Betty, Big Sandy is an unincorporated city near present day Lawrence Co., KY and Boyd Co. KY line. Boyd Co. was formed from Greenup Co., so my guess is the in 1755, Big Sandy was a part of Greenup Co. In addition, there is a Rowe family in Lawrence Co. OH., Perry Township, Deering. My grandfather, John Robert Rowe was one of them. This could be the connection. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to write back. Ofcourse I will share any info that may be useful to you. Now here is one for you. John Robert Rowe was married to Olive ?. They had one child, Evelyn. When Olive died, John married Anna Maddy, my grandmother. I would like to know Olive's maiden name. Thanks, Suzanne ---------- > From: Betty Lou Riley <chipmunk@zoomnet.net> > To: KYGREENU-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [KYGREENU-L] GREENUP GENWEB QUESTION > Date: Saturday, June 20, 1998 5:38 PM > > Hoping you can shed some light on an odd one. Not sure if it's the right Rowe Creek but theses is a Rowe Creek in Lawrence Co., Ky.. Directions, from Ashland go South on US 23 to the Lawrence and Boyd Co. Line. Continue South on 23 about 2 miles to the mouth of Rowe Cr., where it empties into the Big Sandy River. kt Betty Lou Riley wrote: > Hoping you can shed some light on an odd one. Hoping you can shed some light on an odd one. This is from the 2/24/1870 issue of the Ironton (OH) Register: A correspondent writes us from Big Sandy (KY) that John Bryan, living near the mouth of Rowe Creek, was born in 1755, which makes him 115 years old. The old gentleman can neither see nor walk, and can hear only a little. He was born at some fort in Maryland, and went into the Revolutionary War under Capt. Lee Morgan. First of all, would this be in Greenup County? I have tried to find the location, and can find little but a few references to Greenup. In the 1811 Census, there are listed a John and Zephaniah Bryan. I am descended from a family of Bryans that went from Maryland to Ohio around 1795. It just struck me as odd that there would be a note about this man in this Ohio paper if there was not some sort of connection (like him being an uncle or cousin) of someone local. Does Greenup have a "Big Sandy" that would be near the mouth of "Rowe Creek?" ************************************************************************* Betty Lou Riley () chipmunk@zoomnet.net ~{_)/ Ports.,Scioto Co., OH `` List Owner OHADAMS-L, KYGreenu-L, Crockett-L and McGOVNEY-L *Check out my Web site (Riley's Camp) at: http://www.zoomnet.net/~chipmunk/ *Look in the Forest for my Family trees.*

I also think I saw that in some record at the State Library (OH) -- of course that was back when I was too dumb to write down references. Hi again, I forgot to mention this in my note about the genealogy scam from "The New World Book of ____". This particular junk mail comes with a postage-paid envelope. This is a golden opportunity to strike back at an unscrupulous company. Companies that use post-paid services only pay for used envelopes. If you don't reply, they don't get charged the postage. In order to claim a small victory for the victimized, I would recommend that you drop the envelope in the nearest mailbox, empty or with a 'nastygram' inside, or maybe even attach it to a small package full of your other junk mail. It makes some work for the post office, and I apologize to any of our overworked postal friends out there, but it gives you an opportunity to strike back and gives an inordinate feeling of satisfaction. Have a great week. Karl

Denise Jacob URBAN saloon owner in Greenup was the subject of my letter. Need info about his parents and time of immigration Thanks Charlie
Subject is buried in the Ashland KY Cemetery. I believe him to be my great great uncle who probably came to America in the 1840's with my great great grandfather. Jacob ran a saloon in East Greenup, KY. I need to learn what ship he came on, when he arrived from Nassau Germany, and any other info that would help me find the name of my gggrandfather. This one is called "The New World Book of (insert your surname)". I had to read throught the literature three times to find all the hidden flaws, but what this piece of literary junk boils down to is a phonebook for people with your surname and a lot of generic information that you could find for free in your library or on the net. While they have a disclaimer that states that "no genealogical connection to your family or to your ancestry is implied or intended", I feel that it is clearly implied in the message and shamefully plays on the emotions of people who would like to know more about their familys but are not familiar enough with genealogy research to realize that a book like this will not help them. The cost of this thing is $39.95 ("A $20 dollar savings!"), which is a lot of Net time. > >Anyway, I sent them back a rather pointed letter in which I told them I would contact my list subscriptions to alert them to the scam, which I have now done. I would urge anyone else receiving this material to do the same. The funny part about the brochure was that they listed 17 countries they supposedly researched on my wife's last name--none of which were the ethnic origin of her name, which is solidly Polish. Cheers to all. Karl Voiles
Hi Mary, "Butt right in!!!" My mom's brothers and sisters didn't know they were related to the other Sizemore's in Greenup. I've kind of helped them with that lately. Although right now I don't have a Shirley in my files. Who were her parents? And WHO are your Andersons. I am nuts to find out who Sarah "Sally" Anderson's parents are. She was married to George GoldenHawk Sizemore and she was born around 1790. Sherry
