    1. [KyGreenup] Enterprise Furnace (1826-ca.1833), Tygart Valley, Greenup County
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, Enterprise Iron Furnace was located five miles south of what is now the intersection of U.S. Route 23 and Kentucky Route 1043 (East Tygart Creek Road) in the community of Frost, east of South Shore, Greenup County, Kentucky. This is according to an historical road sign. There is (or is supposed to be) a road sign, Marker 1147, an historical marker, at Routes 23 and 1043 which gives information regarding Enterprise Furnace. To reach the site of Enterprise Furnace, take State Route 1043 south out of Frost (at U.S. Route 23). After about three miles, there is a "Y". Route 1043 veers left and goes on to Edgington and again connects with U.S. Route 23. But instead of continuing on Route 1043, go straight south at the "Y", which is still East Tygart Creek Road. This part of East Tygart Creek Road is actually Route 1215, but is not marked as such. After approximately another two miles, the site of Enterprise Furnace will be reached. I have been told that there is no trace of Enterprise Furnace today. I made a rough measurement on my map to find the point that is five miles south of Route 23 on East Tygart Creek Road. The road meanders so much that it is difficult to measure. I found that Enterprise Furnace must have been located on or very near Craycraft Branch. Craycraft Branch is a small watercourse that flows in a northwesterly direction into Tygart Creek. The point where Craycraft Branch empties into Tygart Creek is north of Bennetts Mills and is about one mile south of where Schultz Creek flows into Tygart Creek. State Marker 1147 gives a brief history of Enterprise Furnace. Enterprise Furnace was built in 1826 (however, Biggs gives 1832). The furnace was built by Richard Deering, James McCoy and Jacob Clingman, on the site of a bloomery forge that had been erected in 1824. Its air blast was operated by water power (necessitating a dam?). Question: Which watercourse supplied the water power for Enterprise Furnace? It had to be either Craycraft Branch or Tygart Creek, with Tygart Creek probably the more likely. Craycraft Branch is not shown on the 1876 map of Greenup County. Enterprise Furnace burned charcoal fuel, producing as much as three tons of iron daily, mostly cast into utensils. Enterprise Furnace was not in blast after 1833. There was an "Enterprise Iron Works" mentioned in a December, 1841 court record of Greenup County. James Greenslate was appointed surveyor of the road from Enterprise Iron Works to the county road at Benjamin Barney's place instead of Rezin Smith. Perhaps the making of cast-iron utensils continued after 1833, using iron from another furnace, such as Globe Furnace. Or, perhaps in 1841 the SITE of Enterprise was referred to, it having ceased operations some eight or nine years earlier. Note: Globe Furnace was built in 1830 by George Wilson Darlington and was not far from Enterprise Furnace. Apparently, then, there was a two-to-three-year period of time when Enterprise Furnace and Globe Furnace were in operation at the same time. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper PS. Route 1215 is apparently that part of East Tygart Creek Road that is south of Route 1043. The southern terminus of East Tygart Creek Road is at Route Seven, near Liberty Cemetery.

    1. [KyGreenup] Allen Cemetery Interments, Horse Hollow, Greenup County
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, In Horse Hollow is a cemetery named Allen Cemetery. Can anyone tell me which Allens are buried there? There are quite a few Allens in the 1850 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky. I am trying to identify the Allens who lived in Horse Hollow. Allen Cemetery is about 1 1/2 miles up Horse Hollow. Continuing past Allen Cemetery, it is about 1.3 miles further to the Lewis County line. The road that follows Horse Hollow past Allen Cemetery, over the ridgetop into Lewis County, then follows Briery Branch down to Quincy on the Ohio River, is Route 2070 in Greenup County and Route 1021 in Lewis County. In addition, if anyone can name any of the residents of Horse Hollow in the 1850s and 1860s, I would be interested to hear from you. I am attempting to locate Furman Harr's and Enoch Loper's land. Thank you for your help! Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

I am putting the finishing touches on the Kentucky Death Certificate CD and it is set to be mailed out by Feb 7, 2004. There is still time to get involved though. If you have Death Certificates with a KENTUCKY connection, born, died or lived any part of their lives in Kentucky and would like to be a part of this project. E-mail your scanned JPEG death certificates to me at [email protected] The cost for the CD is $2.00 per CD (not death certificate) this will cover shipping and handling and the cost of the CD. The only stipulation is that you MUST donate atleast one death certificate to the project. However, the more each of us donate the larger the project will be. As of Feb 1, 2004 I currently have 1,800 death certificates that will be included on the CD. If this project proves to be a success I hope to continue it and put out one CD every six months or until there is no more interest in the Death Certificates. Anyone needing more information please feel free to e-mail me at the above address. And don't forget to drop by Tombstone Central: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~foe3643/ Cassy Sommers

