Greenup County Researchers, Hello everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself I wanted to let you know how thrilled I am to be the new listowner for the Greenup County Discussion List and Greenup Co KyGenWeb Coordinator. First, I want to thank Darrell Smith for work he has done, to help the researchers in Greenup Co. KY. I addition to this list, he has done a *wonderful* job of creating and maintaining the Greenup Co KyGenWeb webpage. I hope I can do justice to his prior work. He has graciously volunteered help me in the changeover(I will take him up on that!). I'm sure you will want to join me, in extending a *huge* thanks to Darrell. Darrel will still be in the background researching and submitted info. Darrell, I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors!! I am researching in Greenup Co. myself, for my husbands line. I live across the Ohio river from Greenup Co. I have found that the families tended to migrate, back and forth across the river. I found this out, on a family line that lived in Greenup Co. and married in Lawrence Co. OH., then lived afterwards in Greenup Co.. I'm still looking for the brides family, on both sides of the river. Please feel free to drop me a note with help, suggestions, tips and problems. Info is always greatly wanted, needed and appreciated. I am a firm believer in sharing info, for the greater benefit of all researchers. Unfortunely, there are those that have to mess up the system. Therefore, I have this, and all the other lists that I maintain, closed. This is to cut down on the spam and those that are looking for addresses for spam. This means that to sub and unsub, the request comes to me, to be submitted manually. This is more work for me, but *spam* is a real pet peeve of mine and I do not mind the extra step. In the last week there was a spammer that hit the lists, but did not make it to my lists. Rootsweb has resently added a anti-spam program to the server that is helping to cut down on this. The closed list will also block non-subscribers from reviewing our archives to gather addresses. If anyone has a problem submitting a queary. Please contact me at chipmunk@zoomnet.net I will do my best to help with any problem. This great info exchange on the internet has taken us lightyears ahead in genealogy (I remember doing mass mailings in Greenup Co., just four years ago! O.K. I was desparate!!!). ;-D I hope we all make great progress with our research. Bye for now and good luck!! **************************************************************************** ******* Betty Lou Riley () chipmunk@zoomnet.net ~{_)/ Ports.,Scioto Co., OH `` List Owner OHADAMS-L, KYGreenu-L and McGOVNEY-L *Check out my Web site (Riley's Camp) at: http://www.zoomnet.net/~chipmunk/ *Look in the Forest for my Family trees.*

I'm looking for any information on the CARNER family that lived in Russell, Greenup Co. Alonzo Carner (b. 1858 in OH) and Nellie (or Ellen Jane) Gray (b. 1859 in Hamden, OH) had a daughter named Elona (my grandmother), who was born in Russell March 27, 1882. Alonzo's father Anthony was a riverboat captain and farmer who owned a landing on the Kentucky side of the river. Alonzo clerked on the boat (Steamer Victor No.2). Anthony was married to a woman named Henrietta (last name unknown). Their children were Alice, Alonzo, Nellie, Calvin H., Lizzie, and Eva. I am particularly interested in finding out Henrietta's maiden name. Thanks. Karl Carner Voiles
High Betty and John. I checked my Surviving Solders book for Greenup County and didn't find a listing for William. I also looked in my Marriages and the 1850 and 1860 Greenup Census transcriptions and he wasn't there either. I don't think this is a Greenup couple. John, are you aware that they have a Military Archive in Frankfort and that my web page has an application for records there. I sent the request for 17 ancestors and received 12 replies from them. They will respond to walk ins, telephone and faxed requests. I have the information and phone numbers on my web page. Welcome to the Greenup KYGENWEB Greenup site Betty. I am Paul Howard and I have a lot of genealogy research material at home. Greenup County Researchers, Good afternoon. It's been nearly a month since my last post to this group, so I wanted to send an update. Due to additional responsibilities in my full time work postion as well as recent growth in my part time business, I must regretfully step down as coordinator for the Greenup County KyGenWeb. Fortunately, Betty Lou Riley has agreed to take over the position as coordinator for the Greenup Co KyGenWeb and it's associated resources. The Web site currently reflects my name and email address for contacts. However, this information (along with several updates and requests that I've received over the past few weeks) will be updated shortly. Betty will now be responsible for our primary resources. These include * A discussion list * A primary Web site * An automated query system * An automated obituary system * A records/database archival site As you can see there are several resources that make up the Web site, so I would like to encourage everyone to pitch in and help Betty whenever possible. I will stay onboard as a lookup volunteer