Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, William Cooper (my third-great grandfather) was born about 1821 or 1822 in Massachusetts or Connecticut, according to various conflicting records. He obtained a good education in Connecticut and became a teacher in Connecticut, according to the memoirs of a grandson of William Cooper. William Cooper claimed that his mother was descended from a Mayflower passenger. He could name the members of each generation back from his mother, but this information was not recorded or has not been preserved. William Cooper was described as an excellent reader and teacher, who could read a passage so well that understanding would result in the hearer, just from the manner of reading. William Cooper migrated from Connecticut to Greenup County, Kentucky by 1846. How long it took him, where he stopped along the way, what residences he had along the way, what route he took and with whom he traveled, all are unknown. He became a tobacconist after he arrived in Kentucky. William Cooper never owned land after 1848. William Cooper married Martha Ann Barney on May 6, 1846 in the Tygart Creek village of Liberty, Greenup County, Kentucky, which later was renamed Lynn. He purchased fifty acres and a Liberty town lot in 1847 (two separate pieces of property) but sold them in 1848. William and Martha had three children: Adoniram (my great great grandfather), Artemas and Valentine. Valentine died in 1852 at age three. Adoniram (1846-1875) married Martha Ann Messer on January 18, 1870 in Scioto County, Ohio although they were lifelong residents of Greenup County, and Artemas (1847-1908) married Sarah Susanna Rake/Raike in Greenup County in 1873. William Cooper moved to Lewis County about 1852, then back to Greenup County by 1860. He served in the Union Army's Twenty-second Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Company "E", a Company which was composed of mostly Lewis County men. He was wounded in the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, December 29, 1862. A mini-ball struck him in the forehead an inch above his right eye. The wound affected his mind. After the Civil War, William Cooper lived in Lewis and Greenup Counties in various people's homes. He was described as a feeble-minded man who lived day to day by the charity of the families of the neighborhood, who watched after him. He was a resident of the National Union Soldiers' Home near Dayton, Ohio for a few months. About 1885 or so, William Cooper moved to Jackson County, West Virginia and made his home with his son Artemas Cooper. William Cooper died November 23, 1903 in Jackson County and is buried in Meadowdale Cemetery, adjacent to Meadowdale Baptist Church in the small community of Duncan, in Eastern Jackson County, West Virginia. Query: Who were the parents of William Cooper? Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, Lafayette Spriggs (ca.1843-1913) was one of four soldiers who provided affidavits for my third-great grandfather William Cooper's pension application. Spriggs and Cooper served in Company "E" of the Union Army's Twenty-second Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. The affidavit was written in the 1880s in Greenup or Lewis County, Kentucky. I would like to correspond with anyone who is interested in the Spriggses, so that we can exchange information. One of the things I am going to try to find out is where in Ohio Benjamin F. Spriggs (1813-1871) was living between 1843 and 1849. Benjamin F. Spriggs was Lafayette's father. The second item of interest is Lafayette Spriggs's whereabouts around 1883. If I can locate Mr. Spriggs's residence in the 1880s, I may be able to locate the dwellingplace of William Cooper, since in the early 1880s, William Cooper was supposedly living near Lafayette Spriggs. I think that William Cooper was living in Greenup County around 1882, not far from the Lewis County line. In the 1880 Census of Greenup County, page 69B, Lafayette Spriggs had a Liberty post office address. That is not specific enough, however, to determine which hollow, which creek Mr. Spriggs lived in or on. Having a Liberty post office address did not mean that Mr. Spriggs could not have lived on Schultz Creek, Horse Hollow or Stockham/Stockholm Creek. Thank you for your help! Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, Are there any researchers who are interested in the RANKINS surname? Benjamin Rankins and his wife Lavina "sold" a town lot in the village of Greenupsburg, Greenup County, Kentucky to the heirs of Squire Barney on July 29, 1838. The selling price was one dollar. The town lot was designated Lot Number Nine. This deed is in Deed Book "G", page 16. Benjamin S. Rankin married Lavinia Fuqua on April 3, 1826 in Greenup County. How did it come about that Benjamin and Lavinia Rankin(s) conveyed Lot Number Nine to the widow Rebecca (Douglas) Barney for one dollar? Thank you for your assistance in gaining a greater understanding of the circumstances. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
