Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, There were nine men in the 1870 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky who were listed as iron furnace managers. The way their occupation was listed varied: Furn. manager, Furnace Mgr, Iron Furn. Mgr., Mgr. at furnace, Mgr. iron furnace, Mgr. iron furn and Manager Furn. The managers were found in the online 1870 Census of Greenup County, by using the "Find in this Page" feature. Special thanks goes to researcher Bruce Logan, who posted the 1870 Census online. The following words and abbreviations were entered and found: manager, iron, furnace, furn, mgr. Using the "Find" feature, the nine managers of iron furnaces were: 1. Marimus/Marinus King, Precinct One (Greenupsburg Post Office), dwelling 35 of 457 2. John Collins, Precinct Three (Lynn Post Office), dwelling 115 of 277 The next four managers were enumerated in Precinct Four (Oldtown Post Office), which included 356 dwellings: 3. William N. Coffee, dwelling 24 4. William R. Earhart, dwelling 36 5. Washington Partlow, dwelling 43 6. Thomas G. Scott, dwelling 146 Precinct Five (Hunnewell Post Office): 7. James Hoop, dwelling 409 of 428 There were two furnace managers who were living in Greenup County, but whose furnaces were located in an adjacent county: 8. Sebastian Eifort, Precinct Five (Hunnewell Post Office), dwelling 165 of 428, manager of Boone Furnace (in Carter County) 9. John Russell, Precinct Six (Bellefonte Post Office), dwelling 111 of 144, possibly manager of Bellefonte Furnace (Boyd County) Eliminating the last two managers, because their furnaces were located outside of Greenup County, we have seven furnace managers, corresponding to the seven iron furnaces which were in operation in Greenup County in 1870, presuming one manager to a furnace. While I do not have each manager linked to his respective furnace, it can be theorized by process of elimination that John Collins was the manager of Kenton Furnace in 1870. There were no iron furnace managers in the village of Greenupsburg (89 dwellings) or in Precinct Two (Springville Post Office), 416 dwellings, in 1870. John Collins was the only furnace manager who lived in the western part of Greenup County, near Kenton Furnace, in the time period under consideration. John Collins lived 22 dwellings from William Zornes in 1870. William Zornes lived not far from Kenton Furnace, as shown on the 1876 map of Greenup County. There was no other iron furnace operating near Kenton Furnace in 1870. Kenton Furnace was the northernmost iron furnace in Greenup County in 1870, with the possible exception of the furnace managed by Marinus King. The other iron furnaces were in the central to southern and eastern areas of Greenup County. In earlier years, this was not the case. But the focus is on 1870. Therefore, if John Collins was the manager of Kenton Furnace, then the close neighbors of John Collins who worked in furnace-related occupations such as iron ore miner, furnace keeper, furnace filler, etc., were employed by Kenton Furnace. Benjamin F. Spriggs, iron ore miner, lived fifteen dwellings from John Collins in 1870. Benjamin Spriggs was most likely associated with Kenton Furnace in that year. Benjamin's son Lafayette Spriggs, farm laborer, was living next door to Benjamin. The iron furnaces can be useful aids in locating people, because an iron furnace was a specific point on the map. Anyone employed by an iron furnace usually lived near the place of employment, to be able to walk to work. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper P.S. By 1880, John Collins (listed as John H. Collins) had moved to Cherokee County, Alabama, where he was an assistant superintendant of an iron furnace. P.P.S. The seven iron furnaces in operation in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1870 were (in the order they were built): Caroline, Raccoon, Hunnewell, Laurel, Pennsylvania, Buffalo and Kenton.

Hello, This is my first post to the Greenup County Mailing List. I'm posting for my friend, Roseann. She's just starting the search for her family and I'm helping her get started. Her paternal grandfather was Nick Blevins born sometime between 1880-1900 in Old Town, Kentucky. Wife is unknown. They had 4 children: Irene, Jimmy, "Bug", and Charles Edward "Hunk" Blevins born in the 1920's. Last night I did search the Greenup County web page and found info about the Blevins Cemetery. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/greenup/cemeteries/blevins.txt This cemetery is most likely her kin. Roseann was a young girl when her father, Charles Edward "Hunk" Blevins died. Since he's buried in this cemetery and there is a George Nicholas Blevins buried there, I would say this is Nick Blevins, her grandfather. If you have any connections to this family or know of someone who does, please contact me: Helen Currie Davis at [email protected] Roseann is excited about getting started finding her family. I'll put you in contact with her. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, There were seven iron furnaces in operation in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1870, as well as I can determine. Therefore, in the 1870 Census, any men identified as furnace hands in Greenup County were associated with one of these seven iron furnaces: Caroline, Raccoon, Hunnewell, Laurel, Pennsylvania, Buffalo or Kenton. In the 1870 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, John Collins was enumerated as an Iron Furnace Manager. He was 32 years old, born in Pennsylvania. His wife Elizabeth was 28, also born in Pennsylvania. Query: Which iron furnace was John Collins managing in 1870? Lafayette Spriggs and Benjamin F. Spriggs were living sixteen and fifteen households from John Collins in 1870. Benjamin F. Spriggs was an iron ore miner in 1870. James Ruggles, age 77, was twelve houses from John Collins. It appears that Benjamin F. Spriggs was associated with the iron furnace that John Collins was managing, at least in 1870. Thank you for your help! Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

There are some applications on file for those seeking pensions from the government for service rendered during the War of 1812. I know, because I have read the records of William McGinnis of Greenup Co., who served in the War of 1812 during the Battle of Put in Bay. Hugs, Cheryl
Charles, This is copied from the National Archives and Records Administration website: To order military service records from Washington, D.C., use NATF Form 86 Copies of military pension claim files can now be ordered online for military service from the American Revolution up to before World War I, as well as through NATF Form 85. The website is: http://www.archives.gov/research_room I got pension records from a civil war veteran which had a lot of information. I think when they are available they generally have more information than just the service records alone. But I don't know if pension records are available for war of 1812. When you look over the website, they will probabably make it clear what is avialable. Good luck, Jean
Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, "Jno. Sprig" is shown on the 1855 map of Greenup County, Kentucky, on an unnamed creek which when compared to modern maps is shown to be Stockholm or Stockham Creek. On the 1876 map, is a "J. Spig" in the same area as the 1855 "Jno. Sprig". There are no occurrences of the Spriggs surname on the 1876 map, but it must be borne in mind that many residents are not on the map. The location is on Stockholm/Stockham Creek, about 1 1/2 miles north of Kenton Furnace. The "J. Spig" of 1876 is likely the same name as the "Jno. Spig" of 1855. I am seeking to identify this person. In the 1850 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, there is no Jonathan Spriggs or John Spriggs of the right age range to be a landowner in 1855. There is a John Spriggs in the home of Benjamin F. Spriggs in 1850, but he was only three months old in 1850. In the 1880 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, there is a John Spriggs, but he was 25 years old in 1880, too young to be a landowner in 1855. Who was the Jno. (Jonathan or John) Spriggs who appears on the 1855 map of Greenup County, Kentucky? I am investigating whether Stockholm/Stockham Creek was the watercourse that Benjamin F. Spriggs (father of Lafayette Spriggs) lived on. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
Does anyone know how to obtain the war records and pension records for an ancestor that fought in the War of 1812? I found out that 3rd great grandfather Aaron Fairchild fought in the War of 1812
