Hello, There is a cemetery behind the Siloam Baptist Church on Rt. 23 in Greenup County. I have been there twice to visit family graves but I am no aware of who maintains the cemetery. I was there last year in April and bought some flowers from the greenhouse north of the cemetery to put on some graves. The cemetery seems to be well kept although some of our gravestones are almost 100 years old and getting hard to read. Last year was the first time I had been there since the 1950's and my Mom could only remember the immediate family graves. If anyone lives close by and knows if they have a record of the people who are buried there could you get me an address I can write to and get a copy. I'm sure some other Jones's, some Felty and Procter cousins, and possibly some Cremeans are buried there but I have no idea where. Thanks, Larry Jones St. Pete. Fl.

Hi Everyone, I am looking for information on Eada Meadows and family from Greenup County, Ky. Eada married Gilbert Penix in 1857. If anyone out there has a Gedcom file on this particular Meadows family or any info at all could you please send it to me. I am looking for the parents of my ggrandmother Elizabeth Meadows. Elizabeth died very young possible in child birth in 1896. Her husband Peter Blevins from Ashe County, NC was listed in a 1900 census of Greenup County living in the home of Gilbert Penix. He was listed as a widowed son in law. His and Elizabeth's children were listed as Gilbert's grandchildren. Gilbert and Eada had several children and named one of them Elizabeth Penix. I don't think Eada would have named two daughters the same first name and different last names. The stories in our family goes that my grandmothers mother Elizabeth Meadows and her father Peter Blevins died when my grandmother was very young. And that her and her brother Roby Blevins were raised by the "Meadows" family I am at a dead end so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Ed Cooper

Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, What were the opportunities for a shoemaker in the 1830's in Greenup County, Kentucky and in Scioto County, Ohio? My guess would be that no shoemaking establishments existed in the Ohio River Valley in that time period, such as the extensive shoemaking concerns in New England. We must keep the Ohio Canal in mind, which linked the Great Lakes with the Ohio River, running from Cleveland Village to Portsmouth, Ohio. The completion of the canal sparked a huge increase in business and manufacturing. Assuming that no factories for shoemaking were in operation until the Liberty, Kentucky plant and later in Portsmouth, Ohio, how would a journeyman shoemaker conduct his trade? I believe a "country shoemaker" would set up in a town and make footwear for the surrounding rural area. If he walked from farm to farm, the shoemaker would repair what shoes the family had, which is the definition of a "cobbler". Rural shoemakers were just one of the assortment of artisans that made up the skills-pool of an agrarian community, along with blacksmiths, carpenters, coopers, teamsters and doctor-pharmacists. The shoemaker John BOYLE, who entered Greenup County, Kentucky from Pennsylvania in the 1830's, most likely fit the category of an independant craftsman, carrying on his trade as well as he could with the local settlers. Hi to the list, I am researching the MILAR family (my grandmother pronounced that "MYLAR"); My gggrandfather, Silas MILAR was born in 1842 (another source says 1841); died July 1, 1904 in Van Wert, Ohio. He was a Civil War Army Private, Company F, 91 Reg., OVI. He married Mahalah MAULT/MOTT of Scioto County, Ohio. My understanding is that the MILARS were from GreenupCounty, Kentucky, and crossed the river to work in the mines/furnances in Scioto. The children from this marriage were: 1. Moses (06 Jul 1867 - 13 Oct 1950); wife Jane; daughter Lucille/maybe 1 other child 2. Melissa (28 Sep 1869 - 2 Jun 1960); husband Thomas David GRIMSHAW (my line) 3. Nora Alice (married James LOWERY); son Armand; may have lived in Florida 4. George W. (may be Washington); I believe had three children; 2 girls and a boy 5. Myrtle (married John NOGGLE); no children; very close to sister Nora 6. Mary Jane, died at 18 years old; buried in Van Wert, Ohio (1883-1901) 7. Sarah (1st husband, Ike NOLL; had 2 sons; I believe after his death, she married again and moved back to Kentucky). My branch of the family (Melissa) homesteaded in Macon County, MO. Anyone who may have information on the MILARS, please contact me. I am especially interested in Silas' parents, siblings and background. Thanks so much, Sharon Prince Parker, Colorado
