Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, There were seven iron furnaces in operation in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1870, as well as I can determine. Therefore, in the 1870 Census, any men identified as furnace hands in Greenup County were associated with one of these seven iron furnaces: Caroline, Raccoon, Hunnewell, Laurel, Pennsylvania, Buffalo or Kenton. In the 1870 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, John Collins was enumerated as an Iron Furnace Manager. He was 32 years old, born in Pennsylvania. His wife Elizabeth was 28, also born in Pennsylvania. Query: Which iron furnace was John Collins managing in 1870? Lafayette Spriggs and Benjamin F. Spriggs were living sixteen and fifteen households from John Collins in 1870. Benjamin F. Spriggs was an iron ore miner in 1870. James Ruggles, age 77, was twelve houses from John Collins. It appears that Benjamin F. Spriggs was associated with the iron furnace that John Collins was managing, at least in 1870. Thank you for your help! Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