Folks, this message was sent to two other lists in September from the same person yet he says he's never seen anything like this before. (you may look up the email addy on google if you'd like to check it out yourself). This list is not for getting customers for ebay trade IF that is what this is all about. Non-genealogy notes are not appreciated by our busy researchers. Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, I have received my first map from myTopo.com. I ordered a map of part of Greenup and Lewis Counties, Kentucky. The map is 18 inches by 24 inches, horizontal format, on a scale of 1:25000. One inch equals 4/10 mile. Parts of six USGS topographic maps were used by the mapmaker, myTopo.com, to create the seamless custom order. My purpose in ordering the map was to have a view of all the area from Liberty/Lynn, Greenup County to Quincy, on the Ohio River in Lewis County. I am interested in the roads that were used to haul iron from the iron furnaces of western Greenup County to the steamboat landing on the Ohio River at Quincy, Lewis County. The iron furnaces I am referring to are New Hampshire/Brushy Furnace, Enterprise Furnace, Globe Furnace and Kenton Furnace. The Ohio River was truly a "Window to the World" for the settlers of Greenup County, Kentucky. Without a link to that important waterway, businesses could not survive. Being able to reach the Ohio River meant making a connection to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and all points eastward, as well as having a link to the Mississippi River, New Orleans and out to the Atlantic Ocean. The 1876 map of Greenup County has "Road to Quincy" at the intersection of what is today known as Route 546 (Schultz Fork Road) and Route 784. Route 546 is also designated the AA Highway or Route Ten. The 1876 "Road to Quincy" appears to have been the same route that the AA Highway follows today, in going from Letitia to Quincy. Was this the ONLY "Road to Quincy" from western Greenup County in use in 1876 or were there others? There is another route to Quincy from western Greenup County. It is Route 2070 up Horse Hollow from York. Route 2070 becomes Route 1021 in Lewis County and follows Briery Branch downstream into Quincy on the Ohio River. The owners of the three afore-mentioned furnaces apparently did not keep all their activities in Greenup County. Instead, they routed their product by the shortest way, to the bank of the Ohio River, which took them into Lewis County to Quincy. Being a teamster in the 1850s and 1860s involved handling six yoked oxen over high ridges such as the one on the dividing line between Greenup and Lewis Counties, transporting heavy loads of pig iron. The dual-county nature of much of the lives of the residents of this area has an effect on genealogical research. It is likely that some residents of Greenup County used the Quincy post office, which is in Lewis County. This can cause confusion when trying to locate people. For instance, it is possible that a family could have been enumerated in one county for the Census, while the family was using a post office in a different county. My third-great grandfather William Cooper (ca.1822-1903) lived in Greenup and Lewis Counties, Kentucky, back and forth, from when he left Greenup County for Lewis County about 1852, to when he migrated to Jackson County, West Virginia about 1885. Between 1852 and 1885, I have found at least five moves from one county into the other and there might have been more. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper P.S. I am interested in when the roads to Quincy were "cut" and which routes were used by each furnace.

I found this on the AncientFaces website, located here: http://www.ancientfaces.com I know there are some people who are researching this name, so I thought I would pass this along! Kathy George Washington Fraley's Story Surname: Fraley Submitted By: Kay Cornell Date Submitted Jul 31, 2003 Branch of Service: Armies/Infantries Conflict/Period Served: 1800 to 1899 > Civil Wars Description: George Washington Fraley "Wash" born April 16, 1837, Floyd County, KY, to Daniel Fraley and Mary Hatfield Fraley. GW is listed on his father's Daniel Fraley 1850 Floyd County KY Census. George W married First Mathilda Yates, March 1,1860 in Floyd County, KY. George and Matilda's first son, William was born in Dec. 1860. G W enlisted in the 5th Kentucky infantry, Co A. "Twelve Month Men", on October 16 1861, for the Confederate States of America. George served under Col. A.J. May "Morgan County", and Capt. Thomas R. Worsham. He served under Col. May at Piketon, when the Federal's moved against Piketon. The 5th infantry used squirrel rifles, shotguns, and flintlock muskets against the Federal's. During the cold months the regiment, including GW, in southeastern Ky endured chilling rains, winds and snow. George was there in Feb. when the regiment participated in the Battle of Middle Creek, and in May, under Col. Marshall, they defeated General Cox at Princeton, VA. The twelve months men, covered a lot of ground, while marching and counter marching on the borders of Kentucky, West Virginia, from Princeton, VA to Bristol, Tennessee, guarding Mountain passes and salt works against raiders. They were called Col. Marshall's foot calvary. When it was time to re-enlist or muster out in October of 1862, Most of the twelve month men, along with G W Fraley, proposed that they would re-enlist for the war, and could furnish their own mounts, is they were permitted to go into the mounted service. General Marshall refused them, so when the regiment arrived in Salyersville, three hundred and forty three men, including George Washing Fraley were mustered out of the service. GW was mustered October 16, 1862, and took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States Government on August 12, 1864. After the service George and Matilda's Daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in Floyd county in 1862 and son James in 1864. Matilda could have died at the time of James birth, or shortly after. George married second, Charlotte Yates March 5 1869 in Wayne County W VA. Charlotte was the daughter of James Yates and Elizabeth Neal Yates. George and Charlotte "Lottie" were on the 1870 Lawrence County, Ohio Census in Perry Twp. , with Wm, Mary E., and James. They lived three houses from his brother Samuel and Polly Fraley. Their first born John was born in Lawrence County, Ohio. By 1875 GW and Lottie were back in Floyd County, KY., where my gg grandfather James Monroe Fraley was born. George and Lottie were still in Floyd County, Ky in 1880. By 1890 they were living in Johnson County, KY. George was an itinerate laborer. He worked cutting timber and making cross