Hello Dave Dollard. I notice in the V98 #11 of the KYGREENU-D that you were related to a Rebecca Fannin. I am still trying to find the wife of Stephen Fannin born in 1806 , and married about 1826 to i think a "Rebecca". Stephen Fannin's parent are John D. Fannin, sr. and Mrs. Keziah. My wife's line goes back through George Bryant fannin, born 1825 in Lawrence CO., KY. and married Louise Clay. I am Paul Leadingham of Frederick, MD., any help will be appreeciated.
Hi Jean, Dave, and all, I too am having a problem finding information on my family, and when I started my research, my mother who is 80 couldn't understand why I wanted to dig up the past. After I read Jean's and Dave's letter to her today she said that her mother always said we were Black Irish. My ggrandfathers name was Merdith WILLIAMS married to Jane MCSWEENEY. I have also been told there was Indian blood in our ancestry but I can't find where. Then I've been told my gggrandfather was 3rd cousin to Queen Victoria. So I may be Melungeon, or Royalty, who cares? How many people in the world today and especially in the south, where there were slaves can truly say they don't have some mixed blood? I think not many. I would love to know what mixture I am. I am not prejudiced and believe God loves us all. I am collecting all the information I can for my children, because their dad, his mother and 6 siblings all died of cancer and if they and their children know this it may help to save a life. Sorry to be so lengthy but I felt a need to get my two cents in. Mary health@nidlink.com
Dave, Since I sent the original message to the list, will answer here as well. At this point, I have nothing beyond Sarah or Julie J FANNIN's name, so would sure be happy to hear anything the rest of you might be able to share. The known Melungeons I referred to were indeed the Brown family of [mostly] Morgan and Magoffin counties - I go back to Elijah Brown and Alcey Coffee of Morgan County. And, most of the information I have on the family comes from Patricia Baldwin in Denver, KY and Dave Auxier, author of "The Auxier Family". My mother grew up in the little Washington town where they filmed the TV show, "Northern Exposure" and I've spent most of my life near San Francisco ... and with Mother suffering from psychogenic amnesia up until the time of her marriage to our father, my sister and I learned almost nothing about our ancestors or any living relatives. Mother died earlier this month at 86, and took with her any clues to her family we might have had firsthand. For some reason, she and other family members refused to even acknowledge each other's existance to anyone outside themselves ... even husbands and children. For fifty some years, we've been denied any "family" on our mother's side .... and the older we get, the more deeply we feel that lack. There were deep dark secrets in that family - as there probably are in most everyone's - but we've learned of a few and they were doozies! But, for better or worse, we do want to find our Kentucky roots. I suspect much of the secrecy was to hide anything that might lead others to realize our family wasn't strictly WASP. I was told by one Greenup native that her mother still refers to some people who might be my relatives as "those dirty Nichols up the hollow..." She also described them as "Mulligans" and i suspect that was her way of saying Melungeon, rather than suggesting they were Irish in ancestry. Have to chuckle at the idea of my mother's family attempting to hide any Portuguese roots, however far removed they might be. Here in California, w live in a farming and ranching area where most ALL our neighors are no more than second generation Portuguese ... and on seeing my mother when she visited, most were sure she must be related ... she looked so much like THEIR mothers ! So, will be happy to share what I have with any of you ..... the particular surnames I do know now in my family include STANLEY, MARTIN, NICHOLLS, PRATHER/PRATER, STEVENS/STEPHENS, BROWN, COFFEE/COFFEY or FANNIN. Locations are mostly in Greenup, Morgan or Magoffin counties, Kentucky, Scioto County, OH or Kanawha County, West Virginia... and Antrim or Charlevoix counties in Michigan. Hi Jean & all, Very interesting note. My own father (1898-1960) never talked of his family either, but I found early in my research that we are Irish and that his way of dealing with the prejudice shown against the Irish people of that time was simply to deny his Irish ancestry. My wife died nearly 5 years ago of cancer. I found out about 2 or 3 years ago that cancer runs in her mother's family. When I asked her mother about this, who's still alive at age 90, she acknowledged it and said "it's so embarrassing, what would people think". I'm afraid my response did not reflect a great deal of sensitivity. I don't think I'll ever understand the social standards our parents or grandparents grew up with. But, these two instances make me wonder if "talk to your oldest relatives", as recommended by most experts, should really be the first thing a person does when beginning work on their family's history. The Sarah or Julie J. FANNIN who married Alford T. BROWN mentioned in your note was the niece of my gr gr grandmother Rebecca Fannin. Most of us who have ancestors from eastern KY and sw VA have heard periodic family recollections indicating Indian, or now a days, Melungeon, ancestors. But I don't recall mention of this in the Fannin family. When you said "that her family was predominantly Melungeon and Lumbee Indian", were you referring to the Fannin family? Or were you referring to the Brown or Nichols family? -- Dave Dollard e-mail: dollard@cdmnet.com or dollard@primary.net Dollard Family Genealogy Page: http://www3.primary.net/~dollard/