and will try to provide data from time-to-time for the Databases section. I would also like to encourage others to send in old records and database-style information to add to the sites information repository and to it's success. It's been a lot of fun working with you guys and I appreciate the assistance offered by so many that are members of this list. I will continue to be a member of this list, so feel free to drop me a note whenever you like. In close, I would like for everyone to extend a warm welcome to Betty Lou Riley, Greenup Co KyGenWeb Coordinator! Congratulations Betty! Thank you, Darrell Smith dsmith@mis.net P.S. I'm sad to announce that Bertha Anna Williams Savage, 92, of Greenup County, KY passed away on 05 May 1998. Bertha was a wonderful genealogist and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Cochran Savage. Together they published many of our valuable genealogy resources in Greenup County including * We are the Savages * The City of Wurtland Kentucky * Greenup County Kentucky Cemeteries -- Darrell Smith dsmith@mis.net

Hello from Oklahoma Can anyone on the list help me with my Barkelow family? I know so little, but suspect so much. I know that Ira Hitchcock married Eliza Barkelow 1806 Wood Co. WV. By 1810 they had floated on down to Scioto Co. OH. A Johnson or John Barkelow was also there in 1810. By 1820 the Widow Ruth Barkelow was in Greenup Co. I need to know for sure that Eliza was a daughter of John and Ruth. Ruth was Ruth Stout before marriage. If not, who were Eliza's parents? Does anyone have info on these Barkelows? These was a group of Barkelows in Mason Co. as well. Do these Barkelows connect with those in Greenup and Scioto? Any help appreciated. Monty Olsen mrolsen@cherokeetel.com
Hello from Oklahoma Can any further my knowledge of the Hitchcock families who lived in Greenup Co. early? I believe my gggrandfather, Oliver Perry Hitchcock, was born Greenup Co. about 1815. He was the son of Ira Hitchcock who was in Scioto Co. OH in 1810. At some point Ira and borther Caleb seems to have moved to Greenup before Ira moved on to Johnson Co. IL by 1830's. Any info appreciated. Hello, I've been working on putting together an updated version of the book STEER GENEALOGY (Some Genealogy of a Steer Family) by Isaac S. Russell since about 1988. I've recently discovered these Listserves for genealogy in various counties so I thought I'd take a shot at this in order to collect more data for my Steer Genealogy records. Here's a brief account of the beginnings of the family: Isaac Steer married Ruth Mercer. They came from Ireland to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with their daughter Katherine. Three sons: Nicholas, John & Joseph preceeded them to this country. The family was affiliated with The Society of Friends (Quakers) where many continued for generations to be members. The family eventually migrated down into Virginia settling primarily in Frederick & Loudoun Counties from which descendants spread to other areas in this country. Isaac Russell's book was printed back in 1891 so as you can see much has happened since then. His book primarily dealt with the descendants of Joseph (Isaac & Ruth's son). I am trying to gather info. on ALL of the descendants of Isaac and Ruth Steer, or at least as much as I am able to collect. Being that the family is predominantly Quaker finding accurate info. hasn't been too difficult. I have access to the books written by William Wade Hinshaw which I am using now to further add to the Steer Family records but again much has happened since Hinshaw published his Quaker records. This family has branched out into many different surnames as well, all which can be traced back to Isaac and Ruth Steer. Some of the more common surnames found in this family are: JACKSON, ROBINSON, BROWN, SEXTON, HOLLINGSWORTH, FENTON, DEAN, KIRK, CLEVENGER, WHITACRE, WALKER, PARKINS, MAHANEY, MARKER, SWAYNE, POPE, HOUGH, GRIFFITH, LYTLE (or LITLER), RICHIE, WICKERSHAM, WOOD, RUSSELL, NEVITT. If you believe you are a descendant of Isaac and Ruth Steer I would like to hear from you. Could you please send me whatever complete info. you can give me on your branch of the family up to today's times plus what you know on collateral branches in your line. I need full names of individuals, birth & death dates, places of birth & death, marriage dates and places, spouses full names with birth, death dates and places as well and also the names of the spouses' parents with the mother's maiden name and the same for each child descending from the couple. If you don't have the complete info. I requested, that's ok, just give me what you can. If you wish you can include some biography about some of the individuals. Whatever information you can give me will be greatly appreciated as I try to put together the most up to date version of this genealogy as possible. You can either send this to me by either e-mail at this address steer_family@hotmail.com or you can mail it to me at this address if you don't have an e-mail provider: Michael L. McKay 115 Morgan St. Winchester, VA 22601-3829 Thank you for your attention to this. I'll reprint this letter at various intervals in order for new listserve subscribers to read.
