goode. I assume Robert Goode is probably not related...and James and William are. Of course, I know a little about the famous Brown brothers...Patrick, James, William and perhaps a John. If brother James was killed in the battle of Blue Licks in 1782, does that mean he can not have been the James Brown in this instance? Or is it possible that he bought the land ("entered" the land) before Hardin County was in existance and before he died? Or James is a father to these guys? Or ?? I have ordered the deeds (have the index) and suppose this will be clearer when I see them. But if anyone out there has an answer to my questions, I would be grateful. Kathie searching the James Brown who is the father to Joseph Brown, who married Susannah Carter in 1808 in Hardin County, KY.
