Inf. Co. F. Application # 416881, certificate # 412622 OH, on March 23, 1881, Mathias filed as an invalid. Application # 1013192, certificate # 773921 (OH) his wife Mary S. Anderson, filed as a widow on Aug. 23, 1910. >From the files: In 1889 he resided in Washington Twp. Scioto Co. Ohio. In 1906 they resided in Portsmouth Ohio and he was 70 years old. Mathias was born April 8, 1835 in Greenup Co. Ky. and died August 17, 1913. One of the testimonials for the pension application came from James Anderson who was age 45(?) in 1887 and stated that he was a nephew of Mathias and listed his residence as Greenup but had a post office address of Portsmouth. He was in the same company in the Civil War as was Mathias but was a prisoner (?)during the time that Mathias stated he was injured. The pension file also contains several pieces of correspondence trying to prove the marriage of Mathias and Mary. There was a letter from the clerk (County clerk?) in Ohio* in 1913 stating that the records from that time period had all been destroyed in a fire. (*I copied down "Ohio" and yet Mathias says they were married in Rown (sic) County, Ky. Perhaps, I copied the information incorrectly.) There was also a letter in the file explaining that the only proof of the marriage was a framed certificate that the widow kept on her wall. The pension file in the National Archives does contain a colored certificate of marriage, so Mary must have had to give up her framed marriage certificate to obtain her widow's pension. The certificate states that Mathias Anderson of Greenup wed Mary S. Christy of Fleming Co. KY on April 1, 1868 at Morehead. They were married by the Rev. (Humphry?) Witnesses were Jack Wright and James Wright. In the application that Mathias himself filed, he stated that he was married to Mary Sanderson (maiden name: Mary S. Christy) April 1, 1868 in Rown (sic) Co. KY) by Rev. Humphrey and that he (Mathias) had had no previous marriages. He was asked if he had any children at home that were under the age of 16 and he stated that he had one: born Oct. 29 1883 (name illegible, Elia vera?) (They are listed in the 1900 census in Portsmouth, Ohio.) Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to read all of the information contained in the file.
