Hi gang, Just returned from an interesting trip to greenup county in search of my Walker Family down there and I happened to be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Siloam and there were a lot of Roarkes and O'Roarkes in there. Some of these grave sites were very old (Early 1800's). I personally have a 1st cousin with the last name Ruarke who was born out of wedlock to a Grace Walker King. Also coincidentally I visited with one of my father's best childhood friends from around Greenup County in a small town in Ohio with the last name Roarke. This gentleman was in his late seventies. Sorry none of these are on the net. Just thought you might be interested. Bill Walker
Lee, Yes, there are Ruark families that I know from Sciotoville, but I don't know anything about there genealogy and I don't know if they are interested. Genealogically speaking you should check Lewis Co., KY for Ruark or Rook families. I know there were some located there. Bruce Bruce E. Valerie, when I was a small child circa1950, my g'ma called us rook also ( pronunciation) dad told me that he remembered being called O'Rourke, but when he entered the service for WW 1 the preacher spelled it Ruark. I have some data from my step sister, but the name book never came up. let me know if I can help, my grandfather Thomas Ruark was killed at pond run, I think about 1912-- I'm not sure never could get his death certificate-- it was a horse trader who shot him in his front yard-- rode away -- never was punished as far as I know. according to my dad. Lee Ruark, I saw your posting about Ruark. This name popped up in my genealogical work. My William Book evidently used the name Ruark at some point in his life. We are pretty sure that William Ruark and William Book were one in the same as the children's names and ages plus the wife listed as Julia Scott in both situations. This would have been around 1854 when a Jacob Ruark was born Sept. 10, 1854 to William Ruark and Julia Scott. Previously William and Julia were under the name Book with older child Mary. They disappeared til I found the Ruark listing. Then that one vanished and reappeared in Greenup Co. as Book again. If this makes sense to you let me know. I have never made progress with William Book. He was my ggggrandfather. Valerie Book Johnson Lee Ruark wrote: > > Bruce > Do you know of any 'Ruark' families in your area? Laverne, Thank you, Im going to try to talk my husband into going there soon. His father (James Roy Gipson) just died in Carter Co.Ky, so he has no more ties there in the area. Hope to go soon! Lynda
Danna, YES, my husbands grandfather was ALEXANDER GIPSON. He died in 1913 ( I have his death certificate) and is buried in Keyhoe Cemetery. On the death cert it says Cooper Cemetery, but I found out later the name has been changed to Keyhoe. His son Alonzo Gipson married Lucy Lawhun in 1906 in Greenup Co. Lynda
When I went to the County Courthouse some years ago they closed at noon I believe on Wednesdays, so you might want to check the day you go to see whether you'd have the whole day to do research (if that is what you need?) I also found the ladies in the library most helpful and for a tiny library it had a mountain of genealogical items. Laverne
Lynda, The people at the libray in Greenup are great. They are very helpful and there are quite a bit of genealogical material in the library. If you go to the court house most of the people there are rather helpfull as well. They won't help you a great deal, but they will let you browse the materials. Bruce Bruce E.