Will sign in as a new member, too .... although some of us have corresponded for quite some time. I'm delighted to see this list getting started! My grandmother was Dora Bell NICHOLS, (26 Nov 1878 - 15 Apr 1939) from Greenup, daughter of Riley and Maggie BROWN NICHOLS....descendants of John Haymond and Cassandra Wilcoxin Nichols. We know now that Maggie Brown was the daughter of Alford T. and Sarah or Julie J. FANNIN BROWN, of Morgan County and that her family was predominantly Melungeon and Lumbee Indian. I'm corresponding with members of that family now. But, would very much like to reach other Nichols family members. My mother had psychogenic amnesia, and remembered almost nothing of her childhood, including any clues which might have helped link us to other living family members. We understand that several family members headed north to Michigan about the time of the Spanish American War in Cuba, and my grandmother Dora Bell traveled with them, to marry her cousin Jesse Nichols there Antrim County in 1900. The couple had two children, Emery Jackson Nichols born 1900, and Cecil John Rhodes Nichols, born 1902. We have no record of Emery except for his birthdate - he was not a member of the family by 1910. Rumors were that he died as a child in a household fire. Cecil was still with his mother when she re-married 1906 in Kanawha County, WV to E. E. PETERS and the family settled in central Washington state in late 1908. Cecil, who died in the 1960's, had always believed he was born in Jackson, Ohio - he never could get a birth certificate - but we've learned just recently that it may have been Jackson, MIchigan or Jackson, Kentucky. We know that Dora's mother, Maggie BROWN divorced Riley Nichols in Greenup and a year later, married Hiram or Henry MOORE - it appears the couple had three daughters by the time of their marriage - Maud, Nancy and Dovie May Moore. There are so many mysteries about this family, and of those few living relatives I've been able to locate, most are very unwilling to share what they know about the family. My mother, Virginia Lee PETERS (1911 - 1998), was unable to tell us anything more, and she passed away earlier this month, of acute myelogenous leukemia. Somehow, during the last few days of her life, she managed to get out of her bed and destroy what few mementos she had left of her family. She spent her entire life trying to keep her background a secret to the rest of the world, and apparently she wasn't the only one in her family. I believe that much of the secrecy and lack of communication in our family may be caused by fears of exposure of this Melungeon ancestry, but in the last few years, many researchers are bringing the whole history of the Melungeon people out into the open and those of us who are finally learning our true roots are very proud of the place the Melungeon people have in our earliest American History. It's time the rest of the world knew about this fascinating aspect of American history. I have been the editor and publisher of Nichols Nostalgia Quarterly. For a variety of reasons, the quarterly has not been published for this last year, but I'm hoping to get going again and would be delighted to hear from any NICHOLS, NICKELL, NICKLE, etc. family members, whether in my line or the other lines in the eastern Kentucky area. Anna, Once you access the automated query page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwqury/ky/greenup/index.cgi You will see four links/selections under the heading of Greenup Co. Ky Query Forum. Choose the link that says "Post a New Message". This link will skip down the page to the "Post a New Message" section. You should now see three or four input boxes (depending on how big your screen is). These boxes are labeled Your Name, E-Mail Address, Surnames and Message. Fill out all the fields and then scroll down until you see a button labeled "Post Message". Click the button with your mouse and the query will be processed. Wait until you see the screen message that says that your query has been added before you go to another page. That should do the trick! :-) Thank you! Thank you, Darrell! But I couldn't find a way to post a query. I didn't find that option, just read a query. Please explain. Thanks, Anna BERTRAM <fbertram@hotcom.net>
Greenup County researchers, This email is to notify you of the recent addition of an automated query system via the Greenup County KyGenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygreenu Connect to our Web site and read the "What's New" section about the automated queries. Queries posted after 01 Jan 1998 are included on this new system. Queries posted prior to 01 Jan 1998 will be archived by year and then by month on our primary Greenup County site. This new system is really impressive. In a nutshell you may: * Post an instant query - (allows users to post the query via a simple Web form. Once the query is submitted, it is automatically updated on the primary query page! -- No more waiting two or three days for Darrell to add them by hand! Yeah! (I like this feature! Ha!) * Notification List - (you can enter your email address at the bottom of the automated query page and the site will automatically notify you via email whenever an update is posted to the site! OR if you don't want a lot of email (in case folks start posting a lot of queries) you can setup the program so that it only notifies you when someone responds to a query that you've posted to the system!) * Archive Search - (The site lists the first 100 queries or the current month's queries on the primary page. You may use a simple search tool to locate queries that were posted and are no longer present on the primary query screen). Remember though that queries posted prior to 01 Jan 1998 are not part of this system, but are archived on the Greenup main site! * Customize your view - (To be honest I haven't tried this section yet. Ha! I've been busy using the administrative tools to get everything ready) I converted all the queries submitted in 1998 to this new system so that we will have complete automation in 98'! Let me know what you think ... problems, comments, suggestions, etc. Thanks, Darrell -- Darrell L.
