Dear Researchers of Greenup County, Kentucky, The oldest Greenup County, Kentucky document I have found which includes a COOPER is the 1810 U.S. Census. Charles COOPER was the only Greenup County resident of that surname in 1810, yet Charles COOPER was NOT included in the 1811 census of Greenup County, as listed by Biggs and McCoy on page 39 of their History of Greenup County, Kentucky. In 1810, Charles COOPER was between 26 and 45 years old. There were one male and two females in his household who were under ten years of age, and one female who was between sixteen and twenty-six. My research in Lawrence County, Ohio revealed a Charles COOPER on the tax lists as early as 1818. The Lawrence County, Ohio Charles COOPER was enumerated in the 1820 and 1830 Censuses, and was on the Lawrence County tax lists up to 1834. There were no COOPERs in Lawrence County, Ohio from 1835 through 1837. If this Charles COOPER were a match with the 1810 Greenup County Charles COOPER, then in 1810, Charles COOPER would have been between twenty-six and thirty years old. In Greenup County, Kentucky, 8 Jun 1835, William S. DICKERSON married Mary COOPER. The Bondsman was Harvey COOPER, and consent was given by Mary COOPER's father, Charles COOPER. Another "Charles COOPER" reference: The 1837 Cincinnati, Ohio City Directory contained a "Charles COOPER, Tobacconist" in that year ONLY. In May 1838, "Charles COOPER, Deceased" was mentioned in a Greenup County Apprenticeship document, in which sons Hugh and Granville/Greenville COOPER were bound out to Willis COOPER, to be instructed in the "three r's" and agriculture until they reached the age of 21. Please correct me if I am on the wrong track, but it seems that these documents mentioning Charles COOPER are all referring to the same person. If that is correct, Charles COOPER was living in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1810, in Lawrence County, Ohio 1818 through 1834, and back in Greenup County from 1835 to his death in 1837 or 1838, with possibly a short time in Cincinnati. Charles COOPER would have been born between 1780 and 1784. Can anyone provide more details on Charles COOPER, who seems to hold much promise in the search for William COOPER's parents? Thank you so much. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
