    1. [KyGreenup] Jonathan Howard Pratt/Howard Jonathan Pratt: Son of John Pratt (1800-1849)?
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, In ~History of Greenup County, Kentucky~, Nina Mitchell Biggs wrote that John Pratt and Eliza Bellow had a son whose name she did not know. The "mystery son" would have been born about 1823 and was the firstborn child of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow, who were married in Greenup County, Kentucky on February 20, 1822. Some researchers have surmised that George W. Pratt was the firstborn son of John Pratt. Indeed, several facts seem to point to this person as the son whom Ms. Biggs did not know. I have found another candidate for the firstborn son of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow. He is Jonathan H. Pratt, whose name was apparently either Howard Jonathan Pratt or Jonathan Howard Pratt. In the 1870 Census, he was listed as Howard J. Pratt, in Miami County, Kansas. In the 1880 Census of Wea Township, Miami County, Kansas, Jonathan H. Pratt was enumerated on page 519B. He was recorded as 57 years old, born in Kentucky. According to the 1880 Census, his father was born in Vermont and his mother was born in Kentucky. This fits the requirements for the son of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow. In 1880, George W. Pratt's father AND mother were said to be born in Vermont. Granted, the Vermont birth of his mother might be an error. There is more information which strengthens the theory that Jonathan Howard Pratt/Howard Jonathan Pratt is a match, in the 1850 Census of Cheshire Township, Gallia County, Ohio, page 459 (stamped number) or page 918 (following the hand-written numbers), dwellinghouse 1032. In Gallia County, Ohio in 1850, Jonathan H. Pratt was 27, born in Kentucky. His wife was Sarah, 25, born in Kentucky. Enumerated immediately before Jonathan H. Pratt was William Ravenscraft, 36, farmer, born in Pennsylvania. William's wife was America, who was 22 years old, born in Kentucky. This was America Pratt, daughter of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow, who married William Ravenscraft on March 20, 1843. In 1850, the children of Jonathan and Sarah were: Virgil, 5, KY; Gertrude, 3, KY; and Cassius, 1, Ohio. The 1870 Census of Wea Township, Miami County, Kansas shows the birthplace of farmer Howard J. Pratt's children and gives clues as to his migrations. His wife's name was Sarah. She was 45 in 1870, born in Kentucky. Howard J. Pratt's property was valued at $23,950/$13,000. Their children, as shown in 1870, were: Cassius, 20, KY; Kossuth, 19, Ohio; Horace, 16, KY; Harry C., 14, KY; Howard, 12, KY; Charles H., 9, KY; Anna, 8, KANSAS; Blanche, 6, KS; Cornelia, 5, KS; Terrie, 2, KS. The next dwelling was Howard Jonathan Pratt's son Virgil Pratt, age 23, born in Kentucky. Virgil's wife was Emily, 21, VA. Thus we see that Jonathan Howard Pratt was apparently living in Kentucky about 1849 or into 1850, but he appeared in the 1850 Census of Gallia County, Ohio. From about 1854 to about 1861, he was in Kentucky. About 1861 or 1862, he migrated to Kansas. Perhaps his exodus from Kentucky was motivated by the Civil War. He appears to have been in Kansas from about 1862 at least through 1880. It is important to identify the firstborn child of John Pratt and Eliza Bellow, in order to find their whereabouts and their migrations. Perhaps John Pratt lived for a time in Gallia County, Ohio. Query: Was John Pratt's brother Lott H. Pratt's middle name "Howard"? Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

