    1. [KyGreenup] re: ancestry.com 1900 census
    2. Hi Sandy - the 1900 census is searchable by name at www.genealogy.com. There is a membership required. If you don't want to buy into it, I'd suggest doing a name search in it and if your people are f\ound, note the district number, and page, etc, then go back to Ancestry and find the page you need to see. Good luck! X-Message: #7 Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 20:36:55 -0500 From: "bugnut" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Subject: [KyGreenup] ancestry.com 1900 census Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" MIME-Version: 1.0 Is there a quicker way to search the 1900 census on ancestry.com? I'm doing the free 14-day trial, and want to look up Robert Lee Gilmore in Russell, KY in 1900...but I would have to manually search 58 pages just for the township that Russell is in....not to mention all of the other townships for Greenup Co. It would takes days/weeks to search the entire county! Plus, I can't see the entire page at once. I have to click on the bottom of the census screen...and it slowly moves down a few lines, then click on the screen again to get it to move down a few more lines...over & over. It takes FOREVER to view one page....and who knows if the township I'm looking at is the one where Robert Gilmore lived in 1900! <aaarrrrggggghhhhh!!!!> I've found that Heritage Quest doesn't have all of the records that ancestry has. For example, I could not find Robert Gilmore, age 9, in 1870 census on Heritage Quest, but found him on ancestry.com in the 1870 census. Are there better sites which have all of the census records...AND are quick at searching? Thanks! Sandy

    1. [KyGreenup] Griffith Marriages
    2. Tom Griesan
    3. Hello! I got a lead on some of the Griffith line that I have been working on. Everything that I've checked out so far seems to point to the fact that these marriages are indeed true, and that these are my Griffiths, but I would love to be able to find some evidence of a marriage for these people. Can anyone find record of these? I'm guessing that they were married in Greenup County or Boyd County, Kentucky. Thanks! Charity Ruth Griffith to John Henthorne, married about 1868 Emma Griffith to Louis F. Fearing, married about 1874 Naomi Griffith to William E. Fearing, married about 1874 - Jean Griesan

You can find the entire bill at: http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/record/04rs/HB100/SCS1.doc Death certificates will still be public record after 50 years but more recent death certificates will only be available to: 1. the decedent's widow or widower, 2. child eighteen (18) years of age or older 3. parent 4. grandparent 5. sibling eighteen (18) years of age or older 6. funeral director handling the decedent's funeral arrangements 7. personal representative of the decedent's estate 8. a named beneficiary of an insurance policy of the decedent 9. a person with a claim against the decedent's estate This means that genealogists can no longer order great-uncle Jasper's death certificate to see his parents' names. Birth records will be have limited access while the person is living but will still be public record after 100 years. Divorce and marriage records will be closed for 70 years. 1. [KyGreenup] Great Depression discussion in Kentucky correction
    2. Oops! I had the wrong price. Please note the correct information below. Sharon Kentucky residents may be interested in attending a series of discussions about Kentucky life in the Great Depression sponsored by the Kentucky Historical Society. The Great Depression started earlier and lasted longer in Kentucky than it did in more urban states. Spend four evenings with noted historians Tracy Campbell and David Hamilton in a series of lively discussions about Kentucky life throughout the 1930s. The four topics to be discussed are: * "Kentucky during the Great Depression." Tracy Campbell begins the series with a detailed look at the impact of the Great Depression on the commonwealth. Thursday, April 8 * "Rural Life and the New Deal." David Hamilton shares how the New Deal affected the lives of rural Kentuckians. Thursday, May 13 * "Franklin Roosevelt in Kentucky." Tracy Campbell returns to discuss the public response to President Roosevelt's visit to Kentucky and his New Deal policy. Thursday, June 10 * "Depression Diversions: 1930s Popular Culture." David Hamilton concludes by exploring books, movies, music, and other aspects of cultural life in the thirties. Thursday, July 8 Background reading materials will be provided and a Depression-era dessert will be served at each session. All sessions begin at 7 p.m. at the Kentucky History Center. The fee is $45 for members of the Kentucky Historical Society or $50 non-KHS members. Preregistration and prepayment are required because attendance is limited. You may register and pay with a credit card by calling Joanie DiMartino at (502) 564-1792 ext. 4467. 3. Sandy, I wish I could say that I can help with your Gilmores, but I can't. I did go through the Lawrence County, Ohio website loooking for an obituary or a record of death. There was no evidence of one. The Lawrence County library does have newspapers on microfilm pretty consistently from 1852, so it's possible that there was an article in the paper (local news). 1. [KyGreenup] Greenup(sburg) Post Office in 1880 and Thereabouts
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Subscribers to the Greenup County, Kentucky Mailing List, This message has two parts. First, I must correct an error in the message I posted yesterday. Pierson/Pearson McCoy was a son of Alfred "Alf" McCoy, not of James McCoy. It is correct, however, that Pierson McCoy took the mail across the Ohio River from Haverhill, Ohio to the village of Greenup, Greenup County, Kentucky. James McCoy was the postmaster of Haverhill in 1880. Alf McCoy was an older brother of James McCoy. Second, I found the names of the five post offices that were in operation in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1874. I do not know about the years before and after 1874. The five were: Duval's Landing, Greenup (the village, formerly Greenupsburg), Kenton Furnace, Lynn (formerly Liberty) and Russell. The source for this information is Collins's ~History of Kentucky~. There is a passage in Biggs's ~History of Greenup County, Kentucky~ entitled "Postmasters of Greenup", page 53. According to this passage, John Moran was appointed Postmaster of Greenup on July 8, 1872. I am assuming this refers to the village of Greenup, formerly known as Greenupsburg. The next appointment listed is William M. Stevens, appointed on December 26, 1882. John Moran was still serving as the postmaster of Greenup Village in 1880. I know this because John Moran is enumerated in the 1880 Census of Greenup County, dwelling 46, page 3B, as Postmaster/Merchant and a resident of the town of Greenup. It is not stated whether the post office in the village of Greenupsburg/Greenup was in continuous operation from 1872 through 1882, but that was probably the case. Assuming there was a post office in Greenup Village at the time Pierson McCoy was taking mail across the Ohio River from Haverhill, Scioto County, Ohio to Greenup, it might have been due to the mail packet (steamboat) dropping off Greenup mail at the Haverhill Landing instead of on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. There was an older Pierson McCoy living in the town of Greenup in 1880, in dwelling 50, four households from John Moran. This Pierson McCoy, 63 years old in 1880, was a retail grocer. His wife was Mary Ann Van Bibber. Across the Ohio River, directly across from the mouth of the Little Sandy River and Greenup Village, was the village of Haverhill, Scioto County, Ohio. Brothers James McCoy and Alf McCoy each had a store there. The McCoy stores were situated across the street from each other in Haverhill. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper P.S. Based on the above information, it seems more likely that my third-great grandfather William Cooper was a resident of Scioto County, Ohio rather than Greenup County, Kentucky in 1880. He could have been "hanging his hat" anywhere, though. In the 1880s, there were at least two boarding houses in the village of Haverhill. One was owned by Charles Ault.
