Dottie, I had completely forgotten about the test till you mentioned it today. Thank you. I forwarded the question onto one of my uncles to see if he'd be interested in joining the YDNA test. Could you give me more info. again on how one qualifies and what they have to do to take the test? Interested in any family that came from Pittsylvania Co, Virginia in the early 1800's. Both the FALLON and WRIGHT families came from Pittsylvania Co, VA about 1800. The Silas Twedell family also came from Pittsylvania Co. Son James Twedell married 4 June 1812 Nancy Harris. Nancy was the daughter of Charles Harris of Hardin Co, KY. Thanks, Dottie

Jean, I have done a lot of work in St. Michael's cemetery in Louisville. The records are not complete. The office has some of the St. Michael's burials but not all. It is my understanding that St. Louis was the Irish cemetery and that St. Michael's was the German cemetery. In later years burials were mixed. Martha

In Jan., 1802 and again in 1804 he was appointed constable. On Sept. 5, 1802, he was commissioned ensign in Cornstalk Militia of Cumberland County. Returned to Washington County. Married Nancy Hanks 1806. To this union Pres. Lincoln was born. Thomas brought to Ky. from Va. as a child, 1782. *************************** I am a JONES historian and genealogy researcher. My Jones line (1798 -1834) comes from the Meshack Creek area of Monroe Co. Kentucky (Cumberland Co up to 1820). I am researching the Jones ancestors of my GGG Grandfather Lemuel Jones and his twin brother Stephen Jones. Lemuel Jones married a Sarah Kirkpatrick about 1804 / 1805. Stephen Jones married an Elizabeth Black, daughter of Joseph Black. I know these Jones were twins and came from Virginia ... but specifically where in Virginia and who their Mother and Father names are have been researched since 2003 ... with no sure results other than it is believed their father was a William Jones. In my research of landowners near these Jones, I found a Thomas Lincoln had land in the early 1800s joining Meshack Creek / Turkey Neck Bend (Cumberland River) land of Gee / Jones / Kirkpatrick. I AM 99% CERTAIN THIS THOMAS LINCOLN IS NOT THE "FATHER" OF PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN! Hence, I believe the info on the website: http://www.burkesville.com/chamber/location.html is wrong. As is: http://www.burkesville.com/html/area_history.html Also wrong is: http://kentucky.gov/kyhs/hmdb/MarkerSearch.aspx?mode=County&county=29 And this Historical Marker: http://www.burkesville.com/html/historical_landmarks.html This Thomas Lincoln (born about 1780 in KY and died 1844 in IN) This Tomas Lincoln married about 1799 his neighbor Martha Patsy Gee (born 2/21/1782 in VA), daughter of Jesse Gee. In Cumberland Co KY, this Thomas Lincoln lived right next to his father, Hannaniah Lincoln. These Lincolns moved from Cumberland Co Kentucky in about 1810 to Ohio and later to Indiana. They had 10 children. In addition, in 1802, Jesse Gee along with Moses Kirkpatrick (my GGGG Grandfather) signed a bond as constable for Thomas Lincoln. This Thomas Lincoln was not the father of President Abraham Lincoln. I can provide more information as needed. I hope the State of Kentucky and Cumberland Co Kentucky officials will investigate and take corrective action. George Jones joneshistorian@yahoo.com PS: I would appreciate any leads regarding the birthplace / birthdate / parents of Lemuel Jones or Stephen Jones.
Jean, No, I didn't know that. I thought that Minton might be Irish but didn't know of a connection to Tipperary. I have not had much luck finding Anna Minton's parents. The closest that I have come is Willis & Serenna (Miller) Minter who are found in the 1850 - 1880 Hardin Co., KY Censuses but I haven't researched that enough to be sure. There is an Ann Minter, 8, in the 1860 Hardin Co., KY Census with Sarena, 40, as HoH. Willis died in 1860. The first time I know for sure that I have Anna (Minton) Carroll is in the 1900 Perry Co., IN Census as HoH, William died 1889. Thanks for your interest. Jane
I want to thank everyone for their help with my W.S. problem. I have sent your responses to Mary and she has printed them. She is in the process of moving, we all know how that goes. When she gets settled so she can work with what you all sent she will let me know if she finds the answer and I will let you know. You have sent a treasure trove of info, lots of sources and great offers to help her look. Thank you all and God Bless Char
