Charlie, When I spoke of Southshore being north of Ashland, my intention was to give direction to a traveler. The last time I checked, U.S. 23 ran North and South and therefore, Southshore would be north of Ashland, on U. S. 23. Forgive me for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Ed, The Daily Independent is out of Ashland, KY. ** Here is just a little humor I hope everyone will enjoy! Kentucky's Worst Air Disaster occurred today when a small two-seater Cessna 152 plane crashed into a cemetery early this afternoon in central Kentucky. Search and rescue workers have recovered 326 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the evening. *************************************************************************** MOKYD@aol.com wrote: > You wrote: > In The Daily Independent on Sunday, January 17, 1999, there was a five > generation picture of Verna Penix, son Harold Penix, his son David Penix, > David's daughter Stacey Brown and Stacey's son James Hunter Brown. > > I don't know that this is any interest to you, but having read your > inquiries about Penix surname, I felt it was worth mentioning. > > God Bless, > > Suzanne > Suzanne, is the Daily Independent a newspaper out of Southshore? I am looking for information on the ancestry of SAMUEL LEE HOOD born 21 May 1886 in graham CO. Ky. Married a Cora Stone and a Dora Greenwood. Moved at some time to Hamilton, Ohio, and died there. Thanks in advance for any information. Carol
Dear Researchers of Greenup County, Kentucky, The oldest Greenup County, Kentucky document I have found which includes a COOPER is the 1810 U.S. Census. Charles COOPER was the only Greenup County resident of that surname in 1810, yet Charles COOPER was NOT included in the 1811 census of Greenup County, as listed by Biggs and McCoy on page 39 of their History of Greenup County, Kentucky. In 1810, Charles COOPER was between 26 and 45 years old. There were one male and two females in his household who were under ten years of age, and one female who was between sixteen and twenty-six. My research in Lawrence County, Ohio revealed a Charles COOPER on the tax lists as early as 1818. The Lawrence County, Ohio Charles COOPER was enumerated in the 1820 and 1830 Censuses, and was on the Lawrence County tax lists up to 1834. There were no COOPERs in Lawrence County, Ohio from 1835 through 1837. If this Charles COOPER were a match with the 1810 Greenup County Charles COOPER, then in 1810, Charles COOPER would have been between twenty-six and thirty years old. In Greenup County, Kentucky, 8 Jun 1835, William S. DICKERSON married Mary COOPER. The Bondsman was Harvey COOPER, and consent was given by Mary COOPER's father, Charles COOPER. Another "Charles COOPER" reference: The 1837 Cincinnati, Ohio City Directory contained a "Charles COOPER, Tobacconist" in that year ONLY. In May 1838, "Charles COOPER, Deceased" was mentioned in a Greenup County Apprenticeship document, in which sons Hugh and Granville/Greenville COOPER were bound out to Willis COOPER, to be instructed in the "three r's" and agriculture until they reached the age of 21. Please correct me if I am on the wrong track, but it seems that these documents mentioning Charles COOPER are all referring to the same person. If that is correct, Charles COOPER was living in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1810, in Lawrence County, Ohio 1818 through 1834, and back in Greenup County from 1835 to his death in 1837 or 1838, with possibly a short time in Cincinnati. Charles COOPER would have been born between 1780 and 1784. Can anyone provide more details on Charles COOPER, who seems to hold much promise in the search for William COOPER's parents? Thank you so much. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
Dear Researchers of Greenup County, Kentucky, My research has pointed to a possible link between two counties in South Carolina [York and Laurens] and Greenup County, Kentucky [as well as Scioto County, Ohio]. The surnames involved are COOPER and WILLIAMS. James WILLIAMS of Laurens County, South Carolina wrote his will in 1816, and in the document mentioned that Reubin and Charles COOPER had married two of his daughters. The names Reuben COOPER and Charles COOPER have appeared in the records of Scioto and Lawrence Counties, Ohio and Greenup County, Kentucky. But what increased the likelihood of a connection between SC and OH/KY was Herod COOPER, who lived in Scioto County, Ohio in the 1830's and whose name appeared [only] in South Carolina records, as well. If you have discovered any migrations of families from South Carolina to Greenup County, Kentucky, please contact me, so we can discuss this further. Thank you for your recommendations. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
Dear Paul Howard and Greenup County List, Thank you, Paul, for your response to my query regarding William COOPER, husband of Martha Ann BARNEY. The census entry from Evelyn S. Jackson's transcription of the 1850 Census of Greenup County was helpful, but I do have one correction. William COOPER served in the Union Army's Twenty-second Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Company E. Ms. Jackson's transcription gives "53rd Mounted Infantry" as William COOPER's Regiment. Actually, the 53rd Mounted Infantry was his son Artemas COOPER's Regiment, as well as his son Adoniram's. In addition, Adoniram served in the 45th Mounted Infantry. Thank you again, Paul, for posting the 1850 Greenup County transcription. Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio

Dear Clarence and All Researchers of Greenup County, Kentucky, I, too, am researching the COOPER surname in Greenup County, Kentucky, and neighboring counties. The cause of this "Labor of Love" is my search for the parents of my third-great grandfather William COOPER, who married Martha Ann BARNEY, 6 May 1846, in Liberty [Lynn], Greenup County, Kentucky. Because of my goal of finding William COOPER's parents, I am studying all of the COOPER families for clues. Clarence, concerning your great great grandfather Jonathan COOPER, born 1821, and his wife Charity: Do you know their birthplaces and parents' names? Eli COOPER had a son Jonathan, who I think was born after 1822. After five years of research, I still have not separated the COOPERs of Greenup County into their respective family lines. If we could determine how many COOPER households were represented in Greenup County, we could clarify all of our research. Eli COOPER and his descendants were one COOPER line. My third-great grandfather William COOPER, who was first recorded in Greenup County transactions in 1846, was apparently of a separate, unrelated line of COOPERs. William COOPER was [supposedly] born about 1822 in Massachusetts or Connecticut. How about your COOPERs? Thanks! Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
