Debbie, Thanks! I got the will-clear reading. I'm wondering about your suggestion about deeds, tax lists, probate records. How do I access this information or can I online. I think Thomas Peters owned land in Hardin, but I do not know about James S. Peters. Could not find any land owned by James in info at Brown-Pusey House, but new info opens up all the time. By the way, do you know the how I sign up for the LaRue, Nelson, Washington Counties' list serves? Thanks again so much for your help! Carol
In 2003 there was a discussion on the Ashby list about VA granting land in KY. I saved some of the posts discussing this and re-read them again today. I would also like to add this information about land being granted by VA which appears in the book, "Land and Property Research in the United States" by E. Wade Hone (pub in 1997): "Virginia generated more bounty land records for its residents than any other state. At the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, Virginia ceded immense claims to the federal land system. However, they reserved the right to disperse bounty lands for their servicemen in the state of Kentucky and Ohio. "In Ohio, Virginia's activities were initially restricted to the Virginia Military District. Warrants for these lands were only given to those who serve in the Continental Line from Virginia. (Worth noting.) "During the 1830s, those who received warrants for the Military District in Ohio were eventually allowed to exchange their unused warrants for scrip. This scrip could then be redeemed in any one of the three newer districts that had been created for federal bounty warrants of the War of 1812 (which were) Indiana, Illinois, or Missouri. (Worth noting.) "By 1842, the warrants for Ohio could be exchanged for scrip redeemable AT ANY FEDERAL LAND OFFICE." (My emphasis.) Re: Kentucky land grants: "Those who served in state militia units were required to redeem their warrants in the Kentucky District." So, where your ancestor received bounty land from VA depended on whether he served in the VA Continental Line or in a VA militia unit. A more complete list of early recipients is found in Joan E. Brookes-Smith;s "Master Index, Virginia Surveys and Grants, 1774-1791" which documents only the bounty land grants given in Kentucky. Many Virginians lived in west/southwest Pennsylvania when the American Revolution started; they enlisted at Fort Pitt. Some served in VA units and some served in the 8th PA Continental Line. Pennsylvania never gave bounty land in Kentucky. If your ancestor served in the PA Continental Line or a PA militia unit, they did not receive land in Kentucky for that service. If they received bounty land in KY, it was for serving in a VA unit at some time. And then there were men who came into Kentucky as pre-emptioners (tomahawk rights). I have an ancestor who served in the PA Continental Line from western PA. Researchers have thought the land he got in KY was bounty land from VA because he served in a VA unit. Not so. There is no record that he ever served in a VA unit of any kind. He was a pre-emptioner. Per his deposition to get title to the KY land, he said in May 1776, he went to Kentucky, tomahawked his land, built a cabin, put in a crop, and stayed a year (the requirements). On November 18,1779, at a court held at the Falls of the Ohio, he and many other pre-emptioners made depositions stating when they came, where they settled, and how they improved the land they were asking for. His land claim was approved. That's how he got his 400 acres in Kentucky. (Ref: The Certificate Book of the Virginia Land Commission). However, he and the same land description appears in the "Master Index, Virginia Surveys and Grants 1774-1791". Perhaps someone on the list can explain to me why it would be listed in there when it was not bounty land for VA military service. Is it because as a "Master Index" it also lists the pre-emptioned land (early tomahawk settlers) as well as bounty land recipients? Helen Graves
Debbie. Yes, thanks! Mine is the first entry 4/24/1868 James Peters, Book F, p. 34. I wonder why there are no wills from late 1800's except for my James and an 1880 and then all the rest are relatively current. Do you know where I might find the will of Thomas Peters who d. 1858 in Hardin. I guess he's unlisted. Thanks! Carol Anderson
Carol, I sent the will on James Peters to your direct e-mail. Let me know if you have any problems with it. In regard to the will of Thomas, many did not have wills. None of my relatives I have research in Hardin County had a will. However, I have found a great deal of info in the deeds, tax list and probate records. Debbie, What search engine for the wills? Thanks! Carol
Carol, Go to www.hccoky.org/recordsearch/permindex.asp - then type in the name you are looking for under "Grantor" and click on wills at the bottom of the page and then click on "begin search." For marriage, put in at least one surname or part of the surname and click on marriage and then click "begin search." It you still have problem, let me know and I will e-mail individual records to you. Are the Hardin tax lists available on line? Would like to view if possible 1810,20,30,40,50,.60 on line? ANy info. appreciated! Thanks! Carol Anderson
How do you access this book compiled by Mary J. Jones? I'm interested in marriages in Hardin 1820's and 1830's of Thomas Peters' children. Any info. appreciated! Carol Anderson
Can I view Hardin Co. wills online or Hardin Co. Cemeteries-these are references cited by list serve members, but how do you get this info? Thanks! I'm looking for where my ggggf. James S. Peters is buried, and I'm also looking for a breakdown of the info on his 1867 will which is very difficult to read. Any info. appreciated! Carol Anderson
I descend from Mary Ann Ashby b. 1752 Stafford Co., VA, who was the oldest child of Thomas Ashby and Mary Ann McCullough. Their other children were: Elizabeth 1754 , Hankerson 1757 (never married; killed by Indians) Bladen c. 1759, Silas 1765 , and Thompson 1770-1773. I would like to compile a list of researchers who descend from this Ashby line or who are researching this line. So far, I have 6 names with emails addresses. If you would like to be added to the "researcher list" for this Ashby line, please contact me. My purpose is to share and compare information and the sources for the information. I think everyone will benefit. Some of my pet projects are: 1. researching the death of Hankerson Ashby. I don't think he died in Aug 1780, which has been used because the word "dead" was written on a military payroll record (payroll pay period ended Aug 1780). Who wrote "dead" and when it was written is unknown, but has been used by most everyone as the source for Hankerson Ashby's death date. Other records indicate he was killed in June 1782 and NOT in Aug 1780. 2. determining the specific military service units and dates of service of Hankerson, Bladen, and Silas... so it can be determined where they were from 1777-1782. 3. correcting some of the errors in Lee Fleming Reese' book and identifying sources for some of the material she published on this line -- especially identifying which material was based on family lore/tradition There are many mysteries to solve. At least, they are mysteries to me: 1. where did Thomas Ashby/Mary Ann McCullough live after 1757? And when/where did they die? 2. who were Mary Ann McCullough's parents? 2. what happened to their daughter Elizabeth? She was born (Overwharton Parish) -- and then what? 3. where were Bladen, Silas, and Thompson Ashby born? They are not in Overwharton Parish records. Family lore says Bladen was born in Bladensburg, MD. Does any record exist that places his parents living near Bladensburg? 4. it appears that Bladen Ashby was in military service through 1781. So when/where did he connect up with his younger brother Thompson Ashby (b. 1770-1773)? It appears that Bladen and Thompson may have come to KY together at some time between 1782-1785. Both appear on the same 1787 militia district list (Hardin Co., KY area). If this is correct, since Thompson was much younger (if born 1770, he was only 12 in 1782) and there is no evidence that Thompson served in any military unit as a boy, that his brother Bladen had to go somewhere to connect up with him for both to arrive in KY together by 1782. Brother Hankerson Ashby was in the military and dead by June 1782. Brother Silas was still serving in the military through 1787 and did not arrive in KY until estimated year 1788, so he did not go anywhere to get their youngest brother Thompson Ashby. I hope someone on the Ashby list descends from or is researching this line and will contact me so we can starting sharing and comparing information and sources. No doubt we may have the same information from the same sources, but something "new" might turn up if we collaborate. Helen Graves Lake Almanor, CA
