List Members, I'm getting bored. Anyone have a surname that they'd like for me to work on? Priscilla
Davis, Neill and Hayes. My gr-grandfather was Clayton Davis, born Dec. 28, 1841. His father was Robert Davis, born Oct. 19, 1797. Robert married Martha Smith. I don't know anything about Martha's lineage. I do have her name as my middle name. Clayton Davis married Gertrude Neill, daughter of James Barker Neill and Mary Francis Hayes. I don't have anything on James Barker Neill. I have Mary Francis Hayes as daughter of Randall Polk Hayes and Sarah Calvin. I draw a blank on both of these. I only have that information because it was on Ancestry.com so have not verified it. Mary Francis Hayes married a Neill who apparently died, then she married a Bleakley or Blakely and had 2-3 sons. When Bleakley/Blakely died, she later married a Smith. I do not know who his first name was. I know several are from Bullitt County. I can't guarantee they all were. Grandpa Clayton is buried in the Davis cemetery which is on the Fort Knox reservation. My cousin's husband, George Funk, told me he found the grave. Grandma Gertrude is buried in Bethany Cemetery on Dixie Highway in Valley Station. She was born Oct. 30, 1846 and died July 2, 1937. My grandmother, Mary Davis, married James Ernest Stovall of Stithton. She taught school before she met grandpa and got married. I would love to know where she taught. She was born Jan. 8, 1876 in Bullitt Cty and died May 28, 1959. Thanks Priscilla. I would greatly appreciate it. This a lot to ask but if you happen across any of these, you'd make my day, heck, my year! Sherrie Kahle Childers 8408 Fox Ridge Ct. Taken from "Hardin County, Kentucky Newspaper Abstracts 1902 to 1904" compiled by Carolyn Wimp. Rufus Holbert in the presence of Bro. Freeman, told the following story: He said Rev. Freeman and his brother, Sylvester Holbert, were great tobacco chewers. That Bro. Freeman was conducting a meeting at Howevalley and Syl was a regular attendant. One day when their spiritual natures were at a very high pitch, Bro. Freeman went home to dinner with Mr. Holbert. Before dinner, they got to talk- ing about themselves and one proposed to the other that they quit chewing tobacco, that they had no right to chew. The other agreed. They shook hands on it, then and there, threw the quids out of their mouths and the tobacco in the pockets was emptied into the fire. After a big dinner, Bro. Freeman complained that he was suffering terribly from the loss of it. Mr. Holbert sympathized with him and said he would give him anything himself for a good chew. Well, said Bro. Freeman, let's have one. They shook hands upon the idea and they have been chewing ever since. They stayed quit from just before dinner to a few minutes after dinner. Dump Gardner stood by and heard the story and he thought he could go that one better. He said he used to be a great chewer. That immediately after the race between Hardin and Bradley for Governor, he was very much exercised about the returns as the election was in doubt. One day he got word from town that Bradley was certainly elected. He was so mad that he threw the chew of tobacco out of his mouth and declared he would never take a chew as long as a Republican was Governor of Ky. He didn't and has never taken a chew since. Major C. W. Quiggins while tearing down a protion of the old Quiggins re- sidence on Main Cross Street made a remarkable discovery. He found a brick upon which was written his full name. What is unusual about the in- cident is the fact that the building was erected over a half century ago when he was but 8 years old, and he has no recollection whatever of the chiro- grapher of his signature. Friday, April 1, 1904 Mrs. Hannah Elizabeth King of West Point owns a ring that is more than 100 years old. It was made from a nugget of gold, given to Mrs. King's mother by her brother, Wm Withers. It is set with a beautiful ruby and was the wedding ring of Mrs. King's mother, who was Miss Delia Withers who married Hiram Withers. When Mrs. Withers died, the ring was given to Mrs. King who also was her wedding ring upon 2 occasions as she was married twice and widowed. The ring is a darker shade of gold than is seen now days. Mrs. King removed the ruby several years ago and replaced it with a gold dollar and had it set in a ring given to her daughter, the late Mrs. McHugh. Friday, April 15, 1904 Mr. Rufus "Daddy" Holbert, told the following story: When the cyclone did such damage in Louisville a number of years ago, that it was very severe in this section of Hardin Co. The wind, he said, blew so strong that it blew every drop of water out of a large stock pond and picked up the penny nails and drove them up to the head on the trees. This was the same storm when a fence rail was blown through a tree and half of it ex- tended out on each side. At the cyclone at Cecilian, ordinary shingles were driven into the weather boarding of Ambrose Cecil's house. Sam Glasscock tells the following good story on Eli Dorsey, the local reporter of the NEWS: Sam says when Eli was teaching school in his neighborhood, they worked him up to go snipe hunting one night. They gave him a bag and a tallow candle and stationed him in a dark ravine, while they went off to drive the snipe in. They went on home and left Eli standing there. It was not long until 3 o'clock in the morning when Dorsey came in. They asked him what was the matter, when the unsuspecting youth remarked, "I came to get another candle as the one you gave me burnt out."
