His wife, Mrs. LaRue Marie Hays, 50, was arrested and charged with the murder. She was arraigned Friday morning and was being held without bond Tuesday afternoon, according to Police Chief W. J. Padgett, of the homicide division of the Cobb County police department. Padgett said evidence indicated Hays and his wife were the only ones present when the shooting took place, at about 1 a.m. Friday. Two spent shells were found, but Hays was wounded by only one bullet, which was fired from the front, hitting him in the chest. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Cobb County General Hospital. He had lived in Mableton since 1971. Hays, born in Jefferson County, was a 1963 graduate of Greensburg High School. He served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Summersville Baptist Church. Hays is survived by his wife. Mrs. LaRue Hays, Mableton, Georgia! ; his parents: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hays, New Albany, Indiana; one daughter: Miss Susan Hays, Louisville; one son: Richard Hays, Louisville; two stepsons: David and Dwayne Cocanougher, Mableton, Georgia; two brothers: Eddie Hays, Summersville and Dennis Hays, Augusta, Georgia; one sister: Mrs. Peggy Herd, Clarksville, Indiana. The remains were at the Foster-Jones Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. March 3, 1975 with burial in the Campbellsville Memorial Gardens. Rev. Thurman Eaton officiated. Pallbearers were Don Shearer, William Bline, Roger Stearman, David Carlton, Bobby Larimore and J. E. Troutman. Obituaries of Green Co.
