Just keep in mind that most of the records at the LDS library are submitted by people like us. They are not primary sources. My husband's family was mormon~~they did their job and submitted genealogies. They have found major mistakes in previously submitted material and the church would not correct the mistakes. Case in point-- my mother-in-law's mother's middle name--My mother-in-law found that her mother's middle name was incorrect on the LDS file. My mother-in-law lived in Salt Lake so she went to the church to correct the mistake. They told her that she obviously did not know her mother's middle name because there records were correct! She had her mother call and they told her that she did not know her OWN middle name!! All I am trying to say is be cautious--and find original sources whenever possible. Jen

Now days, an estate sale can be just a way of disposing of a houseful of belongings. My husband's grandmother was being put into a home and they considered having an estate sale. You hire a company to come in, clean up and display (with prices) the items for sale. They can get between 15-25% of the profits for this service. This is very big in MO where I live. People tend to think of an estate sale as fancier than a garage sale. Johnston Edgar and Susannah Edgar lived in Grayson Co. in 1850. They both died 1859 are buried in Hardin Co. Nancy Moore cemetery with no record of their passing. Are Grayson and Hardin counties side by side? Do you think he might have died in Grayson and then been buried in Hardin to be beside their daughter Susannah who had died in 1851? Is his daughter Susannah Edgar b:20 Feb 1830 - 27 Nov 1851 recorded in a burial book? Thank you for any thoughts, Rochelle
I should say George H. Howard and Mary "Polly" Merrifield were in Nelson County, KY in 1800. not sure when Hardin County was formed but they may have never moved, probably just the boundaries of the Counties moved.
Rochelle, I looked in "Passing Generations" and also the newspaper abstracts book to see if I could find something on his death but with no luck. Priscilla
Did this lady Mary Pierpoint leave a will? Curious who her kin are. Will Book A 300 - Pearpoint, Mary - Report of Sale, 30 Jan 1808. Thanks Dave. It's the same guy the only George Howard in Hardin County on 1800 and 1810 is the same George H. or George Howard who married Mary"Polly" Merrifield. He is the son of John Baptist Howard his age on Census records and that of his wife fits perfectly. He was in Grayson County, Ky by 1820. -----Original Message----- From: David Lee [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, May 29, 2005 10:54 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KYHARDIN] Mary Pierpoint Will Book A 300 - Pearpoint, Mary - Report of Sale, 30 Jan 1808. Sandi of the Harris line, I live real close to you. I didn't notice till I sent you and Dottie your copies of my GGgrandfather's Recollections book that you live across the valley from me. E-mail me privately at [email protected] Julie
I am practically a stones throw from the Salt Lake Family History Center and have only been there once to do family research years ago. I understand that a lot of what I was able to look up there years ago is now available at either closer LDS family history centers or online. I am getting to a time in my life when I can put more time into my family history and I would like to know if any of you know what you can get at a local family history center that you can't online. It is still hard with kids to get to family history centers for me. Okay.... let's just say I'm a little disorganized and somewhat lazy and prefer to do this work from the comfort of my own PC. Any advice would be appreciated. And since I am so close to the Salt Lake Family History Center what can I do there that I can't anywhere else? Hopefully in the future I will be able to make some serious trips there and maybe look up some stuff for others on this site. Julie ----- Original Message ----- From: "M. I usually lurk on this site for Bailey information, but this seems to be my time to talk. A purchaser at an estate sale could be any member of the general public who is interested in buying something they have for sale. They could be family, but most often it was just the locals trying get a bargain. The list of buyers at an estate sale can be useful sometimes as you might find others of the same last name and get a new first name to research to see if they are related. Having an estate sale doesn't mean the person had a will. It just means that the government had an interest in seeing that the estate was disposed of fairly and the interested parties got the money that wass legally coming to them. Especially if the estate owed money. I'm sure someone else could give a better answer than this. I don't know the legal jargon very well. Peggy
This is what Dave said to do in his email: I got a page that said Document Number 1 I right clicked on this and saved to My Documents. I then went to My Documents and right clicked on file name. If I clicked Open it did not work but another opition was "open with" with an arrow beside it going to that box one choice was " Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" when I clicked on this it let me see the document and I was able to print it ( cntl +P) and it was large enough to be legible if any of those old hand written documents can be called legible. Dave What my computer said when I right clicked on "Document Number 1" was "save target as." I saved it to my Desktop and then right clicked on that icon and opened it with Windows Picture and Fax viewer. You can also open it with Paint. Picture and Fax viewer has the viewing option toolbar at the bottom of the page. Good luck......Peggy
Well, still want to see whatever documents their were concerning her estate, -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, May 29, 2005 7:58 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KYHARDIN] Mary Pierpoint I usually lurk on this site for Bailey information, but this seems to be my time to talk. Dear List In the book by Mary Josephine Jones for the wills from 1793 - 1866 which has an all persons index a George Howard was a purchaser in the estate of Mary Pearpoint on Jan. 30, 1808. Does anyone know who Mary Pearpoint was and who she married? Did she leave a will? Does anyone have more records on her estate? Would like to see who else might be on it. And Why George Howard was a Purchaser of her estate.
What Peggy says works great, but make sure that Quick Time is not your default. You want Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to be the one to work for you. Quick Time has it's uses but it can be a problem sometimes. If you what Peggy and Dave tell you, you stand a good chance of success. And it don't go to Quick Time. We got confirmation last year of one of my lines back to 1642 in Isle of Wight, VA through DNA because one of my greats left a will that gave everything to his wife and children. That was all it said: my wife and children. Most researchers agreed that my ancestors were probably his children, but we had no proof until the DNA matched a proven descendant of the original ancestor. I guess they never thought that we would come looking for them and they might should sprinkle a few bread crumbs for us to follow. Good luck with it. Peggy
I am having lots of problems with Quick Time in playing back music on web pages including mine and with some downloads. For some reason, I can sometimes download these documents from the clerk's office, but it is too small to read and I can not make it larger to read it. I suspect that Quick Time is the culprit and may be connected to my security settings on my computer. Do you know for sure that he had a will? Most people didn't. There might be some court administration records if he had property that had to be divided, though. Perhaps someone more familiar with Hardin County records than I am could advise you where to look for the records of someone who died intestate. Peggy
