This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Morton Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1AB.2ACI/3757 Message Board Post: I’ve been researching the Greenup County Morton’s for several years and recently came across an obituary which allowed me to determine how the three early Mortons (Josiah, John and Jonathan) living in the county 1800-1820 were related. I hope others may find it of use. This obituary for John Morton appeared in the May 17, 1879 edition of the Portsmouth Times: “Death of a Kentucky Pioneer John Morton, Sr., died at his residence in Springville, Ky., May 12th, 45 minutes past eleven o’clock P. M. Deceased was born at Boone Station in the year 1788. About the year 1803, his father, Jonathan Morton, removed from Clark County to Greenup County and settled his family on a tract of land six miles below the county seat, where he remained until his death which occurred in the year 1816. John Morton, the subject of this notice, enlisted in the war of 1812 and was among the disgusted troops who were compelled to lay down their arms when Hull so disgracefully surrendered to the British. For some years he followed the river as a keel boatsman, piloting such boats which were pushed by the means of poles as well as propelled by oars from New Orleans to Pittsburg. He was married in 1817 to Miss Mary Day, whose family then resided in the French Grant, went to housekeeping in Kentucky. Lived in Greenup, where for several years he was proprietor of the Timberlake House. Afterward, he removed to his farm six miles below Greenup. In 1840, finding it impossible to recover from embaressments occasioned by being obliged to pay the debts of a man named Weaver, for whom he had become security, he sold his farm and moved to Portsmouth, where he lived a few years, and then went to Springville, where he remained until his death. Before old age had unsettled his faculties, he was a genial, hospitable man, generous to a fault, scrupulously honest and upright in all his dealings. In politics he was an old line whig until the breaking out of the rebellion and the destruction of the party when he became a Democrat to which party he was an adherent until the time of his death. He leaves a wife now in her eightieth year, and four children, Mr. Willis Q.! Morton, Mrs. Amanda White, Mrs. R. Boughner and John D. Morton, all now residing in Springville. The funeral discourse was preached by Dr. E. P. Pratt and the remains brought to Green Lawn Cemetery for internment.” The Jonathan Morton mentioned in the second sentence of the obituary married Letitia McCargo in Prince Edward County, Virginia in 1784 and moved to Clark County some time before John’s birth in 1788. Jonathan was the son of Richard Morton and Judith Quinn. Richard had a brother, Captain John Morton who was the father of Josiah Morton who moved to Greenup County with his father-in-law Moses Fuqua around 1799. Bob Dunlap

Have been trying in vain for many years to find my Gordons- a Robert Gordon married Sarah Munn or Hook in Virginia approx. 1820. They settled in Greenup Co. by 1840, with sons Robert, William and George Washington. Robert Sr. died before 1850, and Sarah remarried Solomon Casteel, and had Lily and Henry. Would like to know anything at all about Robert Sr. and his ancestors. Thank you.

I've been trying to sort out the two Simon Felty families living in Greenup Co. KY. Does anyone know if/ how these two families are related? I found Simon with wife, Elizabeth Music, in the 1860 (E. Little Sandy), 1880 (Hunnewell), and 1900 (Hunnewell) Greenup Co. KY Census, but cannot locate the family in 1870? I found Simon with wife, Malinda Music, listed twice in 1870, (once in Oldtown and once in Lynn), but cannot locate them in 1860? In 1880 this Simon is with second wife, Nancy (Thompson) living in Oldtown. He and Malinda are listed among those buried in the Corn Adkins Cemetery in Little Leatherwood. Both of these Simon Felty households have a son, Jefferson D. Felty. The Jefferson D. Felty who married Matilda Lowder lists his date of birth in the 1900 Census as September 1862 and age as 37. The Jefferson D. Felty with wife Ida lists his date of birth in the 1900 Census as January 1863 and age as 37. Does anyone have a record which indicates which Jefferson was the son of Elizabeth and which Jefferson was the son of Malinda? (Jefferson and Matilda are also listed among those buried in the Corn Adkins Cemetery in Little Leatherwood). In 1900, the Jefferson D. Felty with wife Matilda, has living in his household a sister, Catherine Felty, age 13, born February 1887. IF this Jefferson is the son of Malinda, then Catherine would be a daughter of Nancy Thompson. If this Jefferson is the son of Elizabeth, then I don't know who Catherine is!!! Can anyone help?? Cindy: Thank you very much for the information on Ben Felty and the Felty children's association with the Thompsons. I am not sure how many children Simon Peter Felty had with Nancy F. Thompson but their son Benjamin Harrison Felty was my paternal Grandfather. He married my grandmother Etta Belle Hughey (there is a great deal of data on the Eastern KY Hughey family on www.gencircles.com or .net) in 1914 in Mancelona, Antrim Co., MI. I know his 1/2 brother Joseph Felty worked for the Antrim Iron Works there and died there in cir. 1950. It has been very hard to gather data on grandpa ben as the family has not been willing to talk about him. It is like he just came out of the fog one day. Thanks again, Garry R. Felty

William Thompson was born August 20, 1781 in Pennsylvania, and died May 08, what year? Annotated 1850 Greenup Co. KY Census found at Portsmouth Public Library, Scioto Co. Ohio states William b. 20 August 1781 d. 08 May 1863 A compilation of cemetery records lists: Cemetery #305, plot 640 William Thompson b. August 20, 1781 d. May 08, 1863 husband of Elizabeth O. Thompson Cemetery #305, plot 641 Elizabeth Gibbs Thompson As a point of reference, Mary (Anderson) Thompson's date of death was listed in both the 1850 annotated census and the compiled cemetery records as March 2, 1915. The correct date, supported by the actual death certificate, and family letters written at the time of her death, was March 2, 1913. "History of Kentucky" by William Elsey Connelley and E. M. Coulter, P.H.D. page 207: "Mill's Station, supposed to be in Greenup or Lewis County; Wm. Thompson, of White Oak, Greenup County, who died May 7, 1868, aged 77, settled there in 1790, with his father." Does anyone have access to mortality records for 1863 or 1868 (if such a thing exists) or newspapers for those years, which might tell us which year is the correct one? Thanks! Cindy Lowe [email protected]
I have not been able to locate Benjamin Felty in the 1900 Census. In 1910 "Ben" Felty (age 19) is living with Charles Felty (age 25), and Charles' wife, Belle, in Greenup Co. and is listed as Charles' brother. Charles is a heel maker in a shoe factory and Ben is a laborer at odd jobs. This is probably the Charles Felty who was living with his grandfather, James G.
