    1. Re: [KyGreenup] Schoolhouse Hollow, Greenup Co Ky: Loper School Nearby?

    3. How can I find out more information about the Colegrove"s. My gg grandmother was Cydna Jane Colegrove (dob1859) from Greenup. I have beed told she was part Indian but can find anything to back it up. What kind of Indian were around Greenup? Also I would like to know what kind of work the Colegrove's did. Thanks for any suggestion Bev from CA [email protected] wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Schoolhouse Hollow contains an intermittent watercourse that flows southward into the north bank of Schultz Creek. To locate Schoolhouse Hollow, begin at the intersection of Routes 784 and 546, about one-half mile east of the Lewis County border, in Greenup County. Proceed eastward on Route 784, which follows Schultz Creek on its north bank. There is a cemetery on the north side of Route 784, at the mouth of Negro Hollow. This cemetery is about one-eighth mile east of the intersection of Routes 784 and 546. Continue east. The next hollow is Polly Hollow. Sugarcamp Creek flows into Polly Hollow and then into Schultz Creek. The next hollow is Schoolhouse Hollow. The distance from the Lewis County border to the mouth of Schoolhouse Hollow is about one and three-fourths miles. Note: Brushy Iron Furnace (what is remaining of it) is four miles directly south of the mouth of Schoolhouse Hollow. Brushy Iron Furnace, built by Samuel Seaton, was originally named New Hampshire Furnace and is located on the north side of Brushy Creek Road, west of the community of Liberty/Lynn. There is a cemetery on the south side of Route 784, about a half-mile east of Schoolhouse Hollow, on the north bank of Schultz Creek. Thus, the cemetery is between Schultz Creek and Route 784. Another half-mile east is Rockhouse Hollow. About one and one-fourth miles further east is the center of the community of Letitia. This map information is derived from the map of Greenup County, Kentucky in ~Kentucky County Map Book~, compiled by C.J. Puetz, County Maps, Puetz Place, Lyndon Station, WI 53944, (608) 666-3331. Loper School might have been at or near the mouth of Schoolhouse Hollow. I do not know. As for the location of Loper Cemetery, it has an "address" of Letitia, Kentucky. Thus, Loper Cemetery could be either of the cemeteries on Route 784 and Schultz Creek west of Letitia Center. The cemeteries are not named on the map. They are indicated by the symbol of a dashed rectangle with a cross inside. Traveling west out of Letitia Center on Route 784, the first cemetery is about one and three-fourths miles away, on the south side of Route 784. The second cemetery is about one and three-fourths miles further west, on the north side of Route 784. I am researching the Lopers. Of particular interest are John Loper (died 1903) and George W. Loper (ca.1836-1889), who might have been brothers. I am searching for their parents. The John and George Loper I am referring to are buried next to each other in Carbon Hill Cemetery, Ward Township, Hocking County, Ohio. George W. Loper was a resident of Greenup County, Kentucky from at least 1859 to about 1865 or so. George W. Loper married Rebecca Mitchell on August 24, 1859 in Greenup County. ==== KYGREENU Mailing List ==== We're proud to be a part of KYGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 1. [KyGreenup] Hardin Household near Letitia, 1876, Schultz Creek, Greenup County, Kentucky
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, A Mr. or Mrs. HARDIN was a landowner on Schultz Creek, Greenup County, Kentucky, at the point where Dry Fork flows into Schultz Creek (unless the fork is dry, of course), according to the 1876 map of Greenup County, Kentucky. The location of the Hardin property was on what is now Route 784 on Schultz Creek, less than a mile north of where the community of Letitia is placed on modern maps. Was this "1876 Hardin" Reverend Fielding Hardin, Methodist minister enumerated in the 1880 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, page 55D, dwellinghouse 225, Globe School House Post Office? Reverend Fielding Hardin was listed as 59 years old in 1880, born in Virginia; with his wife Eliza Jane (Dortch) Spriggs, whom he married on March 15, 1870. The Hardin household at Dry Fork and Schultz Creek was the nearest landowner to what is now called Letitia. I hope that identifying the Hardin household will assist in gaining more information pertaining to the history of the Letitia community. How and when did the community of Letitia get its name? I would like to learn more about Letitia. Thank you for your help! Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper Note: It appears that a resident of Schultz Creek in 1880 could definitely have had a post office address of Globe School House, since the Globe community was only about four miles east of where Letitia is designated today.

    1. [KyGreenup] John War(r)ing (ca.1804-ca.1868): Greenup and Lewis Counties, Kentucky
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, John Waring (ca.1804-ca.1868) was enumerated in the 1840 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, on page 223. In 1840, he was a resident of the Liberty/Lynn community on Tygart Creek. Charles Craycraft, Edward Brooks and John Pratt were three of his close neighbors in 1840. In 1849, John Waring donated land in Liberty, Greenup County, for the building of a Methodist Church. The church was north of the Liberty Christian Church. John Waring/Warring did not stay in Greenup County, as far as his residence. In 1850, he was enumerated in the Census of Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky, District One, dwellinghouse 141. From the 1850 Census, the given name of his wife is revealed: Ursula, age 43, born in Kentucky. John and Ursula had nine children listed in 1850. In 1852, John Waring took the first step toward becoming an iron manufacturer, by purchasing a large tract of land. In 1853, Mr. Waring obtained more land, in Greenup County. In 1856, John Waring's iron furnace, Kenton Furnace, began operations, with John Waring as manager. He was in partnership with others. Kenton Furnace was located in Greenup County, at or near the community of York, on the south bank of Whiteoak Creek, across from the mouth of Horse Hollow. The community of York was originally known as Kenton Furnace. The road that goes through York is now designated Route 2070. In 1860, John Warring was again enumerated in Lewis County, Kentucky, on page 929, dwellinghouse 1219. John Warring was 56 years old, born in Kentucky. By occupation he was a Pig Iron Manufacturer. His property was valued at $65,000/$500. John Waring died about 1868. Kenton Furnace operated until 1882. I think that John Waring is a strong candidate for the employer of George W. Loper, Harmon Aldridge and William Cooper as day laborers in 1860. Note: Kenton Furnace Post Office opened in 1869. This could explain the use of the Truittsville Post Office in 1860, for the residents around Kenton Furnace. The tract of land that Enoch P. Loper purchased in 1855 was in Horse Hollow. I suspect that George W. Loper was living on this land in 1860. If anyone has more information pertaining to John Waring, son of Thomas Truman Greenfield Waring and Nancy Anne Medford, I would be glad to hear from you. What was Ursula's maiden name? Thank you for your help! Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper Acknowledgement of Correction: Researcher Ronald Whitaker was correct. I should have written ~western~ Greenup County, not eastern, in a recent message, referring to the Horse Hollow-Schultz Creek area. Thank you for the correction.