    3. Brenda, Have you ever run into an M. L. Stephenson who married Lucy Bailey, b. about 1890. Her parents were Samuel Thomas and Maggie Helen (Smith) Bailey. M. L. and Lucy (Bailey) Stephenson lived in Portsmouth during the time period 1913 to 1927. They may have lived there before and after those dates, but I do not know that for sure. I submit the following obituary as evidence of this relationship. The Ironton Evening Tribune Ironton, Ohio, Monday, June 27, 1927 Volume 2, Number 179, Page 2 SAMUEL BAILEY DIED SUNDAY Samuel Thomas Bailey, 67, who years ago served as deputy and as sheriff of Greenup County, Ky., died Sunday morning at 10:10 o'clock at his home on Tygart Creek. The greater part of his life was spent on his farm at Lynn, Ky. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. E. E. Pierce, Huntington, W.Va., Mrs. M. L. Stevenson, Portsmouth and Mrs. H. H. Mosley of Virginia. The funeral services will be held by Rev. I. V. Hayes, of Greenup with interment in Riverview cemetery under the direction of the Stapf Undertaking Company. Portsmouth Daily Times, Monday, June 27, 1927 Death Calls Former Greenup Sheriff Greenup, Ky., June 27 - Samuel Thomas Bailey, former sheriff and one of the leading citizens of Greenup county, died at his farm home at Lynn, eight miles southwest of Greenup, Sunday morning at ten o'clock, when he succumbed to an attack of heart disease from which he had been a suffer for several years. Mr. Bailey served as deputy sheriff for four years under the administration of Sheriff John Collins and was later elected as sheriff for a term of four years. After retiring from office he moved to his splendid farm, which he managed up until his fatal illness. He was 67 years old and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Bailey, pioneers of Greenup county, both now deceased, the mother having died about a year ago at the age of eighty years. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Bess Pierce, of Huntington, Mrs. Lucy Stephenson of Portsmouth and Mrs. Nancy Mosely of Virginia. Funeral services will be held from the Bailey homestead Tuesday with Rev. I. D. Hays, pastor of the Christian Church, of which the decedent was a member, in charge. Burial well be made in Riverview cemetery, Greenup, at one o'clock. Bruce Bruce E. "We've had a great new project in the works for many months now--the Kentucky Vital Records Project. Eventually it will contain digital images and transcriptions of every birth, marriage and death registered in Kentucky. We are combining researcher contributions with a coordinated extraction program to help get the records up as quickly as possible. There will be a browsable index along with a search engine. The initial index contains an index of Kentucky deaths. Just putting up this browsable index will help thousands of researchers find death certificates that couldn't be found because of the errors in indexing. Barring disaster, the project will launch in February with thousands of transcribed and digitally photographed death certificates. Right now, the index is somewhere over 136,000 html pages. " Isn't this wonderful?! I will keep you posted as I hear more about it and where to find it. 1. [KyGreenup] Mr. Craycraft, 1855, Tygart and Schultz Creeks, Greenup County, Kentucky
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, A Craycraft lived on the north bank of Schultz Creek, near where Schultz Creek flows into Tygart Creek, about three miles north of Bennetts Mills, according to the 1855 map of Greenup County, Kentucky. The first name is abbreviated and is difficult to read, because the first letter is on top of the road. It might be "Wm." for William, but it looks more like "Mrd" for Millard. Was this William Craycraft? There are some misspellings on the map. Mr. Craycraft lived near a church, which stood near Tygart and Schultz Creeks, on the west side of Tygarts Creek and south of Schultz Creek. In 1855, the church was designated "D. Chapel", which might have been Disciples Chapel(?). On the 1876 map, it was called simply "church". This particular Craycraft does not appear on the 1876 map of Greenup County. Dr. Moore was the nearest landowner shown on the 1876 map, to where the 1855 Mr. Craycraft was located. Can anyone help me identify the Craycraft who lived at the intersection of Tygart and Schultz Creeks? Part of my interest in this area is the fact that at least two of the Barney brothers settled on Tygart and Schultz Creeks, according to Ms. Biggs. I am a fifth-great grandson of John Barney, the father of the Barney brothers (Thomas Marion, Benjamin Franklin and Squire). Ms. Biggs apparently meant that the Barneys settled on both Tygart and Schultz Creeks, not necessarily at the ~junction~ of the two watercourses. Or did she? The point where Schultz Creek flows into Tygart Creek is one specific place, whereas the entire length of Tygart Creek and Schultz Creek is a large area. Thank you for your help. If you have any questions regarding the 1855 and 1876 maps of Greenup County, I will do what I can to answer them. There are many landowners who did NOT appear on the maps, however. The maps were primarily geological and so the emphasis was not on the residents. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
