Author: wwalker1950 Surnames: Walker, Bennett, Rice, Secrest Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.greenup/6319/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In an article recently discovered at Ancestry.com printed in the Portsmouth Times (Portsmouth, Ohio) on Saturday October 27, 1894 entitled "CAUGHT" gives a vivid description and apparent motive for the Murder of Edward Perry and the arrest of 4 suspects John W. Walker, Thaddeus Bennett, William Rice and William Soards all from Greenup county. In the last part of the article it states that they were all released for lack of evidence. Firstly I find this most intriguing due to the simple fact that three of these men namely Walker, Bennett and Rice are all close family ancestors. Secondly, because I have not been able to find out if anyone was ever convicted of the crime. I came accross two other articles, One dated November 17, 1894 that actually states that a Mr. William Courtright, the postmaster at Springville Ky gave a statement to the Portsmouth Times indicating that a relative of Thaddeus Bennett was confident that Thaddeus was to confess to knowing more information of the disaperence of Ed Perry but said he had nothing to do with the murder and that he only helped remove the body from the woods where it was hiden and attached a large stone to it and threw it into the Mill pond. He then goes on to say that Thaddeus Bennett was going to incriminate a certain William Secrest, son of Dr. Secrest of Springville. Indicating he was murdered in order to keep him quite about an arson incident where Wm. Secrest lit fire to his home in order to get the insurance money. The second article dated Nov 29, 1894 written by the editor of the Portsmouth times indicated that recent murders in Greenup County has influenced many people with evidence to keep quite for fear of retaliation and he goes on to say with good reason. In so many words he sums up by saying that he hoped that those that perpertrated the murder would be eventually brought to justice and finishes with this poem: "Time at last sets all things even" and if we but watch the hour There never yet was human power, which could evade if unforgiven The patient search and vigil long of him that treasures up a wrong." Any information on this event or the people involved would be much appreciated. And thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jeanjo1 Surnames: Cain, Hood, Gants Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.greenup/6317.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have Cain's in my husband's genealogy. My husband's Cain was Mary Anne (Polly) Cain d/o Jacob Cain. In 1850 she had Anthony Cain living in her home who was probably related to her, possibly as a younger brother. (A little more about Anthony later with census info). She was married to Andrew Hood Jr. Both Cains were originally from VA. There was also Margaret Cain, d/o Robert Cain, who married Henry Hood (Henry was brother to Andrew Hood) nothing more is listed about this Margaret Cain in the Tunis Hood book. Nothing more is listed about Robert Cain or Jacob Cain either. Robert and Jacob Cain each probably had other children. Series: M432; Roll: 202; Page: 162 (KY, Greenup, 2-Dist) 1850-07-27 Andrew Hood, 66, farmer, Ky Mary Hood, 62, Va Jesse Hood, 21, farmer, Ky William Hood, 15, laborer, Kenty Francis Hood, 21, Kenty Anthony Cain, 50, farmer, Virginia There may have been 2 Anthony Cains living in two homes in 2nd dist of Greenup in 1850 but it appears to be the same one to me (aged 50 from Va). He was in the home of Joseph Gants and his wife Eveline on July 30 1850 page 168 of the same Greenup census. It looks like his living situation was not too stable. Maybe he was doing farm labor and moving about? He would have been about 35 when Margaret was born, I think. He could have been Margaret's father. Do you know anything about Joseph Gants or his wife in your records? He does not appear in our family's history. I do have a suggestion that you may have already tried. It is so simple you probably already tried it. I'll send it along anyway. Have you tried looking for a death certificate? If Margaret lived into her 60's many states had started death certificates by then. Some of the early certificates may not contain much information and others would. I don't know what the state of things was in MO. You might try looking for death certs for the two other Cain children too. In some references I think the name Cain is sometimes spelled as Kane but most often as Cain. Jean Johnson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
