    1. [KYGREENU-L] Rucker's[?] Branch Location in Greenup Co KY, 1814
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers Whose Focus is Greenup County, Kentucky, Where was "RUCKER'S BRANCH" in Greenup County in 1814? I have a photocopy of a Greenup County Deed dated 18 Oct 1814, in which Abraham BUFORD sold one hundred acres to William DOUGLASS for a thousand dollars. The description of the boundaries of the tract of land began "on the bank of the Ohio" and included "at the mouth of Rucker's Branch" as one of the locator points. The handwriting is difficult to read, so "Rucker's" could possibly be something else. Locating this hundred acres on the Ohio River in Greenup County will help in my study of William DOUGLASS. Thank You, Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio

    1. [KYGREENU-L] correction to Frazee post
    2. James Waddell
    3. Hello I hate to be incorrect about a date, and so this is a correction to my earlier "Frazee" post. I had written that Sara (Frazee) Smith and Sylvester Smith had deeded their farm to my grandmother Emma Jane in the early 1900s. I checked my copy of the deed, and it says 1 September 1894. I know that's a small item, but it will bother me for years if I don't correct this post now. Regards, Phyllis

    1. [KYGREENU-L] Frazee
    2. James Waddell
    3. Hello My Grandmother Emma Jane Dixon was raised by Sylvester Smith and Sara Jane (Frazee) Smith on their farm on Robertsons Flat near Kehoe in Greenup. Sara Jane was known in our family as "Mudge." In the early 1900s, Sylvester and Sara deeded their farm to my grandmother. Emma married Jeff Duncan (son of Lawson Wheatley), and with the exception of Robert (the youngest) raised her children on that farm. Sara Jane continued to live with Emma after she married. My grandparents and Sara eventually moved across the river to New Boston; Sara was living with them when she died April 2, 1918. Last year, I was able to come to Kentucky to visit Greenup. My cousin Charles Duncan, Jr. of Portsmouth showed me Robertsons Flat and the land where the farm house had been--torn down now of course. He took me to the Kehoe Cemetery--I've also heard it called the M.E. Cemetery and sometimes the Cooper Cemetery. The cemetery is up the road from where Minnie Cooper Duncan had her store. Anyway, I saw the stones of a number of my family; I guess the one that was most important to me was of my G-grandfather Lawson Wheatley Duncan. Charles told me that Sara Jane was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth. We visited the cemetery and talked with the caretaker. There is no stone, but there was a death record--information given by my Grandfather Jeff. The record showed that Sara's father was Jefferson Frazee and her mother was Hannah Long. I am interested in knowing more about Sara's family. Is there anyone on this list who has information about the Frazee family? I would appreciate knowing about anyone related to his woman. Regards, Phyllis

    1. [KYGREENU-L] Queries that get answered
    2. Betty Lou Riley
    3. Hello List Family Members, To make your query work harder for you... keep in mind the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following as possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790s, late 1800s etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS system: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember ! ! ! ! Many subscribers belong to multiple list servers; therefore, many go through their mail looking at subject fields only. Unfortunately, messages with "My Family", "My Line", "My Grandfather", "My JONES", etc., as subjects are deleted without ever being opened. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update it as necessary. Use it again about once a quarter to touch base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts queries. REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT... 1. [KYGREENU-L] Clues to maiden names
    2. Betty Lou Riley
    3. Nothing will give greater clues to maiden names, than the witnesses to old wills. In the lower left hand corner of most deeds, you will find signatures of two to four witnesses. The first is always from the husband side. The next is almost always from the wife side and that is to protect her one-third dower right under law. Mortgages: In the 1800s and before, it was traditional when the daughter married, as part of her dowry, for the father to either cover their mortgage or carry a note for his son-in-law. If you can find to whom their mortgage payments were made, 70% of the time it will be the bride's father.
