Dear Researchers of the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, In ~History of Greenup County, Kentucky~, Nina Mitchell Biggs wrote that John Pratt and Eliza Bellow had a son whose name she did not know. The "mystery son" would have been born about 1823 and was the firstborn child of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow, who were married in Greenup County, Kentucky on February 20, 1822. Some researchers have surmised that George W. Pratt was the firstborn son of John Pratt. Indeed, several facts seem to point to this person as the son whom Ms. Biggs did not know. I have found another candidate for the firstborn son of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow. He is Jonathan H. Pratt, whose name was apparently either Howard Jonathan Pratt or Jonathan Howard Pratt. In the 1870 Census, he was listed as Howard J. Pratt, in Miami County, Kansas. In the 1880 Census of Wea Township, Miami County, Kansas, Jonathan H. Pratt was enumerated on page 519B. He was recorded as 57 years old, born in Kentucky. According to the 1880 Census, his father was born in Vermont and his mother was born in Kentucky. This fits the requirements for the son of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow. In 1880, George W. Pratt's father AND mother were said to be born in Vermont. Granted, the Vermont birth of his mother might be an error. There is more information which strengthens the theory that Jonathan Howard Pratt/Howard Jonathan Pratt is a match, in the 1850 Census of Cheshire Township, Gallia County, Ohio, page 459 (stamped number) or page 918 (following the hand-written numbers), dwellinghouse 1032. In Gallia County, Ohio in 1850, Jonathan H. Pratt was 27, born in Kentucky. His wife was Sarah, 25, born in Kentucky. Enumerated immediately before Jonathan H. Pratt was William Ravenscraft, 36, farmer, born in Pennsylvania. William's wife was America, who was 22 years old, born in Kentucky. This was America Pratt, daughter of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow, who married William Ravenscraft on March 20, 1843. In 1850, the children of Jonathan and Sarah were: Virgil, 5, KY; Gertrude, 3, KY; and Cassius, 1, Ohio. The 1870 Census of Wea Township, Miami County, Kansas shows the birthplace of farmer Howard J. Pratt's children and gives clues as to his migrations. His wife's name was Sarah. She was 45 in 1870, born in Kentucky. Howard J. Pratt's property was valued at $23,950/$13,000. Their children, as shown in 1870, were: Cassius, 20, KY; Kossuth, 19, Ohio; Horace, 16, KY; Harry C., 14, KY; Howard, 12, KY; Charles H., 9, KY; Anna, 8, KANSAS; Blanche, 6, KS; Cornelia, 5, KS; Terrie, 2, KS. The next dwelling was Howard Jonathan Pratt's son Virgil Pratt, age 23, born in Kentucky. Virgil's wife was Emily, 21, VA. Thus we see that Jonathan Howard Pratt was apparently living in Kentucky about 1849 or into 1850, but he appeared in the 1850 Census of Gallia County, Ohio. From about 1854 to about 1861, he was in Kentucky. About 1861 or 1862, he migrated to Kansas. Perhaps his exodus from Kentucky was motivated by the Civil War. He appears to have been in Kansas from about 1862 at least through 1880. It is important to identify the firstborn child of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow, in order to find their whereabouts and their migrations. Perhaps John Pratt lived for a time in Gallia County, Ohio. Query: Was John Pratt's brother Lott H. Pratt's middle name "Howard"? Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
