Linda, Charlie had the "between Grayson and Greenup" right on the Oldtown, but the route # is 1. Oldtown is not really in the same location as Warnock route 7. If you were to follow route 1 out of Greenup to Grayson, you would go through Oldtown. As for the Hunnell, there is an area Hunnewell named after John Hunnewell who was into iron ore mining in the 1800's in Greenup Co. There is no town now called by that name, but it is an old area that had an iron ore furnace. Hunnewell is located along the East Fork River and is near Naples. Naples is actually listed as Boyd Co., but is right on the county line. Hunnewell is near route # and Old town. My ancestors are from that area. Dear Researchers of Greenup County, Kentucky, I have found the information on Sebastian EIFORT that I referred to in my last post, in Evans's 1903 "History of Scioto County, Ohio", instead of in the Greenup County, Kentucky history. The article in Evans has a PORTRAIT of Colonel EIFORT, as well! He sported an "Amish" type beard, and bore quite a solemn expression, which of course most of the subjects of portraits and photographs did back then. It was not customary to smile for pictures in those days. I will post the information tomorrow, since, regretfully, I have run out of time to do it today. Randal W. Carol, This may not help you but I grew up in the Sciotoville area and a friend of the family was William "Bill" Basham. His wife's name was Ginnie and he had a daughter named Judy and a son named Billy. He worked for Borden's and delivered milk door to door. I'm sure he died sometime ago but Ginnie and the kids might still be in the area. Judy would be about 50 now and Billy would be in his mid 40's. You didn't mention if you live in the area or if you were familiar with the area but when I lived there I knew almost every kid in town. Some of my cousins still live in the area and might know of the location of the Basham's if you think it might help. Let me know and I would be happy to get in touch with my cousin on your behalf. Good luck, Larry Jones Florida -----Original Message----- From: Doc Mintz <mydwyfe@sonic.net> To: KYGREENU-L@rootsweb.com <KYGREENU-L@rootsweb.com> Date: March 01, 1999 12:45 PM Subject: [KYGREENU-L] look up >Dear folks, would those of you who seem to have printed histories of the >Sciotoville area be willing to look for the name BASHAM. From: CARTER COUNTY, a pictorial history, by George Wolfford Page 21: Whigs who shaped public sentiment in 1861 were W. H. JACOBS, J. B. WARD, Gabriel SCOTT, John R. STROTHER, E.P, DAVIS, Elihu BOGGS, Andrew BIGGS, R.W. LAMPTON, and Sebastian EIFORT. Page 21: In 1860 Sebastian EIFORT ran a store in connection with operation of Boone Furnace. He sold to John T. RATCLIFF personal items. Page 26: In April 1861, with the echo of Sumter's shots in his ear, ardent unionist Sebastian EIFORT, one of the owners of Boone Furnace, called a meeting there with George M. Thomas, later to be congressman, as speaker. The flag was raised, patriotism expounded, and a plan drawn for attracting troops for a Home Guard. The furnacemen, in the main from Pennsylvania and Ohio, were sworn in by Col. EIFORT. But home service wasn't enough for his son, William Henry. The boy, named for a grandfather who served under Napoleon, typified the gallant knight of the era. Espousing Unionism, "with two or three friends he attempted to raise volunteers for the Army. It was a perilous undertaking. They found neutrality meant war upon who should dare to rally men to fight the old South on the soil of Kentucky. Their lives were threatened, and they were targets for rifle and revolver as they rode through the country. But EIFORT was one of those brave spirits who seem insensible to fear; danger only roused him to his best. He and a friend raised a company, of which on its organization, he was chosen First Lieutenant and his friend, Henry G. THOMAS, was made Captain. At this time Lt. EIFORT was 18 years of age." "The company dared not camp on neutral soil but crossed to Indiana to Camp Joe Holt where they mustered into United States service in July 1861, first as infantry, changing to Second Kentucky Cavalry." Gerri Everman Anderson gander@scia,net 900 Jenifer St. Wildwood, Fl. 34785-5509 -
Because the EIFORT question raised so much interest, I will quote, in the entirety, what is listed in the Supplement to History of Greenup County Kentucky. It starts on page 98 of the Supplement: "Col. Sebastian Eifort was born near Frankfort, Germany in 1817. He came with his parents to America in 1832. They settled at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He went to Jackson, OH in 1836, and was later connected with the iron furnance there. He married Rachel, daughter of William and Rachel Tomlinson Jackson. He became manager of Bloom Furnace in Scioto County and helped to build and operate Harrison Furnace. In 1885, Sebastian Eifort and his family moved to Kentucky. He bought land in Carter County and helped build Boone Furnace, which was operated later under the name of Eifort, Bennett and Company. In 1869, he sold his interest in Boone Furnace and became manager of Hunnewell Furnace, where he remained for thirteen years. He retired to his home on Main Street, in Greenup, where he died in 1893. On March 17, 1892, Col. Eifort and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Greenup. An interesting incident was that Aunt Evaline Jackson (colored) who had prepared the wedding supper for Mamie, the younger daughter, twenty-two years before, was the presiding cook at the anniversary celebration for the parents. Col. and Mrs. Eifort were the parents of nine children, William Henry, James M., Kate, Mary Jane, Fabian S., Joseph