He had been in ill health five years. He served as clerk and as deacon of the New Salem Baptist Church for a number of years, and was a member of the Finance Committee and Building Committee for construction of the new church. The son of the late James Thomas Mays and Mrs. Ella Montgomery Mays, he was born in Green County November 24, 1884. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Alice Russell on December 22, 1907. To this union three sons were born. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Cecil Mays of California, Fred and Ray Mays, Donansburg; three brothers, W. T. Mays, Donansburg, Walter and Amos Mays, Louisville, and five grand children. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, at the New Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Manley Towles and Rev. V.A. Jones in charge of the services. Burial was in the Macedonia Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clayton Banta, Homer Jon! es, Arleene Jones, Sidney Wright, Clarence Bonta and Arlene O'Banion.
