CARTER CO following article condensed from pages of Ashland Daily Independent, page 2,Nov 10, 1881 Intense Excitement reigned in Grayson on Wednesday of the second instance because of a bloody shooting between, Steve STAMPER, Milton FOSTER, and Bruce ALFREY, all Rowan Co Residents. A dispute arose over the correctness of statements madeunder oath in a trial of moonshinners before the U.S. Commissioner Bowling. ALFREY called STAMPER a liar; STAMPER drew a revolver and fired on ALFREY, hitting him in the hand. FOSTER started to run, STAMPER shot him, the ball taking effect between the elbow and shoulder in the miscles of FOSTERS left arm. STAMPER started to run, FOSTER and ALFREY fired on him at the same time. FOSTER missed but the ball from ALFREYS .32 cal. revolver struck STAMPER between his tenth and eleventh rib, passing through his body and out below the lower end of his breast bone. STAMPER is recovering in the Grayson Hotel. Dr Louis PRICHARD is in attendance. FOSTER was before the court for illicit distilling Nov 17, 1881, pg 2, Bruce ALFREY was tried in Grayson last Thursday. All charges gainst him were dismissed because of insufficient proof. Jan 16, 1864, 13 yrs, 4 mos , 24 days The Tabor Cemetary/Old Ancestors Cem lies on the farm of Joe Skaggs, on a point northeast of his home off the Limestone-Maulk Ridge Road .There are at least 35 graves, most of which are unmarked.Cattle have run in the cemetary forr decades and many of the markers are down and in FRagments, The markers read: G.H.