B., Warren, Charles and Oscar. William Henry served in the Civil War with ranks of captain, major, and lieutenant colonel. He was killed at Tricene, Tennessee, in 1864, and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery at Portsmouth, Ohio. Kate married John Warnock, agent for Boone Furnace and later mail agent for E.K.R.R. Mr. Warnock died but the family, Myra, Annie, Ray and Henry, lived in Greenup for many years. Annie married Nathaniel Callon and Ray married Nellie Scott before the family moved to California. The second daughter of Col. and Mrs. Eifort, Mary Jane (Mamie), married Charles Hertel, a merchant of Greenup. They were the parents of Laura Baldwin of St. Albans, W. Va., Nora who married Robert L. Wilson, Rachel, who married Marvin Miller, William E. (Brownie), and Clifford, who married Martha Crawford and lived at Hinton, W. Va. Fabian married Margaret Alexander and was in business with his father at Hunnewell Furnace, living for some time in the Eifort home at Greenup. Children of the family were Nell, Henry E., Louis C., Ina and Hazel. The family moved to Ashland, where members of the family are still living. Joseph married Agnes Radspinner. They moved to North Carolina." The above is the entire reference in the Supplement. Dan
There was a brick factory in the 2000 blk of 7th street in Portsmouth, Ohio. I think that they just tore it down in the past couple of years. It was real old I would guess early 1900's maybe even before. I can remember as a kid, people saying that it had been there for ever. I'am 49 now. Bob McFarland
Does anyone have a John Wesley Cooper who married Mary Watkins estimated birhts are 1850-1860. Thanks, Ed
Dear folks, would those of you who seem to have printed histories of the Sciotoville area be willing to look for the name BASHAM. I have a listing in the "Iron and Steel in Scioto County" book for a 'Col. Sebastian Eifert' He built the Harrison Furnace in 1853. He worked at Jackson Ohio and Bloom furnaces beginning in 1839 and was the foundryman and manager of the Bloom furnace during 1842. The company was known as the Harrison Furnace Co. After operating it for two years, he sold it to Samuel McConnell and Daniel Sommers and went to Carter Co., Ky where he built the Boone Furnace and became manager. After he returned from the Civil War he sold his intrest in the Boone Furnace (1866) and became the manager of the Hunnewell Furnace located in Greenup Ky. until 1870. Is this any relation to who you are looking for? I saw the reference to the furnaces and thought I would look in the book to see if he might be mentioned. -----Original Message----- From: RUTH J WHITE <RUTHJAN@prodigy.net> To: KYGREENU-L@rootsweb.com <KYGREENU-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, March 01, 1999 11:27 AM Subject: Re: [KYGREENU-L] EIFORT >I would be interested also > >thank you > >-----Original Message----- >From: danteonline <danteonline@email.msn.com> >To: KYGREENU-L@rootsweb.com <KYGREENU-L@rootsweb.com> >Date: Monday, March 01, 1999 9:19 AM >Subject: [KYGREENU-L] EIFORT > > >> >>In Reply to Carol >> >>There are two full pages in the Supplement to the History of Greenup County >>Kentucky on pg. 98. Dear Researchers of Greenup County, Kentucky, Especially Carol, According to Biggs and McCoy, the surnames associated with the early years of Hunnewell were: EIFORT, CONWAY, WEAVER, CAMPBELL, GILLIAM [GILLUM?], ELAM and WHITTINGTON. List Member Carol asked if Sebastian EIFORT were mentioned in connection with Hunnewell. The passage on Hunnewell on page 107 mentions only the surname EIFORT, but the "History of Greenup County" DOES speak of Sebastian EIFORT. I just can't remember where in the book. Can anyone help locate the Sebastian EIFORT information in said book? Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio
In Reply to Carol There are two full pages in the Supplement to the History of Greenup County Kentucky on pg. 98. These pages deal with Col. Sebastian EIFORT born near Frankfort, Germany in 1817, he came here with his parents in 1832 and they settled in Lancastle, PA. They relocated to Jackson, OH in 1836 and he worked with the iron furnances there. The story continues. Also, on pg. 296 of the original book it mentions Kate EIFORT who married John Tug. If Carol will contact me I will see what I can do about copying those pages. Dan Craycraft danteonline@msn.com
My Grandparents Andy and Lona BLEVINS lived on Coal Branch near Hunnewell for many years. I stayed with them for two or three summers when my motherwas going to college at Morehead (late 1950's). My Uncle and I often walked up to the store at Hunnewell to spend the quarter my mom sent me each week. It was a great time. I suggest the reason well was added to Hunnell was the well water. The area along Coal Branch and up down to Hunnewell including Cane Creek had some of the coldest sweetest wells in the area before stripmining ruined some of them. I remember that there was still a well next to the old store as recentlyas the mid to late '60's, though it was coveredup.
For Randall and Carol, SEBASTIAN EIFORT is foumd with his family in the l880 census of Greenup Co. EIFORT, SEBASTIAN 60, b. Germ. " RACHEL, 59, b Ohio, parents b PA " JOSEPH B. b Ohio WARNOCK, KATE, 33 dau, b Ohio " MYRA " ANNIE " HENRY " RAY M. SEBASTAN'S WIFE, RACHEL,was nee, RACHEL JACKSON, the d/o WILLIAM & RACHEL JACKSON. KATE WARNOCK appears to be Sebastian's daughter who was living with them with her chldren...I did not take down ages of these children but can add them if you want. The l860 censs of Greenup shows a JOHN EIFORT, 33, born Germany. Do you want the informaton from this census too? Hope this is what you have been looking for. Helen