Taken from "Hardin County, Kentucky Newspaper Abstracts 1902 to 1904" compiled by Carolyn Wimp. Friday, March 25, 1904 Nearly everyone remembers the very intelligent old blind man, Mr. Green, who lived near town (Elizabethtown) for a number of years. All the family moved away from the county except his son, Oscar. He is totally blind and lives alone. Henry Peck is his neighbor, says that Green does his own cooking, dish washing and house keeping and when several people peeped through the cracks of his house to see how a blind man could do such, he nailed strips over the cracks. He keeps a dog and at night frequently goes possum hunting and rarely ever returns without game. The day Mr. Peck told this story, he said he left Green at his place making shingles.
Taken from "Hardin County, Kentucky Newspaper Abstracts 1902 to 1904" compiled by Carolyn Wimp. Friday, February 19, 1904 R. S. Jones told the following story which happened shortly before the break out of the Civil War. Pendleton Ray, a cousin of Mr. Jones, was employed to dig a well on the Jeffries farm, which joins Mr. Jones on the south. The place selected was in a low place or rather a sink. Ray started the work and after digging 2 or 3 feet, struck a large flat rock, which he broke with hammer. When the rock was broken, it fell 12 to 15 feet into a cavern. Ray removed the fragments above, then descending the shaft, he removed what had fallen and began digging in the bottom of the shaft. He soon unearthed a human skeleton. On further investigation, he found that there were 7 of them lying side by side. Four of the heads lying in one direction and three in another. The bones were very large, much larger than the Caucasian. One jaw bone especially was much larger and longer than any that could be found. The bodies had evidently been placed there by some person but there was no trace or mark of human hands above except the flat rock which had been placed over the cavern. It is a settled fact that they were mound builders although no mounds are known of in the section. Mr. Jones saw the skeletons and can vouch for the truth of the story. He says the skeletons were reburied somewhere on the Jeffries farm. Ray joined the Confederate army and was killed in battle. The well is one of the very best in the section. Mr. Jones also has some charred wheat. Not far from the beginning of the Civil War, a wheat stack was struck by lightning on his farm and burned to the ground. He said that grains of charred wheat can yet be picked up on the spot almost in natural shape after having laid the more than 40 years. (Sonora News)

Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to [email protected] not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at [email protected] or in the evenings at [email protected] 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at [email protected] I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Kathleen Burnett List Mom [email protected]

Hey Larry, I'm back from a long vacation and I wanted to thank you for your work I see here. I thought the Harris line was with Col. Clark as settlers and recruits. I must have misunderstood. They were with Col. Clark as recruits though, correct? Also, You said in another message I only saw today since my return, that there are three Lonestars in Missouri. It's the Lonestar in Gentry Co., we are after. Thanks for all your work.
