    1. [KYGREENU-L] The Given Name "Scythia"
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of Greenup County, Kentucky, Recently, William Turner posted the name of an ancestor, "Scicha CAIN", who married John BOYLE. Her given name has been found with various spellings, such as "Scitha" and "Sitha". Whatever the name was actually intended to be, it apparently was troublesome to the unlettered residents of Eastern Kentucky, who tackled it the best they could. May I submit that Miss CAIN's given name may have been "Scythia" [pronounced "SITH-ee-uh"]? Scythia was a land mentioned in the Bible, which was located, in its origins, above the Black Sea, the area now known as the Ukraine. A side note: this area is also referred to as "Magog" in the Bible. The fact that Scythia was a word known to students of the Bible may have resulted in its use as a given name, since names of Biblical origin were sought in the early years of our country, more so than today. Granted, there could be other possibilities for Sitha CAIN, but I humbly submit "Scythia" as one candidate. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
