Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, This message has two parts. First, I must correct an error in the message I posted yesterday. Pierson/Pearson McCoy was a son of Alfred "Alf" McCoy, not of James McCoy. It is correct, however, that Pierson McCoy took the mail across the Ohio River from Haverhill, Ohio to the village of Greenup, Greenup County, Kentucky. James McCoy was the postmaster of Haverhill in 1880. Alf McCoy was an older brother of James McCoy. Second, I found the names of the five post offices that were in operation in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1874. I do not know about the years before and after 1874. The five were: Duval's Landing, Greenup (the village, formerly Greenupsburg), Kenton Furnace, Lynn (formerly Liberty) and Russell. The source for this information is Collins's ~History of Kentucky~. There is a passage in Biggs's ~History of Greenup County, Kentucky~ entitled "Postmasters of Greenup", page 53. According to this passage, John Moran was appointed Postmaster of Greenup on July 8, 1872. I am assuming this refers to the village of Greenup, formerly known as Greenupsburg. The next appointment listed is William M. Stevens, appointed on December 26, 1882. John Moran was still serving as the postmaster of Greenup Village in 1880. I know this because John Moran is enumerated in the 1880 Census of Greenup County, dwelling 46, page 3B, as Postmaster/Merchant and a resident of the town of Greenup. It is not stated whether the post office in the village of Greenupsburg/Greenup was in continuous operation from 1872 through 1882, but that was probably the case. Assuming there was a post office in Greenup Village at the time Pierson McCoy was taking mail across the Ohio River from Haverhill, Scioto County, Ohio to Greenup, it might have been due to the mail packet (steamboat) dropping off Greenup mail at the Haverhill Landing instead of on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. There was an older Pierson McCoy living in the town of Greenup in 1880, in dwelling 50, four households from John Moran. This Pierson McCoy, 63 years old in 1880, was a retail grocer. His wife was Mary Ann Van Bibber. Across the Ohio River, directly across from the mouth of the Little Sandy River and Greenup Village, was the village of Haverhill, Scioto County, Ohio. Brothers James McCoy and Alf McCoy each had a store there. The McCoy stores were situated across the street from each other in Haverhill. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper P.S. Based on the above information, it seems more likely that my third-great grandfather William Cooper was a resident of Scioto County, Ohio rather than Greenup County, Kentucky in 1880. He could have been "hanging his hat" anywhere, though. In the 1880s, there were at least two boarding houses in the village of Haverhill. One was owned by Charles Ault.

Sandy, I wish I could say that I can help with your Gilmores, but I can't. I did go through the Lawrence County, Ohio website loooking for an obituary or a record of death. There was no evidence of one. The Lawrence County library does have newspapers on microfilm pretty consistently from 1852, so it's possible that there was an article in the paper (local news). You may want to see if someone can check the newspapers around that date for the news of the wreck. It might possibly contain some information that might help. - Jean Griesan -----Original Message----- From: bugnut [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 19, 2004 7:55 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [KyGreenup] Robert Lee Gilmore & wife Mary Pollock/Pollack Looking for parents of ROBERT LEE GILMORE born March 4, 1861 (possibly in VA) died April 26, 1907 (from train accident in Portsmouth [Scioto Co] OH, or Ironton [Lawrence Co] OH or Russell [Greenup Co] KY) He worked on the railroad. buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth [Scioto Co], OH Also looking for parents of his wife MARY GERTRUDE POLLOCK or POLLACK born abt 1867 in NY died about 1926 Where is she buried?