    1. [KyGreenup] Greenupsburg Town Lot Number Nine: RANKINS-BARNEY-PRATT-FRIZELL
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Greenup County, Kentucky Researchers, Greenupsburg Town Lot Number Nine was sold by Benjamin and Levina RANKINS for one dollar to the heirs of Squire BARNEY, deceased, on July 29, 1838. This is recorded in Deed Book "G", page 16. Greenup County Court recorded this same date, July 29, 1838, and mentioned the heirs of Squire BARNEY, deceased, as being Elizabeth Ann, Martha Ann (my third-great grandmother), Sarah Ann, Benjamin Franklin and Amy BARNEY NICHOLS. Notice that the widow, Rebecca DOUGLAS BARNEY, was not included in this list. But on March 21, 1839, eight months later, John PRATT sold Greenupsburg Town Lot Number Nine to Alfred H. FRIZZELL for the sum of one dollar! This transaction is in Deed Book "G", page 83. What was happening here? How did John PRATT come into possession of Town Lot Number Nine? Why did he sell the town lot to A.H. FRIZELL for one dollar? What became of the BARNEYs in 1838 and 1839? Clearly, there are a few pieces of the puzzle that are missing. Nina M. Biggs wrote in ~History of Greenup County, Kentucky~, page 59, from notes taken by John Myers, that a family named BARNEY lived in a house that was located on Water Street in Greenupsburg, next to Guy WILSON's house, in Lot Number Nine (figured by counting the lots in the description). The BARNEY house was two houses away from the Little Sandy Ferry House. What years were being described by John Myers in his portrayal of the village of Greenupsburg? Thank you for your help in this confusing scenario. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

    1. [KyGreenup] John Balloo in 1850 Greenup County, Compared to Others
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Members of the Greenup County, Kentucky Discussion Group, John Balloo (Bellow) was enumerated in the household of Garrett Balloo in the 1850 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky. In the 1850 Census, John Balloo was recorded as a native of North Carolina, 62 years old, therefore born about 1788 and about 32 years old in 1820. The head of the household was Garrett Balloo, age 32, farmer, born in Kentucky. Mary Balloo was thirty, born in Virginia. Enumerated immediately before Garrett Balloo was the household of Linsy Balloo. Linsy Balloo was 26 years old and a farmer. Everyone in his household was born in Kentucky. Abeneda (female) was 22. John W. was three years old and Alice was seven months old. There is a death record in Greenup County for a John Bellow who died October 24, 1857 in Little Sandy, Greenup County, Kentucky. According to this death record, John Bellow was born in Tennessee. Query: Were the John Bellow who died in 1857, the John Balloo who lived with Garrett Balloo in 1850, the John Belew who was in Greenup County in 1820 and the John Bellow who was the brother-in-law of John Pratt, all one and the same person? 3. Randall, John Bellew.....My great, great grandmother was Isabinda Bellew who married William Bradford. Her brother was John Garrett Bellew. Supposedly their parents were John Bellew (b. 1789 in North Carolina and d. 10-24-1857 in Little Sandy, Greenup County. Kentucky) and Margaret Garrett (b. abt. 1789 In South Carolina and d. bet. 1840 and 1850 in Greenup County). I have looked for confirmation of these facts (and of William Bradford) for some time. My records show John Garrett married Mary Jane ? and both died in Carter County after 1870. Oh, at one time I sent you some copies of papers from my grandmother's bible. Did you get them? Pat Myers

    1. [KyGreenup] John and Lot Pratt, John Bellow, Variant Spellings of Bellow
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, John Belew (Bellow) was enumerated in the 1820 Census of Greenup County, Kentucky, page 179. There were seven persons in the household: three males and four females. One male was ten years of age or younger. One male was between ten and sixteen years old. The head of the household, John Belew/Bellow, was between 26 and 45. There were four females age ten or younger. There was one female between 26 and 45. Presumably, this was that same John Bellow who had a sister named Eliza Bellow who married John Pratt on February 20, 1822 in Greenup County, Kentucky, with John Bellow standing as security for the bride. At the time of the marriage, John and Eliza Bellow's father (name unknown to me) was a resident of Alabama and a widower. Eliza Bellow was born in 1804. Therefore, in the 1820 Census, she would have been in the age category of either ten to sixteen or sixteen to twenty-six. Neither age category was represented in the John Belew household of 1820. The Bellow surname is like quicksilver, flowing into a dizzying array of variant spellings. Here are 22 variant spellings, in alphabetical order: Balew, Ballew, Balloo, Baloo, Balooe, Balow, Beleu, Belew, Belleau, Bellieau, Below, Belue, Bilieu, Billow, Billue, Bilyeu, Birlew, Blow, Blue, Boileu, Bolew and Boliew. Listed immediately before John Belew in 1820 was Lot Pratt. Lot(t) Pratt was a brother of John Pratt. John Pratt was twenty years old in 1820. There was no male of the appropriate age bracket to have been John Pratt in the household of Lot(t) Pratt in 1820. Query: Where was John Pratt in 1820, two years before his marriage to Eliza Bellow? Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
