Searrching for the family of Silas DOWDELL and Sarah (JOHNSON) DOWDELL. Sarah was the daughter of William Johnson. They had three children, Thomas, Charles, and James (my ggg-grandfather.) I believe Sarah may have died in Hardin county in the early 1850's, however, I have been unable to find a death record. I have been unsuccessful in finding anything on Silas. I have located my direct descendant, James, in the 1860 census living with William and Sarah Veirs. Any help with any of these individuals would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Liz Wallace

I'm hoping someone could help me with the 1860 census. I found a Matilda Short in the 1870 Census Hardin County Kentucky in Elizabethtown PCT She had five children with her William 21, Charles W 17, Alice 13, Mary 9 and Fanny 6. She mentions all of them being born in KY. and Matilda Short was born in OH. I want to find out who her husband was. Could someone check the 1860 census of Hardin county for this family. Charlotte

Smallwood, 2 Dec 1850 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Article I found (sorry, don't have a ready reference for it).. David Cox Donan was married Dec. 21, 1772 in Surry Co., VA to Amy Davis Bouth. Sometime before 1790, accompanied by four sisters, wife and children, David traveled via the Wilderness Trail to Bryan's Station, near Lexington. Later, he and his family moved to Green Co. There, he is said to have been the first man to take up land near Greensburh, where his holdings included the spring near the Court House. He built the first log cabin there. David started raising tobacco on his land in Green Co. and transporting it via the Ky. tributaries to the Mississippi River and down to New Orleans for sale. According to his grandson, he built the first flatboat at Greensburg. David and Amy's children were: (1) David Crews b. 1774 mar. Eliz Gillaspy, (2) Eliz. Clinch b. 1776 mar. Andrew Kelley and Frederick Mouser, (3) Nelly Mar. ? Houk, (4) Margaret mar. Wm. South, (5) John Mansfield mar. Susannah Despain and Sallie mar ? Givens. David Crews Donan was born in either N. Car. or Va. His family went by "Donnan" at the time of his birth, the spelling changing to Donan in Rev. War days. He fought in the War of 1812. He acquired land in Barren Co. in 1816 and afterwards. He appeared on the 1819 tax list of Hart County, then newly formed from parts of Barren Co. David Crews married Eliz. Jan. 14, 1823, the only daughter of John and Millie White Gillaspy. He and Eliz. settled at Hicks' Spring, about four miles northeast of Three Springs, KY. Eliz. inherited land from her father (her only brother died in 1828), which along with her husband's land, totaled on the 1850 census 1900 acres. David died in 1841. A widow at 36, Elizabeth was left to raise their four sons, ages 15, 10, 8 and 4. She also had responsibility of from 14-24 slaves. The birth and death of each was recorded in the Donan family Bible, the slaves using the Donan name as their own, as was the general custom. When the slaves were freed, each family was given a plot of land upon which their cabin stood. Eliz. died in 1886. Aaron and Malvina were listed in the 1841 will as slaves. (This runs off of the page here, I can try for another copy.) David Crews and Eliz.'s first child, a daughter, died in 1829 at age 5. The sons were John Gillaspy Donan who mar. Henrietta Wood; Fountin who mar. Mary Melissa Ashby, Wm. who mar. Narcissa F. Minton and Dr. David Crews who mar. Bettie W. Hazell and Victoria Grady. John became the first elected Sheriff of Hart Co. and practiced law. His mother bought a house in Munfordville for John's use, later described as the largest one there. Dr. David Crews Donan received his M.D. in 1859 and returned to Bear Wallow, where he worked for a time with Dr. Pete Taylor before est. his own practice in Three Springs. The children of his first mar. were Martha L. 1873 mar. Milton t. Cann and Lucy Anne 1876 mar. Albert Edwards. The children of his next mar. were David C. 1882 mar. Adeline Jones Callaway and Arthur L. 1885 mar. Eliz. A. Sugg. Milton's parents were James Cann and Frances Gooch. Frances Donan Patchett tells of David Crews Donan and his family 1774-1974 in an interesting informative style. Check the Hart County Public Library for her book. Donansburg was named for Dr. David Crews Donan, who was sheriff of Hart Co. in 1869 and 1871. The brick house he built for his mother, remodeled, was still standing in 1977. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In skimming the Hardin County Circuit Court minutes, I found a reference that David Donan was sworn as attorney at the April term, 1796 in Elizabethtown. (I am assuming this would be David Cox Donan, the father of your John M. and David Crews.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I was just glancing again over the 1850 census page and realized that there is a Thomas B. Adams, age 46, farmer, living next door to John M. Donan. Also in the household are Amy, his wife, age 43, John Q. (or D.), age 18, Susan E., age 15, Rhodar I., age 12 (female), James D., age 10, Jeremiah, age 7, William H., age 5, and Robert T., age 2. Amy is the only one listed as not reading or writing, and John, Susan, and James are listed as attending school within the last year. Alexander and Charlotte Donan Kelly live 3 doors down. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GRAYSON CO. DEATHS: Mary C. Donan, white, 21, female, married, died 12 Dec 1859, cause of death, childbirth, daughter of L. L. Burks, born Washington Co. (There was also WHAHINLAN recorded, but I haven't a clue what that is supposed to be) Amy C. Kelly; age 5; female; married ?; farmer; died 25 July 1854; cause of death, flux; daughter of Alex & Charlotte Kelly ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Plain as anything in my Barren County marriage records is the marriage record of Thomas B. Adams and Amy or Anny Donan, Dec 20, 1830; Surety Wm. E. Moss. Consent father John M. Donan; witness Alexander Kelly. Alexander Kelly and Charlotte Donan were married Oct. 30 or 31, 1827. Surety was Andrew Ralston and minister was Sylvanus Bagby. Margaret Ellen Donan married William South on 24 April 1801. (I have not verified this, it came from a reference to the William South family bible.) William South was born on Nov. 5, 1780 and died on Aug 16, 1849. He is buried in Moore Cemetery, Hardin County (about 5 miles from my house). Margaret Ellen "Peggy" Donan was born Aug 7, 1783 in Virginia and died on Aug 7, 1865 in Anderson, TX, while on her way home to KY. William & Margaret Donan South had 13 children, which I can give you the names of if you want them. Sarah "Sally" Donan married William Dodson Givan on Dec 14, 1798. William Dodson Givan was born on Nov 2, 1759 and probably died between 1827 and 1850. Sarah "Sally" Donan was born in 1787 in VA and death date unknown.
