    3. HI All, I must regretfully say that I do not own the books, Smoke in The Woods, Vol 1 & 2, however, if we can figure out where to get them from , I will own them. If anyone has access to a Morehead phone book see if you can find a number for : Ered Brown Jr. or Crows Nest Productions. He is supposed to be located on main street in Morehead. The info I shared was just from a few sheets I copied , from the LDS Church, for my own personal use. I was over there yesterday and looked through the entire books. They have LOTS of info from, Bath, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Lewis, Menifee, Morgan and Rowan. , 1890 Census of Civil War Vets and Widows, for Menifee ad Rowan...This is just in Vol1 I am sure Vol 2 covers the same area. Cemetaries, Trial Notes, newspaper articles, etc. If anyone can come up with this number, please post, as many are needing it.

    3. My impression is that the nation-wide epidemic was roughly 1910-1914, with a peak in 1911-12. It varied from region to region. There were quite a few other years that influenza hit hard, but the outbreaks were more localized. It was the outbreaks in the larger cities that really made the headlines. The current 'flu' vaccines are helpful, but once in a while, a new strain emerges. Partly because some of the diseases, like polio and smallpox have become extremely rare, some parents aren't getting their children immunized. Most younger doctors have never seen a patient with polio - and a few cases have been recorded recently. 3. Until vaccines were developed, there were several highly-contagious diseases that could be fatal to otherwise healthy children. Measles, influenza, whooping cough (pertussis), tetanus (lockjaw) and diptheria were difficult to treat effectively. Lack of refrigeration meant children often drank unpasteurized milk - fresh from the source. Likewise, fresh eggs often carried salmonella. Add to those, drinking water from shallow wells and streams and the lack of plumbing. Essentially, healthy children either developed some immunity early in life or they died. Adults died early as well. My maternal grandmother died when my mother was about 6 but several of her siblings lived long lives, including her oldest sister who lived to 101. Accidents that most people would survive today, were fatal when the only transportation was horse and buggy - or for some in the early 1900's Model T's. 3. This came to me from Larry Mocabee, mcaboy@digisys.net Hello again The books were published by Crows Nest Production, Fred Brown, Jr. His home address was Rt 2, Box 510, Morehead, Ky 40351. When I was there three years+ ago, his print shop was on main strret in Morehead. He was talking at that time about republishing the books but I haven't heard anything more. I'd like to have #1. There is another book, out of print I believe, by Juanita Blair called DAY OF ANGER, during the Martin Tolliver Feuds which is a GREAT book. I'm sure it was published at the same place. She gave me a copy of it when I was there, copied it and sent it back to her. A lot on Rowan Co and surrounding area.

    3. Taken from my notes I copied from the book, Smoke in the Woods. CARTER CO following article condensed from pages of Ashland Daily Independent, page 2,Nov 10, 1881 Intense Excitement reigned in Grayson on Wednesday of the second instance because of a bloody shooting between, Steve STAMPER, Milton FOSTER, and Bruce ALFREY, all Rowan Co Residents. A dispute arose over the correctness of statements madeunder oath in a trial of moonshinners before the U.S. Commissioner Bowling. ALFREY called STAMPER a liar; STAMPER drew a revolver and fired on ALFREY, hitting him in the hand. FOSTER started to run, STAMPER shot him, the ball taking effect between the elbow and shoulder in the miscles of FOSTERS left arm. STAMPER started to run, FOSTER and ALFREY fired on him at the same time. FOSTER missed but the ball from ALFREYS .32 cal. revolver struck STAMPER between his tenth and eleventh rib, passing through his body and out below the lower end of his breast bone. STAMPER is recovering in the Grayson Hotel. Dr Louis PRICHARD is in attendance. FOSTER was before the court for illicit distilling Nov 17, 1881, pg 2, Bruce ALFREY was tried in Grayson last Thursday. All charges gainst him were dismissed because of insufficient proof.
