    1. [KyGreenup] 1880 Iron Furnaces: Greenup County, Kentucky and Nearby
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, As well as I can determine, there were five iron furnaces in operation IN Greenup County, Kentucky at the time of the 1880 Census. 1. Caroline Furnace (built in 1833) operated until 1890. 2. Raccoon Furnace (built in 1833) was "not operated after 1884", so it might well have been operating in 1880. 3. Hunnewell Furnace (built in 1844) was rebuilt in 1870 and had its last blast in 1885. 4. Pennsylvania Furnace (built in 1848) operated until 1881. 5. Kenton Furnace (built in 1856) operated until 1882. Bellefonte Furnace was located in Boyd County and operated until 1893. When it was built in 1826, Boyd County had not been formed yet and so Bellefonte Furnace was in Greenup County until 1860. There might have been employees of Bellefonte Furnace living in Greenup County in 1880. Boone Furnace was located in Carter County, not far from Greenup County. There might have been employees of Boone Furnace living in Greenup County in 1880, if Boone Furnace was operating in 1880. In 1880, Robert Griffith, age 49, born in Kentucky, was an Iron Ore Miner in the Hunnewell Post Office area, Precinct Five, Greenup County, page 117C. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
