    3. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, John Belew (Bellow) was enumerated in the 1820 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, page 179. There were seven persons in the household: three males and four females. One male was ten years of age or younger. One male was between ten and sixteen years old. The head of the household, John Belew/Bellow, was between 26 and 45. There were four females age ten or younger. There was one female between 26 and 45. Presumably, this was that same John Bellow who had a sister named Eliza Bellow who married John Pratt on February 20, 1822 in Greenup County, Kentucky, with John Bellow standing as security for the bride. At the time of the marriage, John and Eliza Bellow's father (name unknown to me) was a resident of Alabama and a widower. Eliza Bellow was born in 1804. Therefore, in the 1820 Census, she would have been in the age category of either ten to sixteen or sixteen to twenty-six. Neither age category was represented in the John Belew household of 1820. The Bellow surname is like quicksilver, flowing into a dizzying array of variant spellings. Here are 22 variant spellings, in alphabetical order: Balew, Ballew, Balloo, Baloo, Balooe, Balow, Beleu, Belew, Belleau, Bellieau, Below, Belue, Bilieu, Billow, Billue, Bilyeu, Birlew, Blow, Blue, Boileu, Bolew and Boliew. Listed immediately before John Belew in 1820 was Lot Pratt. Lot(t) Pratt was a brother of John Pratt. John Pratt was twenty years old in 1820. There was no male of the appropriate age bracket to have been John Pratt in the household of Lot(t) Pratt in 1820. Query: Where was John Pratt in 1820, two years before his marriage to Eliza Bellow? Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

    3. Randall, John Bellew.....My great, great grandmother was Isabinda Bellew who married William Bradford. Her brother was John Garrett Bellew. Supposedly their parents were John Bellew (b. 1789 in North Carolina and d. 10-24-1857 in Little Sandy, Greenup County. Kentucky) and Margaret Garrett (b. abt. 1789 In South Carolina and d. bet. 1840 and 1850 in Greenup County). I have looked for confirmation of these facts (and of William Bradford) for some time. My records show John Garrett married Mary Jane ? and both died in Carter County after 1870. Oh, at one time I sent you some copies of papers from my grandmother's bible. Did you get them? Pat Myers
