    3. Carolyn, I know I can purchase Hardin County newspaper microfilm, but can I purchase the tax list? Early years included who originally entered, surveyed and patented the land being taxed, value of land. They would be taxed on livestock,, coaches, carriages, billard tables and retail stores and slaves also. Some would list the number of free males over 21 in the household. In 1795 the free while males 16 and over was put on the tax record. Also the kind of land, 1st rate (cleared land) 2nd rate (cleared with some woods) or 3rd rate (all woods) was listed in the early records. 1. Re: Tax List
    2. Rose Berry
    3. Tax lists are a wonderful way to track a relative. It lets you know when a person was in a county, if they lived on a watercourse, it will list that, how many acres they owned, their livestock, children, whether they were in the military, all men in that household over 21, and in some tax years, it even lists if they owned a piano. It will also let you know the others with that surname. Sometime, people moved between cenus and they won't show up on a census, but they will on a tax list. They aren't always accurate as to a count of children, but the other info is very interesting. If your county doesn't have a tax list available, you can look in phone book for a Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) and find out if they have that counties tax list on microfilm and reserve it and then when it comes in you can go there and view it! Good luck! 1. Nelson Co. Minute Books
    2. Helen Graves
    3. Don't forget, if your ancestors were in the Hardin Co. area before 1790, look in the Nelson Co., KY, minute books which listed head of household males within a certain militia district which were eligible to serve in the militia. I think the militia age requirement was 16 years during the 1787-1790 time period. Can someone on the list confirm that the militia age was 16? If there was another male in the household who could serve in the militia, their names were not given but the list indicated that there was another male in the household over age 16. For example, the name of Bladen Ashbey appears in the 1787 Nelson Co. KY minute book in the "Pottinger-Bear" district with the number "2" after his name. That's how I understand the minute books. Can someone on the list give a better description of the contents of the minute books or expand upon what I have said? I hope I got it correct. Helen Graves

I have seen the history books that explain he was the nephew of Jacob "Valley Creek Jake" Van Meter. But now I have run into conflicting information about who "Miller Jake"'s parents were. One source says "Miller Jake" was the son of 'Valley Creek" Jake's brother Henry Van Meter. (Then more confusion as some dispute that that Henry was Valley Creek Jake's brother.) Another source says "Miller Jake" was the son of John VanMeter of Berkely Co., VA. 1. Who were the parents of "Miller Jake" Van Meter? 2. Did "Valley Creek Jake" have a brother Henry Van Meter who married a Martha? Please cite your sources so I know if we are looking at the same sources or if you have a different source than I do. 1. Goodin-VanMeter marriage 1782-1791 in KY
    2. Helen Graves
    3. Abraham VanMeter was wounded by Indians and died in 1781 near Elizabethtown (Hardin Co., KY). His widow Elizabeth (Kline) VanMeter married Samuel Goodin some time between 1781-1791. 1. Does anyone have the date of the Samuel Goodin and widow Elizabeth VanMeter marriage? It would probably be under Nelson Co., KY marriages. 2. When did Elizabeth (Kline, VanMeter) Goodin die? Does someone have her death date and place? Samuel Goodin died in 1807 and his widow Elizabeth was one of the purchasers of items in his estate, so she much have died after he did. Many thanks, Helen Graves
