I usually lurk on this site for Bailey information, but this seems to be my time to talk. A purchaser at an estate sale could be any member of the general public who is interested in buying something they have for sale. They could be family, but most often it was just the locals trying get a bargain. The list of buyers at an estate sale can be useful sometimes as you might find others of the same last name and get a new first name to research to see if they are related. Having an estate sale doesn't mean the person had a will. It just means that the government had an interest in seeing that the estate was disposed of fairly and the interested parties got the money that wass legally coming to them. Especially if the estate owed money. I'm sure someone else could give a better answer than this. I don't know the legal jargon very well. Peggy

Now days, an estate sale can be just a way of disposing of a houseful of belongings. My husband's grandmother was being put into a home and they considered having an estate sale. You hire a company to come in, clean up and display (with prices) the items for sale. They can get between 15-25% of the profits for this service. This is very big in MO where I live. People tend to think of an estate sale as fancier than a garage sale.
