I descend from Mary Ann Ashby b. 1752 Stafford Co., VA, who was the oldest child of Thomas Ashby and Mary Ann McCullough. Their other children were: Elizabeth 1754 , Hankerson 1757 (never married; killed by Indians) Bladen c. 1759, Silas 1765 , and Thompson 1770-1773. I would like to compile a list of researchers who descend from this Ashby line or who are researching this line. So far, I have 6 names with emails addresses. If you would like to be added to the "researcher list" for this Ashby line, please contact me. My purpose is to share and compare information and the sources for the information. I think everyone will benefit. Some of my pet projects are: 1. researching the death of Hankerson Ashby. I don't think he died in Aug 1780, which has been used because the word "dead" was written on a military payroll record (payroll pay period ended Aug 1780). Who wrote "dead" and when it was written is unknown, but has been used by most everyone as the source for Hankerson Ashby's death date. Other records indicate he was killed in June 1782 and NOT in Aug 1780. 2. determining the specific military service units and dates of service of Hankerson, Bladen, and Silas... so it can be determined where they were from 1777-1782. 3. correcting some of the errors in Lee Fleming Reese' book and identifying sources for some of the material she published on this line -- especially identifying which material was based on family lore/tradition There are many mysteries to solve. At least, they are mysteries to me: 1. where did Thomas Ashby/Mary Ann McCullough live after 1757? And when/where did they die? 2. who were Mary Ann McCullough's parents? 2. what happened to their daughter Elizabeth? She was born (Overwharton Parish) -- and then what? 3. where were Bladen, Silas, and Thompson Ashby born? They are not in Overwharton Parish records. Family lore says Bladen was born in Bladensburg, MD. Does any record exist that places his parents living near Bladensburg? 4. it appears that Bladen Ashby was in military service through 1781. So when/where did he connect up with his younger brother Thompson Ashby (b. 1770-1773)? It appears that Bladen and Thompson may have come to KY together at some time between 1782-1785. Both appear on the same 1787 militia district list (Hardin Co., KY area). If this is correct, since Thompson was much younger (if born 1770, he was only 12 in 1782) and there is no evidence that Thompson served in any military unit as a boy, that his brother Bladen had to go somewhere to connect up with him for both to arrive in KY together by 1782. Brother Hankerson Ashby was in the military and dead by June 1782. Brother Silas was still serving in the military through 1787 and did not arrive in KY until estimated year 1788, so he did not go anywhere to get their youngest brother Thompson Ashby. I hope someone on the Ashby list descends from or is researching this line and will contact me so we can starting sharing and comparing information and sources. No doubt we may have the same information from the same sources, but something "new" might turn up if we collaborate. Helen Graves Lake Almanor, CA
