    1. In search of the Harris's
    2. Larry S.
    3. Hello Harris researchers This is the second excerpt from the book, "From Here To Yonder" written by Clifton Harris. The book is out of publication, and has been for a number of years but a plan is in the works to place it on the web. That plan, however, may be years in the making, so in the meantime I will post excerpts from it, hoping it gives someone that extra little nudge that all of us need once in a while.. At the end of this piece I'll post, thanks to Clifton Harris (1895-1999), the source of this story. I have checked a few Hardin books and found the surnames of many of these men listed below but that does not surprise me, as 90% were recruited from the three counties, Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln, that ended up becoming the state of KY. Sometime, around the 1st of Aug., 1782, Bryans station, located I believe in Jefferson Co., was attacked by 400 British and their allied Indians. After being driven off they continued west to the Blue Lick river. The three county malitia responded to the call for help and 180 men were gathered at the station, all anxious for a good fight. Among the leaders of these men were, Daniel Boone, Stephen Trigg, and John Todd, all noted frontiersmen. After trailing the enemy to the river, it was Boone that suggested waiting for more men that they knew were on the way. He knew the enemy well, and knew they would not stop to fight unless it was a trap, or, they had their enemy hopelessly outnumbered. It was both, and because none of the three leaders could exercise supreme command, Boone's suggestion was ignored and at least 75 men were killed in this massacre This is a portion of a letter from Levi Todd to his brother Captain Robert Todd (the grandfather of Mary Todd Lincoln)after that battle *Colonel Logan, on the 24th, went back to the river with 500 men and found and buried 50 of the men. They had been stripped, scalped, and mangled in such a manner that you could not tell one from the other. As I know people in different parts of the country will be anxious to know the names of those killed, I will list them as I can now remember*. (This letter, in it's entirety, is in the Virginia State Library) Colonel John Todd and Stephen Trigg, Major Silas Harlin, Major Edward Bulger, Captains; William BcBride, John Bordon, Joseph Kinkead, and Cliff Overton. Lieutenants; William Gwin, John Kenneday, Robert Insign and John McMurtury. Privates; Francis McBride, John Price, James Ledgerwood, Joohn Willson, John Isaac McCracken, Lewis Rose, Matthias Rose, Hugh Cunningham, William Eadds, Evan Corn, William Smith, Henry Miller, Ezekiel Field, John Folley, John Pny, Hal Stern, Andrew McConnell, James Brown (surveyor), William Harris (it has been established that this Harris is not from the John Mayhew line ) William Stewart, Charles Furguson, John Wilson, John O'Niel, John Stapleton, Dan Greggs, Lewis Green, Dewey Polly, William Robertson, Gilbert Marshall, James Smith and Joseph Lindsay You can find this story in the book, "Background to Glory, The Life of George Rogers Clark" by John Bakeless. The entire chapter 25 is devoted to it. Kind regards, Larry --------------------------------------------------- Letter content was scanned by WinAntiVirus 2005. No threat detected.
