    1. [KyGreenup] Enoch P. Loper's Land Purchase from Furman Harr, 1855,
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Greenup County, Kentucky Researchers, There was only one LOPER in Greenup County Deed Index Number One (1803-1868). He was Enoch P. LOPER, who was a resident of Lawrence County, Ohio, 26 Oct 1855, when he purchased a tract of land for $300 in Greenup County, Kentucky from Furman HARR/HARE. This transaction can be found in Deed Book "M", page 39. The property was located on the west side of the branch that flowed through Horse Hollow, near where Furman HARE/HARR lived. The boundary description began in "the Rock" in Horse Hollow. Does anyone know what "the Rock" in Horse Hollow was? Was it a prominent outcropping of rock, an area of exposed rock in Horse Hollow? Where was "the Rock" in Horse Hollow? I have found Horse Hollow on a map of Greenup County. It appears to flow from the Lewis County line, southeasterly into Big Whiteoak Creek at the community of York. Apparently a road went over the dividing ridge and connected the Truitt/York area of Greenup County to the Lewis County community of Quincy. I think that George W. LOPER lived on this very tract of land in 1860 when he was enumerated in the 1860 Census of Greenup County, and had a Post Office address of Truittsville. I have several reasons for thinking this. First, George LOPER had not purchased land in Greenup County by 1860, yet he did have his own household, having married Rebecca MITCHELL just the year before, in 1859. Second, Enoch P. LOPER did acquire land in Greenup County, being the only LOPER who did so, through 1868. Third, Harmon ALDRIDGE (single in 1860) was boarding in George LOPER's home in 1860, and Elizabeth HARR became Harmon ALDRIDGE's wife. She was a daughter of Furman HARR. Fourth, Enoch P. LOPER is a strong candidate for the father of George LOPER, based on my research of the LOPERs. My third-great grandfather William COOPER, 35, born in Massachusetts, was also boarding in George LOPER's home in 1860. This fact leads me to suspect that the LOPERs may have been associated in some way with the COOPERs. Can anyone help me locate the Enoch LOPER farm more accurately on Horse Hollow? How far from the Lewis County border did George W. Loper live in 1860? Thank you! Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper Surnames Associated with this Query: LOPER, HARR, ALDRIDGE/ALDRICH, THAYER, TRUITT, HACKWORTH, MESSER, HOWLAND

    1. [KyGreenup] C.L. Osburne and his Wife Mary of Greenup County, Kentucky, 1866
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, C.L. Osburne and his wife Mary of Greenup County, Kentucky sold for two hundred dollars a ten-acre tract of land in Lewis County, Kentucky to "Boyle and McKee", namely, Steamboat Captain John Boyle and Henry McKee, with the document dated November 27, 1866. The land was located near the mouth of Briery Creek, which must have been in the village of Quincy, on the Ohio River. The deed is recorded in Book "V", page 155 of the Lewis County, Kentucky Deed Books. The ten-acre tract was next to the 73-acre tract of John G.L. Smith. Was C.L. Osburne Charles Osburne, who married Mary Crossett? Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
