Author: Karen_Jorgensen Surnames: Crawford, Hough Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.green/17577/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Jesse Padon Crawford, 81, retired attorney who specialized in customs law, died last Sat [1953]at his home 4709 Morgan Dr., Chevy Chase, Md., after a long illness. He was a brother of Dr. W. H. Crawford, Greensburg. Mr. Crawford was born in Livingston County, Ky., and taught school in various parts of the State before he came to Washington in 1893 as an employee of the Bureau of Education. He was a law clerk in the Government tor Several years and earned his law degree from George Washington University in 1895. The following year he received his master of law degree. Retired from Government 1924 Mr. Crawford became a customs lawyer, serving in Bureau of Customs from 1913 to 1922. For the next two years he was legal adviser to the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of customs. At one time he represented the Treasury as custom's expert in a conference with Canada for suppressing smuggling operations on the Canadian border. After retiring from the Government in 1924, he went into private law practice, retiring about 1939. Mr. Crawford was active in Methodist affairs. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Bertie Hough Crawford, a daughter, Miss Jane Elizabeth Crawford, a teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School, and a brother, Dr. W. H. Crawford, of Greensburg. Funeral services were held Tuesday and burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery. Obituaries of Green Co. Ky.