Jane, I wasn't sure if you realized that Minton is a name with Tipperary roots as well. All of the families I mentioned are from an area around Nenagh. In the Griffith's Valuation, the name Minton appears there as well. There is also in the 1880 Louisville census a Patrick Minton who is listed as the fire chief. I had family from Nenagh, Cleary's, who worked in the fire department at that time. Jean
Jean, Thanks for the reply. Very good advice for research in Louisville. I have never researched there but it sounds like I should check out their resources and, it's close enough to be a day trip. Looks like I also need to study the history of Louisville with regard to Irish settlements. Patrick Carroll, one of William Carroll's sons moved to New Albany, IN and lived most of his adult life there. I have been trying to locate those descendants - he had five sons so I'm guessing there must be descendants. Thanks for your help, Jane p.s. Steve Greenwell was my oldest son's saxophone teacher. A very patient man.
Hi Jane, Many of my family left Hardin for Louisville, and some for Barren. I don't live in Louisville anymore, but returned this past fall to check out the great library and the cemeteries. I was absolutely stunned by how many graves had Tipperary written on them, and more specifically the surname Carroll. St. Louis Cemetery in particular. The Catholic Cemetery Office has computerized the name, place of birth, and death date for everyone in the local Catholic Cemetery. If you find a specific name, you can ask who bought the plot, and are there others in it? I got a few surprises this way. They are really nice at the office, but very busy. If you have more than one lookup, they request a written letter. St. Louis opened in 1876, prior to that it was St. Michaels for burials, and really there is no record of those, unless you can figure out the church, and go through the LDS. I have one record from the Hardin site, - Martin Hogan, born around 1835 according to the census, married Margaret Carroll in 1859. Charles Warren and a Cunningham were the witnesses. Later, my family lived in a house owned by a Cunningham in Louisville. My Hogan's and O'Meara's were from the same town in Tipperary. I know it involves the McCormack's, which is my main line. In a letter written about 1883, Frank McCormack writes to his brother Andrew that he is working for the Carroll's in Louisville, I think I figured out it was a tailor shop, owned with Brophy's. He kept jokingly referring to Mr.. Carroll as "O'Carroll of Carrollton", who has quite a story attached with him back in Ireland. I also had Howard's move into New Albany, Indiana, just across the bridge from an old area of Irish settlement. I see that you are in Evansville - I have family there still as well - the Greenwell's- and lots of them!! Jean
Hi Jean, My Irish roots (that I know of) are CARROLL and GAYNOR. My g-grandfather was William CARROLL, b.?1837, 1843, 1846, Co. Tipperary, Ireland; d. 1889, Perry Co., IN, buried St. Michael's Catholic Cem, Cannelton, Perry Co., IN. He married Anna MINTON, b. 1853, Hardin Co., KY. I don't have a marriage date or place for them but the first child that I have for them is James Dionysius, b. Oct 1874, probably Hardin Co., KY, christened Dec 1874 at St. Claire Church, Hardin Co., KY. I have not been able to find much more than that on him. I know there were other Carroll's in the Hardin Co. area, including Grayson and Edmonson, but I have not been able to make any connection. My gg-grandfather was George GAYNOR, b. 1832, possibly Co. Longford, Ireland; d. 1898. He married Eleanor Cathernine TERRELL, (d/o Armstead and Margaret (DAVIS) TERRELL), b. 1837, KY; d. 1899. They married 22 Nov, 1853, Hancock Co., KY. Both are buried at the Utility Cem., Hancock Co., KY. I would love to know more about your Co. Tipperary, Ireland roots and the relationship to Hardin Co., KY. For a long time, I have thought that there must have been relatives in the Hardin Co., KY area for William CARROLL to have chosen that as his destination. Jane Wheaton Evansville, IN

Some of these families appear in the 1870 census as railroad workers. I have traced some from Ontario, Canada. One of the earliest was Ignatius O'Brien, who is listed in an 1800 tax list for the area in Hardin. I have records from Canada, and Hardin County that show the families intermarrying for generations. Is there anyone else with Irish roots on the list? Thank you for any help, Jean