toes for the railroad. He was a coal miner and a pole man on the Sandy and Licking River, as well as a farmer and a preacher. George and Lottie raised eight Children of their own as well as his three children from his first marriage. In March 1898, while at the home of son, James Monroe Fraley and Laure B Salyers Fraley, Lottie passed away of the Flux, outside of Salyersville in Magoffin Co Ky. April 24,1914, in the matter of CSA Pension claim of Emily J Poe, Widow of Meredeth Poe, Co F & D, 14th Ky Inf, George Washington Fraley appeared in court in Magoffin Co Ky, being duly sworn, declared that he was well acquainted with Steve Stone, first husband of Emily J Poe, the claimant, and knows that said Steve Stone died on January 28,1898, and that said claimant married Meredeth Poe several years after her first husbands death. That he is well acquainted with the claimant. She was called Jane Risner, and her maiden name was Risner, and she was called by that name after her first husbands death, although she was the widow of the said Steve Stone at the time. She was married to the Soldier Meredeth Poe. G.W.Fraley signed his Mark, with Nannie Hackworth and Anthony Hackworth's signatures as witnesses. George filed his applicant for CSA pension August 27,1914, and the pension was granted on August 28,1914 by B.C. May, Judge of the Floyd County Court. George stated he was living in Brainard, Ky at the time. In 1918 George moved with his son James Monroe, and family to Harden Co Ohio, This is where he enjoyed fishing with his grandson Rice Fraley and telling him family stories. In 1920 George was living in the household of his daughter Bell and her husband Wiley Salyers in Harden County Ohio. My uncle Tom Fraley, youngest son of James Monroe, told me one time that George died while fishing on a river, May 22,1923 in Alger, Ohio. His funeral was held in son, James home May 23 1923. George Washington Fraley is buried in the Preston Cemetery in Marion two., Hardin Co Ohio, next to his granddaughter Sadie Fraley.
Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, According to the 1880 Census of Liberty, Greenup County, Kentucky, page 74D, Moses H. Allen was 77 years old, born in Kentucky (about 1803). The 1880 Census recorded that Moses H. Allen's father and mother were born in MASSACHUSETTS. Who were the parents of Moses H. Allen? There were two more persons in the household of Moses H. Allen, whose relationship to him was designated as "Other". Mary Allen was 59, born in Indiana, with parents born in Virginia. Amos H. Allen was 32, born in Ohio. Amos's father was born in Kentucky and his mother was born in Indiana. In the 1850 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky is an "M.H. Allin" (Moses?), age 47, born in Kentucky. In his household was Priscilla Allen, age 81, born in Maryland(?). Was Priscilla M.H. Allen's mother? Should her birthplace be Massachusetts instead of Maryland? E.S. Jackson added that M.H. Allen married Mary M. Huston on March 25, 1858. Thank you for any details regarding Moses H. Allen. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, The shoe factory at Lynn, Greenup County, Kentucky was described by David Spencer in a newspaper article that was published in the Greenup News in 1984. I copied the article while at the Greenup County Public Library. Mr. Spencer wrote a series of articles entitled, "Another Time and Place". Tygart Valley, Part Five was entitled "The Shoe Factory". Mr. Spencer wrote that at the mouth of Brushy Creek on Tygart Creek was a shoe factory in the middle 1800s. This must have been the factory of John Pratt, although Mr. Spencer did not mention John Pratt. "One might wonder, why a shoe factory there?" The shoe factory was very profitable because of the great number of furnace employees in the area. In 1866, albeit about seventeen years after the closing of the Lynn shoe factory, Buffalo Furnace employees alone (about eighty men) would spend about ten thousand dollars a year on boots, shoes and drygoods for themselves and their families. This was just one furnace community. One can imagine how many boots and shoes were needed for the entire Tygart Valley. "There were at one time three furnaces in operation, not to mention saw mills, grist mills, miners, farmers and others who needed footwear. We can also see why there were several tanning factories in operation in Greenup County. "Like many other businesses of that day, water was the source of power used to drive machinery. There was always a small dam erected across the waterway. Most of these dams were made of wood four or five feet high. A trough or raceway was built along the river bank below the dam. A gate was placed at the head of the raceway to control the water flow. A large water wheel, some ten to twelve feet across, was placed at the foot of the race. The more water that was passed down the race, the faster the wheel would turn and more power would be developed. Most of these wheels were called undershot wheels because the water passed under the wheels instead of over them. "I am not sure how modern the machinery was at the factory. But I would think that most of the leather cutting was done by hand. And no doubt the soles were nailed on by hand using a shoe last and brads. The stitching machines were very crude in those days, and during breakdowns or low water much of the stitching was done by hand using sewing awls. "There were many shoe cobblers in those days and most were kept busy at shoe factories or running their own cobbler shop." To my understanding, the shoe factory at Liberty/Lynn began operations about 1844 or so, but was closed not long after, in 1849 or at least by 1850, due to the untimely death of John Pratt in 1849. During the time it was open, the shoe factory made the village of Liberty (Lynn) a bustling place. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
